Page 5: The Dr. Phillips Post (Nov.-Jan. 15, 2016)

Dr. Phillips Charities isproud to announce

the opening of the brandnew, state-of- the-art daycare facility for TheLearning Center of Dr.Phillips, a loyal tenant forover 35 years. Currently lo-cated on Della Drive, TheLearning Center of Dr.Phillips has provided a rich, nurturing educational expe-rience for local childrensince 1980. Due to the age of their

current building and rede-velopment plans for thearea, the decision to move

their operation was made, and plans to develop a one-of-a-kind, exceptional day-care project began. In early 2016, they will be

moving to their new loca-tion at 8004 Banyan Boule-vard, in the heart of Dr.Phillips, just south of South-west Middle School. Thisarchitecturally stunning,Spanish style learning insti-tution will closely resemblethe Dr. Phillips Charities of-fice headquarters and thenewly renovated Dr. PhillipsYMCA, and will accommo-date approximately 135

children, ranging from in-fants to Pre-K. This 7,280 +/- square foot

building will include a cov-ered porte-cochere, ampleparking and easy accessright off of Dr. PhillipsBoulevard. With large, well-appointed classrooms anda soothing, cheerful interior, children will feel safe, happy and ready to learn. The playground will includeall new, modern equipmentand splash pads, and willbe the perfect place formaking friends and explor-ing the great outdoors. In the pursuit of living aquality life, we sometimes

have to accept the fact thathome care is a necessity, whether it be for ourselvesor a loved one. It is a partic-ularly stressful decisionwhen we are dealing with aparent whose quality of lifehas noticeably diminished.Dad may not be leaving thehouse as much as he usedto. Mom may stop meetingfriends or go to the storewhen she needs to. Butproviding assistance foryourself and your loved oneneed not be a difficult jour-ney. Armed with the under-standing of a few basics willgive you the tools you needto make an educated deci-sion with regard to in-homecare.There are two types of in-

home care: private dutyand Medicare home health. Some companies havebegun to provide both,

while others specialize inone or the other. Home careis heavily regulated by thestate and federal govern-ment. One of the regula-tions that you should beaware of is that you chooseyour agency. Hospitals,long-term care facilities, and agencies that provideboth services are legallyobligated to give you op-tions, and not push any oneparticular agency.Private duty provides

services that Medicare andmost insurances do notcover. Companion supportservices include transporta-tion (to doctor’s appoint-ments, church, groceryshopping, etc.), light house-keeping, and preparing andserving meals. Private dutycan also provide a certifiednursing assistant or homehealth aide care that in-cludes companion serviceswith the addition of bathing,

toileting, and other personalcare assistance. Many private duty compa-

nies also have highly skillednurses available if needed.Private duty is designed toimprove the client’s qualityof life by helping them con-tinue to do the things theylove to do in the comfort oftheir own home. These services are

charged hourly and can beas little as four hours/oneday a week through 24/7around-the-clock care. While most insurances donot cover ongoing privateduty, some long-term careinsurance companies willcover this type of care if theclient meets certain criteria.Medicare home health

and most private insur-ances require a doctor’sorder to qualify for reim-bursement. A registerednurse (RN) or physical ther-apist (PT) will visit your

home to assess if you oryour loved one’s needsmeet Medicare’s definitionof homebound. The mainrequirement for you to un-derstand is that there mustbe a need for a skilled pro-fessional (RN or PT), e.g.,wound care for an RN or re-gaining strength with PT.Once this is established, and under very strict regu-lations and a limitedamount of time, Medicarewill reimburse for theseservices. Another important fact to

understand is that Medicareand most private insur-

ances reimburse by visit, not per hour. These profes-sionals, and on some occa-sions, home health aides, are limited. Another exam-ple is a home health aidewho works under Medicareguidelines, and comes toyour home to do bathingand personal care. But un-like private duty, the profes-sional does not providecompanionship or personalassistant services.I see so many lovely peo-

ple wait until they are hospi-talized or their parents arein crisis before they reachout for help. My hope is that

as we educate our commu-nity, more people will haveassistance in place to mini-mize or completely avoidcrisis. I have seen firsthandhow extraordinary the rela-tionship between caregiverand client can become. In-deed, I have seen it trans-form lives.

EVENTS

Page 6: The Dr. Phillips Post (Nov.-Jan. 15, 2016)

Retirement offers peoplea great opportunity to

start something new. In ad-dition, life expectancytrends indicate that an in-creasing number of babyboomers should be pre-pared for a long life in re-tirement. While this is goodnews, it also creates a fewthings to think about:• Financial resources may

need to extend for a retire-

ment that could last two-to-three decades or longer.• Healthy, vibrant individ-

uals may not be preparedto “shut down” and enterinto a traditional retirement. In light of these dual con-

siderations, it may be timeto rethink plans to retire at atraditional age, such as 65.For many, extending workinto later life may be neces-sary to ensure long-term fi-

nancial security. For others,it may not be a financial ne-cessity as much as a de-sired lifestyle choice. Thosewho are healthy and ener-getic might not be ready togive up on work just yet. What do you do now?

Changing Career FocusAs you enter your late 50s

and early 60s, you may bethinking about what’s nextin life. High on the list formany is maintaining asense of purpose as yougrow older. In many cases, continuing to work in somecapacity is part of thisequation. A number of peo-ple view the period ap-proaching and enteringretirement from their careeras a time to begin a newchapter in their lives. This may mean reinventing

yourself and the role youplay as a contributor in theworkforce. It requires “out-of-the-box” thinking to deter-mine what you may besuited for that differs from

what you’ve already beendoing in your career. Therange of options at thisstage in life may be broaderthan you think. They include:• Building on your experi-

ence by becoming a con-sultant for your formeremployers and others witha similar need. • Taking on a part-time

role with your current em-ployer, something that givesyou more flexibility to pur-sue other interests.• Pursuing a long-held

dream to start a business, possibly in a field completelydifferent from what you’vepursued in the past.• Providing your services

to benefit organizationsand people in a volunteercapacity.

Looking for PurposeA developing trend is the

desire among many babyboomers who want to keepworking to find an occupa-tion that provides an in-creased sense of purpose

in life. Money may not bethe prime motivation tokeep working. Particularlyfor those who are more fi-nancially secure, the drudg-ery of the workaday worldthey may have experiencedbefore can be set aside. Now is a time to seek workthat is more engaging andpurpose-filled.Older Americans should

not rule out the opportunityto take advantage of theiravailable time to relax aswell. Taking time off afterspending years dedicatedto a career and accumulat-ing wealth is well deserved. It might also give you anopportunity to “re-tool,” re-consider your options anddetermine the best courseof action for the next phaseof your life. The idea of “reinventing

yourself” later in life can bea viable option for you.Make sure you have your financial house in order andavoid taking steps thatmight put your long-term

financial security at risk. This can be an exciting timein life full of new opportu-nity. You will want to be cer-tain that any choices youmake are consistent withyour abilities, energy and financial capabilities.
