Hopefully by the time you read this, you will have had a chance to partake in at least one of the

fantastic food related events that formed part of June’s inaugural Appetite festival. Now bloated but content we look forward to July in search of stimulation for some of our neglected other senses. Thankfully we live in the Stow so there’s not one but two new festivals this month, this time targeting our appetites for comedy and film.

The very first listing in this issue kicks off a week long star-studded series of nights featuring some of the best comic talent the UK has to offer. Susan and Alaric (the E List’s very first Local Heroes) have lined up a stellar cast all set to hone their material in front of a Walthamstow audience before taking their shows on to the Edinburgh Festival.

July will also see the return of the Walthamstow International Film Festival with various screening and film related fun going on around the town. There is even a film masterclass for aspiring directors and actors with Walthamstow based filmmaker, Barry Bliss (Saturday 6).

Talking of film, there was great news last month when the local campaign to revive the old EMD cinema on Hoe Street as a west-end quality entertainment venue took another step forward. The government’s ruling to reject plans to turn it into a church vindicated the years local residents have spent writing countless letters to save this Grade II* building. Hopefully now it can be allowed to fulfil its potential and help regenerate the heart of Walthamstow. June saw another long running campaign propelled by local residents, finally reach its rightful conclusion, when the William Morris Gallery was awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2013. Both Gallery and cinema share the same potential to bring visitors and much needed spending to the area, just look at the amazing visitor numbers recorded by the Gallery since it reopened. Fingers crossed we’ll witness a similar outcome for the EMD one day soon.

This issue celebrates another potential star attraction in our midst with Gods Own Junkyard (see our Local Hero feature this month). This gallery is owned by Chris Bracey, who is reputed to have Europe’s largest collection of neon, including amazing vintage and fairground signs as well as many he created for Hollywood films. Sadly he tells me this hidden gem is under threat from developers. Who knows with the right support and investment this too could have the potential to be a world class attraction.

Walthamstow is truly a land of potential.

WalthamstowDiaryBetween forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17

British high streets are dying; rising rents, competition from supermarkets and shopping centres, and the ease of online shopping are all contributing to the decline of the traditional town centre. Walthamstow is not immune to this problem, a swarm of Tesco stores have recently appeared across E17, offering discounts and prices that smaller local traders can’t compete with. When retailers close down they are usually replaced with pound shops, chicken shops or betting shops, the result of which is even less variety on our high streets, and less variety makes it even harder to encourage shoppers to spend their money locally. With all of this competition is the death knell about to sound for Walthamstow’s shopping areas?

Saturday 15th June was the ‘love your high street’ day, and despite the rain lots of people ventured out to support local traders and have fun at the same time. I went to two events, the first was on the town square at the top of the market and the second was on Wood Street. The street really went to town with their celebrations; there were a couple of stages, rides for the kids, and the street itself was closed allowing traders to set up stalls along the usually busy thoroughfare. Wood Street is a great example of a high street with variety, offering a fantastic market, some great cafes, a garden centre and the amazing Gods Own Junkyard (page 6). Where else could you buy vintage clothes, antique furniture or a Viking costume?

Are the high streets of Walthamstow dying? Struggling perhaps but there’s still plenty of fight left in them. Wood Street is on the up and Walthamstow market is still thriving and since the Chequers re-opened,

a new group of people have been introduced to the High Street, many sampling the delights of the naan bakery next door. Throw in the impending regeneration of St James Street and perhaps the future looks brighter. We can all do our bit to help though, so next time you need something try shopping local and supporting our brilliant local traders.

Tell us one memory about Walthamstow when you were growing up. I was brought up in Walthamstow Village and was always fascinated by the local shop windows – I remember Geoffrey Drayton’s in the Ancient House had orange cooking ware and lampshades which were amazing, I’d never seen anything like it.

Tell us something about Walthamstow we might not know? We have done photoshoots at God’s Own Junk Yard with some amazing celebs! Idris Elba, Alesha Dixon, Eliza Doolittle, Sharleen Spiteri, Professor Green to name a few.

You were originally a graphic designer, what first attracted to you the world of neon? Around 1969, when I was 15 years old, the Bruce Nauman exhibition at the Hayward Gallery showed me neon as commercial products could be used as art.

What was it like working in Soho in the 70s? There was quite an undercurrent between East End guys and Maltese gangs. Paul Raymond was the Godfather, but it was an exciting opportunity for me to turn sleaze into sexy Vegas.

How did you become involved in films? Whilst working in Soho I met art director, Chris Townsend, which led to working with him on Neil Jordan’s Mona Lisa, starring Bob Hoskins and Michael Caine.

You have created neon pieces for many films including Batman, James Bond and most recently Brad Pitt’s new film, World War Z. What film gave you most satisfaction in terms of your involvement and why? I think working with Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut was amazing. He always worked with natural light so the neon signage was therefore the star, a big contribution to the ambience of each scene.

In these days of LED, neon is loaded with a sense of nostalgia, how has this affected your work? I recently salvaged the Whitbread Brewmaster sign from

Charing Cross Road which was destined for oblivion - everyone loves the glamour of Las Vegas and Piccadilly Circus. My artwork uses both old vintage signage and lyrics from iconic songs to create pieces that are thought provoking.

You have worked with many collaborators from the art and fashion world. Have you any good stories you’d care to share? Working on David LaChapelle’s designs for Selfridges windows was a very stress-filled experience, he was in Las Vegas and New York. There were eleven art pieces to build and I didn’t sleep for three days, but eventually it all came together. The culmination was the switch-on at Selfridges. My wife Lyn and I were with LaChapelle and Pamela Anderson, surrounded by the rich and famous, Bryan Ferry, Nick Rhodes, Vivienne Westwood, etc., it’s hard to be normal in such a completely surreal place after months of stress. Lyn ate Pamela’s prawn cocktail as Pamela wasn’t eating. It was a dark place but everyone had dark glasses on at our table, mainly because of the sheer amount of flash photography. I’ve got used to that now, it’s very weird.

Tell us about God’s Own Junkyard? The Junkyard is a place which has evolved over 40 years. It’s my back catalogue, my past

life, a 3D photo album, old signs, neon icons from film and fashion, high value artworks of £20k, a neon chapel, Jesus with neon guns, son of a gun, all randomly lying around. The site has planning consent for thirty flats, the landlords are selling the land for £1,200,000, which I don’t have, so Gods Own Junk Yard looks like it’s going. The council are not interested, so I may be forced out of the borough to another area of London where a council have some land I can use and realise the importance of the Junkyard.

As the owner of Europe’s largest collection of neon, what is your favourite piece and why? My favourite neon piece is the original ‘HOTEL’ sign I made for Tim Burton. It’s a simple sign but it’s been with me for over 20 years.

Surely neon could introduce some much needed glamour to Hoe Street. Any ideas? A large street installation like Walthamstow Stadium would make it a landmark/attraction. It brings life and excitement, interest and intrigue.

I think when the new cinema is built there should be a neon artwork on the façade on the corner of Hoe Street and the market. Something inspiring and glamorous that defines Walthamstow with movement and colour.

LOCAL HERO

Chris BraceyWander down Vallentin Road to where it meets Wood Street and chances are you’ll find God’s Own Junkyard. This is the domain of the Walthamstow born and world renowned King of Neon, Chris Bracey. It’s an illuminated magical kingdom where films, fashion and glamour merge with contemporary art.

One of the things I have always loved about being an estate agent (no sniggering at the back) is that you are constantly meeting new people. I have been valuing homes in E17 for too long to mention, but at the old height of the market in 2007 I would be visiting anything between 25 and 30 properties a week. If you multiply that by the months and years, this works out to be a hell of a lot of conversations with locals. And of course a lot of cups of tea with some of Walthamstow’s older residents, many happy to share their first hand knowledge of the area’s history.

I was reminded of some of these chats because we have been marketing quite a few Warner Estates built properties recently. When I first arrived in Walthamstow one of the first things I noticed were the roads full of terracotta coloured purpose built Victorian flats. I was curious about the history of the master builders who shaped these large swathes of this part of North East London and would like to share this month what I have learnt.

In the 1880’s T.C.T. Warner, one of the largest land owners in Walthamstow began to develop the Clock House (Pretoria Avenue) Estate and by 1900 The Warner Estate Co Ltd had built up most of Blackhorse Road between Edward Road and Pretoria Avenue and completed a substantial terraced business development of shops and offices at the west end of the High Street. The opening of Blackhorse Road railway station in 1894 started to attract industry to the area north of Ferry Lane so the Warner Company bought the Winns Estate in 1898 to develop the area west of Lloyd Park.

Dwellings built by the Warner company, which often bear the mark ‘W’, are notable for the quality of their workmanship and are in distinctive styles, often in bold red brick, with gables, recessed porches, and tiled roofs. Terraces of circa 1899–1908 at Highams Park, between Winchester and Chingford Roads, are characterised by fanciful ornament picked out in white plaster on a rough-cast background.

Most houses south of Forest Road, including many designed for two families as flats, were for the working classes, but middle-class terraces were also built, for example on the Rectory Manor Estate between Howard Road and The Drive. In the north-east of the parish near the forest middle-class houses, often semi-detached, predominated. In Montalt Road the Warner company in 1898 completed an impressive row of three-storey, six bedroom, semi-detached ‘Lodges’, designed by John Dunn in brown and red brick, overlooking the golf links and Highams Park.

In 1912 the Warner company undertook to co-operate in the urban district council’s town planning scheme. That agreement produced in the north and north-

east of the town an informal pattern of growth in contrast to the rigid lines of earlier development in the south. The first fruit of the agreement was an estate of some 300 houses laid out on garden-city lines and built by the company in 1912–14 between Billet Road and Pennant Terrace.

The Warner Estates company continued the Billet Road development from Ardleigh Road to Penrhyn Crescent in 1927–8 after purchasing Moon’s Farm.

Another interesting fact is that most of the names of roads on the Warner estates were named after members of their family, and Leucha is no exception. Her full name was LEUCHA DIANA MAUDE, who was the daughter of CLEMENTINA and CORNWALLIS Viscount HAWARDEN Earl de MONTAULT. (Road names in capitals) In 1883 she married Sir Thomas COURTNEY THEYDON WARNER. They had a son EDWARD Courtney Warner who in 1920 married NESTA DOUGLAS- PENNANT. There are many more roads named thus.

In the 1980’s and 90’s Warner Estates decided to start selling their properties and this is when the front doors started to change colour as home owners put their individual stamp on their property. In 2000, Warner Estates sold about 2400 properties to Circle 33 housing trust and about 600 of these still had outside toilets.

The original Warner Flats in E17 all had trademark green doors and windows, there are still a few of them around. Leucha Road is an exception and has always had royal blue doors and the original street lamps.

Fancy some good estate agency advice for Warner flat buyers and owners. Did you know how to make a ground floor Warner Flat similar to a first floor? If you remove the wall of the first bedroom (with window overlooking side return) and the understairs cupboard you can make this area a 17’ lounge.

To close I would just like to say that E17 is a place full of ambiguities and this is a positive statement. If you take the initials of Warner Estates you get the word ‘WE’, a sentiment close to William Morris’ socialist heart, and his declaration ‘fellowship is life’.
