The Earth’s
Structure
• The air that surrounds the earth.
• Extends about 1,000 miles above the earth’s surface.
Atmosphere
• Made up of the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water.
• Consists of 70 per cent of the earth’s surface.
Hydrosphere
• Lithosphere• Also known as the Earth’s
crust.• Makes up 30 per cent of the
Earth’s surface.
•The part of the earth where life is found.

Inside the Earth
• Inner Core
• Outer Core
• Mantle
• Crust
Inside the Earth
• Lies 4,000 miles below the surface of the earth.
• Believed to be solid.• Consists of Iron and
Nickel
Inner Core
• Begins about 1,800 miles below the surface of the earth.
• Made up of melted Iron and Nickel.
Outer Core
• Thick layer of dense, hot rock.
• The rock consists of silicon, oxygen, aluminum, iron, and magnesium.
Mantle
• Thin layer, extending perhaps 3 to 30 miles below the surface.
• Consists of huge plate like sections of rock that float on a partially melted layer in the upper mantle.
• Includes the continents and ocean basins.
