It is estimated that losses associated with the endophyte in Kentucky 31 fescue cost the beef industry $1 billion dollars annually in losses. These losses are difficult to measure on farm because they are indirect, such as reduced weaning weight, extended breed back time, decreased milk production, and poor average daily gain as compared to performance without consumption of the negative endophyte. Through good culling management strategies, cattle that cannot SURVIVE on KY31 leave the farm, but those remaining cows are still not THRIVING.

There are two schools of thought to address the negative impact of KY31: dilution or conversion. Dilution involves interseeding perennial clovers and, in some cases, other grasses into the existing stand. Research has shown that the presence of perennial clovers positively impacts cattle performance. Conversion is a more involved strategy that eliminates the endophyte infected KY31 completely, which gets replaced with a novel endophyte fescue or other cool season perennial that best fills the forage production curve. Research has shown an even greater positive impact from this conversion strategy. Consider your management strategy, on-farm constraints, and production needs to select the best strategy for your farm.
