Confirmation Day is a red letter day in the life of
any church family. Here in Dromore, nine young
people and two adults are preparing to be
confirmed by Bishop Harold at a special service of
confirmation on Sunday 24th April at 10.30 am.
During that service, they will one by one say yes to
Jesus’ call to follow him on their journey through
life.
The group began preparing for that day on the 14th
of February and have met faithfully each Sunday
evening to learn about and to talk about the
Christian faith. Some of the group enjoyed a
Confirmation Weekend away at Castlewellan Castle
and Forest Park (Read feedback on pages 4 and 5).
I want to thank parents for their encouragement
during this time of ongoing preparation and
Margaret Bailie our DC Rock Leader for her much
valued help and support throughout.
Please remember each candidate in your prayers,
praying that God will continue to guide and bless
them in their journey with him, and especially on
their Confirmation Day. Their names are:-
Sophie Howard, Nadia Howard, Charlie Porter,
Courtney Haslem, Nicole Haslem, Karl Teggart,
Ross Stewart, Megane Jess, Leah Jess and adults
Keli Haslem and Colin Barr.

The Annual Easter General Vestry Meeting will be held on Thursday, 14th April 2016 at 7.30 p.m. in the Cathedral Hall.
Any parishioner is welcome to attend but only those registered General Vestry members will be eligible to vote or stand for election.
The Easter Vestry Meeting includes a report on the finances of 2015 and the elections for People’s Churchwarden, People’s Glebe-warden and Select Vestry members. The Revd Bryan Follis (Area Dean) will also appoint the Rector's Churchwarden and Rector’s Glebewarden.
The Select Vestry is responsible for the material aspects of the parish’s ministry (commonly known as Fabric, Finance and Furnish-ing). The pastoral and spiritual aspects remain the responsibility of the Clergy.
Following the Annual General Vestry, there will be a short meeting of the newly-elected Select Vestry. Refreshments will be served between these two meetings.
Takes place on Friday 8th April
at 7.30 p.m. in Cathedral Hall.
Captain Leanne Teggart and her
officer team have been preparing the
current members of the Brigade to
show a variety of the activities in
which they participate each week in
our Cathedral Hall. This event gives
the rest of us a taster as to why this
organisation is going from strength
to strength. If you would like to come
be there early!
The Mothers' Union have arranged for
a Ladies' Breakfast to take place
in Café Thyme, Dromore on Saturday
morning, 23rd April at 10.00 a.m.
As well as a healthy but substantial
breakfast being served there will be
time for devotions and reflection.
Please do plan to attend and let either
myself, Helen Forsythe (028 9269
2110) or Jill at the office know before
16th April as we will need to confirm
numbers. There will be a charge of £5.
All ladies of the parish and their
friends will be made most welcome.

Theme: For we are God's Masterpiece
Friday teatime the Dromore group set off
for Castlewellan Castle in the beautiful
setting of Castlewellan forest park.
Everyone was very excited some had
packed as if they were going for a month.
There were lots of activities and of special
interest were those run by the LOGIC
leader Matt and his assistants from St
John's Parish, Moira. They organised
canoeing activities, It's a knock out and
two other activities. They all were great
with the young people and were especially
reassuring to those with fear of being in a
canoe. They were careful about safety
clothing ensuring it was all correct. They
made the activities safe and very
enjoyable. They introduced games while in
the canoes. A really big thank you to all of
them for all their care. They have put in a
lot hard work in training and passing
canoeing and life saving courses etc all of
which has certainly paid off as they are
now providing proficient fun activities and
showing the love of Jesus as they do this.
Below are a few thoughts from three of
the young people who attended -
I liked the following
1. Activities especially laser tag
2. The new friends I made
3. The Saturday Night Live
4. The lasagne was really good
5. The Leaders were nice
6. The rave in the cave
7. Movies were good
8. The accommodation was lovely
9. I liked the worship leaders,
Billy and Laura
10. I was encouraged by the testimony of
a youth leader who became a Christian as
a result of people showing him the love of
God through their actions and the words
they spoke. His life was changed and now
he is working with young people telling
them all about the love of Jesus.

I really enjoyed Castlewellan weekend
away. My favourite thing was when we did
canoeing. I had fun meeting new people
and doing the different activities. I learnt
that Jesus listens to me 24/7.
by Jodie Young
When we arrived at the confirmation
camp all the staff were very welcoming
and inviting. We were given snacks to eat
and drink in our rooms. The food for
breakfast, lunch and dinner was served in
the dinning rooms, it was delicious and it
filled you up. The talks were very
interesting they told us why and how to
read the bible and what God is telling us
through reading it. Small groups were held
after the talk so we could summarise what
we learnt earlier that day. We used acting
and drawing to demonstrate scenes from
the Bible. When we did activities such as
laser tag, bubble ball, canoeing and the
maze we met new people and had lots of
fun. Finally when we went to the disco on
the last night we were able to meet our
friends and dance to the latest music.
by Nicole Haslem
Over the weekend the young people
were presented with information to help
them build a relationship with God. For
example in the natural world it's true that
the more time we spend with someone
the more we become like them. When
we get to know someone we can share
things and be open about what's going on.
We can say how we feel, if we are
April 2016................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. 5
annoyed we can be honest and say we feel
annoyed or let down. Jesus wants to be
our friend forever he wants us to have
that close relationship with him.
All of the worship, talks and activities had
a collective purpose of developing
understanding of faith, encourage young
people in their role as part of the church.
Through fellowship, discussion, worship
and fun it was evident that many of the
young people were enthused and
chal lenged and prov ided with
opportunities to help them grow in their
faith. Billy Fife from Donaghadee led the
worship - one worship song 'God is a
good good father, that's who he is and I
am loved by him, that's who I am' -
proved a very popular. Laura Stevenson
from Mount Merrion parish was the main
speaker for the weekend. Her talks were
about us being God's Masterpiece. Special
thanks to all the DDYC team for
arranging a great weekend. Also thanks to
Keli, Ruby and Keith for helping with
transportation.
God willing anyone in the age group of 11
-17 years will be able to attend next year.
Although primarily the weekend is for
those in the confirmation classes, it is
open to all young people in the age group
specified. The young people from
Dromore parish who attended really
enjoyed the weekend and all would
encourage others to come along next
time.
The next YOUTH event will be in
Holywood Parish on Saturday 9th April at
7.30 p.m. There will be worship, games
and lots more to enjoy.
If you book now for Summer Madness it will
cost less. After 1st June the price increases.
Anyone interested in attending, either of
these events, please text me on
07715 602078 - leave your name and
short message and I will get back to you.
God bless. Margaret

The seventeenth century was not a great time to live peacefully in Europe. From
1618 - 1648 the thirty years war was raging. Lutherans and Calvinists were striving
for freedom from the rule of Roman Catholocism in parts of France, Switzerland,
Germany, the Flemish States and the Netherlands.
John Knox, who became a follower of Calvin’s teaching, after meeting him in Geneva
in the 1500’s, returned to Scotland and helped to write the new “Confession of
Faith” for the newly created Reformed Church of Scotland - the Kirk, later to be
known as Presbyterians.
By the 1620s many of the lowland Scots coming to Ulster were Presbyterians or
Covenanters. Of course, like the native Irish catholics these new planters resented
the power of the Church of England (and Ireland) over their lives. There was also
much hostility against the planters from the local Irish peasantry in some areas.
After two years of poor harvests in 1621 and 1623, the people had a relatively
peaceful period until two disastrous years of bad harvests in 1638 and 1639. But all
the while the old Irish Lords (who had lost both land and privilege to the planters)
were plotting. After the years of poor harvests and no relief for rent or taxes, during
the final months of 1640 and the spring of 1641 many Irish families rose up in
rebellion.
Locally Sir Conn Magennis marched from Rathfriland with around two hundred men.
On the 23rd of October they burned Dromore on their way to Lisburn, but here
they were turned back. They tried again to take the town, a few days later, but Lord
Montgomery and Lord Hamilton had gathered reinforcements from North Down,
Strangford and the Ards, they duly routed the rebels. Elsewhere the insurgents
caused much loss of life - at Portadown over a hundred Protestants (men women
and children) were forced into the river Bann and drowned. In Cavan amd Monaghan
many Protestant small holdings were burned and the farm stock stolen. So if you
need a date to say when “the Troubles” started in Northern Ireland October 1641
would be one.
Atrocities weren’t confined to just one side, there are many stories of revenge. The
Bloody Bridge, outside Newcastle, gets it’s name from this time in history, when the
troops of Sir James Montgomery were chasing rebels to South Down, they “levelled
a few old scores” by butchering them at the Bloody Bridge.

Happy Ending
Comment from a parishioner: ‘Our vicar’s sermons always have a happy ending. The
moment they’ve ended, everyone feels happy.’
Nun and jeep
Found in a diocesan magazine: A nun driving her jeep in the Middle East ran out of
petrol. The only container she could find was a chamber pot, in which she collected
petrol and with great difficulty refilled the jeep. Some Sheikhs looking on observed:
‘Sister, we don’t share your religion, but we admire your faith.’
Heaven
Seen in a parish magazine: “We shall be meeting on Wednesday when the subject will
be ‘Heaven - how do we get there?’ Transport by bus is available at 6.45pm opposite
the King’s Arms.
Choir
Seen in a parish magazine: Next Sunday the choir will give a recital, after which the
church will be closed for repairs.
Reception
Two television aerials met one day and fell madly in love with each other. Eventually
they decided to get married and booked the local Church. Apparently the service was
not up to much but the reception was excellent!
Miscellaneous observations on daily life
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it.
Based on my calculations, I can retire five years after I die.
I recently decided to sell my vacuum cleaner - all it was doing was gathering dust.

CMS Ireland are currently seeking to recruit an individual who would be inter-
ested in home-schooling one of our Mission Partner’s children, in a Christian
Mission hospital in Uganda for eight months. It would ideally suit a young adult
who is considering a gap year before settling down into their chosen career path;
someone considering a career break, or a retired teacher.
