It was 125 years ago this summer when League Park, now a museum and neighborhood baseball park, hosted its rst major league baseball game, drawing 9,000 fans.

The storied ball park – the location of this year’s Ward 7 New Day in Hough Festival sponsored by Councilman TJ Dow – sits at the corner of Lexington Avenue and East 66th Street in the Hough neighborhood. In its glory days it was home to the National League Cleveland Spiders, the American League Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Buckeyes of the Negro American League.

Within 18 years of its opening, the park

was expanded to hold 27,000 fans who, over the decades, witnessed some of the greatest moments in baseball history, played out by some of the famous players of the game – Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Satchel Paige, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Bob Feller.

League Park was the setting for the 1920 World Series in which Indians second baseman, William Adolph Wambsganss, executed the sport’s rst unassisted triple play.

On August 11, 1929, New York Yankee Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run at League Park in a game the Indians won 6-5.

It was Ruth’s 30th home run of the season. A young man named Jake Geiser of New Philadelphia, Ohio, retrieved Ruth’s ball and pocketed it as a souvenir. But the Babe talked Geiser into giving it back to him in exchange for another ball he would autograph, plus a $20 bill. Geiser accepted the deal.

The Indians continued to play at League Park into the late 1940s. By the

1950s, much of the park was demolished and used for a playground. In 1979, the site was designated a Cleveland landmark and eventually was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2011, Cleveland City Council approved legislation to restore the remains of the park and it reopened in 2014 with a new baseball diamond.

An original section of the building that housed the ticket o ce is now home of the Baseball Heritage Museum.
