FOREWORD
The National Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adultspublishes this DIRECTORY OF RESIDENT CAMPS FOR PERSONS WITH SPECIAL HEALTHNEEDS as an aid to all persons concerned with or seeking information aboutcamping for individuals with special health problems. This Directoryincludes only those residential camps which identify themselves as servingchildren and adults with physical, mental, social, and/or emotional handicaps,or those camps which report that they have specifically adapted their programsto accommodate persons with disabilities.
Previous editions, titled the DIRECTORY OF CAMPS FOR THE HANDICAPPED,listed (say camp programs as well as resident camps. The listing of day campswas discontinued as it was found that day camps tend to fluctuate inschedules and sites to a much greater extent from year to year than doresidential programs. Persons seeking to identify day camps in their areashould contact their local Information, Referral, and Follow-up Service;Recreation Department or Commission; Board of Education; or related publicor private agencies for information on exiting or planned day camp programsin specific areas.
Disabling conditions are classified and listed in the Index under thefollowing headings: Cardiac Disorders; Cerebral Palsy; Diabetes; EmotionalDisturbances; Epilepsy; Mental Retardation; Organic Brain Damage; PhysicalDisabilities, Unspecified; Respiratory Diseases; Speech and/or He..4ring; andVisual Impairments. Several of these categories include related disabilities;i.e., "Organic Brain Damage" includes perceptual handicaps and learningdisabilities. In some instances where the type of disability was statedvery broadly, such as "All Physical Disabilities," editorial license wasexercised and those camps were indexed under "Physical Disabilities,Unspecified." Camps which listed orthopedic or neurological handicaps werealso arbitrarily placed in the Index category of "Physical Disabilities,Unspecified." This license was exercised in the Index only, however, andeach individual camp description states the specific disabilities accepted,as submitted to the editor.
The "E" sign before the name of a camp indicates that the camp is eitherowned, operated, or in some degree supported by the Easter Seal Society.
THE INCLUSION OF A CAMP IN THE DIRECTORY DOES NOT IMPLY APPROVAL, AND THEOMISSION OF A CAMP DOES NOT IMPLY DISAPPROVAL. IT IS RECOMMENDED THATDECISIONS AS TO THE APPROPRIATENESS OF FACILITIES, STAFF AND PROGRAM IN ANYINSTANCE BE MADE INDIVIDUALLY AND ON THE BASIS OF PERSONAL CONTACT ORCORRESPONDENCE WITH THE LISTED SPONSORING AGENCY.
IT IS FURTHER RECOMMENDED THAT THE SELECTION OF A SPECIFIC CAMPINGPROGRAM TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHETHER THE CAMP HAS BEEN ACCREDITED BY THEAMERICAN CAMPING ASSOCIATION. INQUIRIES REGARDING CURRENT ACA ACCREDITATIONOF ANY CAMP SHOULD BE MADE DIRECTLY TO THE LISTED SPONSORING AGENCY.
