The 2014 Champions of CycleSport Dinner, supported by Broadstone and BDO LLP, freewheeled to suc-cess, raising around £200,000 for Horsham based children’s charity Action Medical Research.

The event, now in its fi fth year, and organised by the charity, took place on Thursday, November 27 at the Battersea Evolution, with cy-cling legend Chris Boardman MBE as the event ambassador.

Sir Dave Brailsford CBE, Jody Cundy MBE, Stephen Roche, Dean Downing, Dani King MBE, Hannah Walker, Jon Mould, Yanto Barker, Ian Wilkinson, Dean Downing, Martyn Ashton, Roger Hammond, Tom Stewart, Matti Hemmings, and Jason Queally also attended.

The evening was hosted by Sky News anchor Dermot Murnaghan, and presenter, commentator and cartoonist Marty MacDonald re-turned as MC. The Cycle Show host and TV presenter Matt Barbet wel-comed everyone, David Millar spoke to the audience via a pre-recorded message, and supporter Davina Mc-Call narrated fi lms about riders and the work of the charity.

Guests had the chance to bid for some highly-coveted, money-can’t-buy lots in the live and silent auctions. BBC ‘Match of the day’ commentator Simon Brotherton hosted the live auctions, and artist Paul Oz had created a portrait of Sir Dave Brailsford CBE which raised £4000.

Sarah Stevenson, who organises

the event for Action Medical Re-search, said: “My highlights this year included cycling legend Monty Young, (who recently turned 80) not only signing copies of the Pedal Club Golden Book but also the amazingly long list of awesome champions who attended.”

Sir David Brailsford CBE said: “I always love coming to the Cham-pions of CycleSport dinner and I’m proud to support it. The CycleSport dinner is a celebration of all that’s great about cycling – in the UK as a whole and in particular the rides that Action Medical Research has put on over the past year.”

The views of nearly 3,000 people from across West Sussex will help shape West Sussex County Coun-cil’s 2015/16 spending and savings plans as the authority starts the process of setting its budget this week.

The Council’s Performance and Finance Select Committee will meet on Thursday, December 4, to consider the results of the What Matters to You survey as it consid-ers how to close a funding gap of £68million over the next two years while focusing spending on the ar-eas people have said are most im-portant to them.

Members of the committee will also scrutinise the Council’s draft Future West Sussex 2015-2019 Plan – a pledge between the authority and the public about what will be delivered for them between April 1, 2015 and April 2019.Key investments outlined in the corporate plan include: • £4m per year for the next two

years to alleviate pressure on our adult services budget

• Multi million pound investment in high speed broadband capabil-ity across the county

• A further £15m in the Better Roads programme to improve many of the county’s residential and rural roads

• Significant investment in infra-structure improvements to en-surebusinessescanflourish

• Further investment in the Coun-

cil’s Think Family programme which helps get out of work par-ents back to work and helps those families who need a little bit more support Reductions in government grants

mean that the Council needs to save £68million in the next two years and draft proposals for how this will be achieved will be considered at the meeting.

Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “Local government is facing budget pres-sures like never before but despite the savings that we have to make we are spending the £500-odd mil-lion pound of our budget on services thatmakearealdifferencetopeo-ple’s lives.

“I’m not pretending that there will not be difficult decisions tomake over the coming weeks and months.

“It is inevitable that there will be changes to some services. But this proposed package of savings looks at how we can balance the budget with minimum impact on frontline services which is what people have told us is most important to them.”

In total 51 per cent of residents who responded to the What Mat-ters to You Survey said they would like the council to consider a coun-cil tax reduction or freeze. While 41 per cent said they would consider a council tax increase.

Louise added: “These draft budget figuresarebasedonusfreezingour

proportion of the council tax again because I feel very strongly that we should not increase the burden of West Sussex County Council on our taxpayers, something the major-ity of people who responded to the What Matters To You Survey also agreed with.

“We are doing an awful lot behind the scenes to make savings every day, looking at everything we spend and renegotiating with our major suppliers to reduce costs. We are redesigning parts of the organisa-tion to simplify the way we work and give a better service to our resi-dents customer and we continue to invest in our staff to develop theskills they will need to operate in a differentway.”

Deborah Urquhart, Committee Chairman, added: “West Sussex County Council provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that touch people’s lives in all sorts of differentways.Howthoseservicesare funded and where savings are made have an impact on us all.

“The budget and the corporate plan will be scrutinised in detail be-tweennowandfinaldecisionsbeingmade in February. The views of our residents and their scrutiny of what we do make us better and it’s im-portant that we have our residents’ feedback every step of the way.”

Local pupils from St Andrews Primary School, Nuthurst, Hor-sham, were one of three schools to win a competition to name a gritter.

The winners of the county wide school competition to ‘Name A Gritter’ were announced by West Sussex County Council last week.

Drivers working for County Council contractor Balfour Be-atty parked up three re-named gritters at the three winning schools on Friday, November 28, to show the new names to pupils.

The winning schools were St Andrews Primary School, Nu-thurst, with Bitterly Gritterly, Thomas A Becket Middle School, Worthing, with Olaf, and River Beach Primary School, Little-hampton, with Freddie Salted.

Pupils were also given a safety talk about ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ this winter.

There was also a presentation of a grit bin, grit salt and snow shovel to the school, and a £20 HighStreetvouchertothechildwho created the winning name.

Horsham District Council is em-bracing Small Business Saturday on December 6, by not only sup-porting local small businesses, but also helping budding entrepre-

neurs from two Horsham schools.Students from Millais Girls and

Farlington Girls Schools will be pitching their stalls in the Carfax market from 9.00am to 4.00pm to sell products as part of their Young Enterprise Trade Fair experience.

Young Enterprise is a business competition for schools which has been running for 50 years nation-ally. The competition starts locally within the North Sussex area in-cluding schools from Horsham and Crawley.

Students are tasked to start up a business, including setting up a business bank account, writing a business plan, producing products and selling them to produce income and a profit. They are provided with advisers from the business world – local volunteers who offer their experience of business for free. This year, advisers from Waitrose, San-tander and construction company Willmott Dixon are supporting the six Young Enterprise companies from Millais School.

This Saturday provides the stu-dents and their companies with their first opportunity to test their products by selling them in a real market place. Horsham Young En-terprise Trade Fair can be found in the Carfax between 9am and 4pm. The Young Enterprise competition concludes in April with the area finals after a Dragon’s Den style event in January which tests the companies’ presentations skills. The winners in April go through to the county finals and then possibly onto regional and national finals should their business be successful.

Last Sunday, the Twinning Asso-ciation offered French and Ger-man traditional fayre at the the Horsham Christmas Market pro-moting the partnership with their twin towns Lage in German and St. Maixent-l’École in France.

Chairman Oliver Farley said: “We would like the Horsham community to become more aware of the links with our European neighbours. In the last 25 years we have exchanged visits with both towns involving not only private individuals but also Horsham clubs, schools, organisa-tions and groups. Twinning is all about getting an insight into the culture of a country through devel-oping and fostering good relation-ships.

“Just to give you an example, next year we are hosting groups from France and from Germany, involving sporting and school con-nections. Of course our members return the visits the year after. We will be hosted by our partner towns with a full programme both educa-tional and entertaining. Our partner towns have extremely nice people, very hospitable and embarrasingly generous.

“Additional to that, we run an an-nual French and German language competition for all of the second-ary schools in the area which is

most successful. This year we had for the first time Spanish entries and we are thinking about involving schools in Italy to exchange with our Horsham students.”

The President of the Associa-tion Cllr. O’Connell has been most supportive of the Association’s en-deavours. The prize giving for the schools’ essay competition was hosted in the Council chamber it-self, and, despite a bewilderingly busy schedule, Cllr. O’Connell has even attended committee meetings to encourage our busy members in their efforts.

St Catherine’s Hospice’s annual Tree of Light remembrance ser-vices are taking place during the first three weeks in December.

Tree of Light is a collection of remembrance services held around Sussex and Surrey that are organised by St Catherine’s Hos-pice. The largest service is held at K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley and features readings and songs, giving the chance to honour the memory of someone who has passed away.

Anyone can attend, regardless of whether they have lost some-one recently or some time ago and whether that person was cared for by St Catherine’s or else-where. Losing someone is one

of the hardest things we have to face and many people find com-fort in attending Tree of Light for the chance to pause, reflect and remember the life of someone special as Christmas approach-es. Every year, the St Catherine’s Hos-pice Tree of Light services honour around 3,000 peo-ple.

Karen Norman, Patient & Family Sup-port Team Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “Many people find a lot of comfort in being able to take a moment to remember those who will not be with them

this Christmas. The sense of sup-port that comes from attend-ing the service with people who

have experienced a similar loss is incredibly impor-

tant. Our Tree of Light services are open to everyone and, if you would prefer not to attend our largest service in Crawley, there are others

taking place across Sussex and Surrey.”For more informa-

tion, including a list of ser-vices please go to www.stch.org.uk/TreeOfLight or contact Zoe Dolding at [email protected] or on 01293 447374.

Farlington Sixth Former Amy Hoare is enjoying great success as a chess champion. In August at the British Championships in Wales, Amy won her latest titles: Under-18 British Girl Champion, British and English Women’s Champion.

Amy, 18, began playing chess in Farlington Prep School at a lunch-time club in Prep 3 and now rep-resents England at international competitions. Last year she was part of the England team at the European Youth Championship in Montenegro and achieved a top 20 placing in the prestigious Guernsey International Chess Festival.

In September she competed in the World Youth Chess Champion-ships in Durban, South Africa. 100 countries sent their most promising players, aged 8 to 18, to participate in this event. The England delega-tion consisted of 10 players and 3 coaches.

Amy said: “There were 11 rounds; most days were one round each but on two days we had double rounds which meant that I was playing chess for over 10 hours on some days! I scored 6.5/11 and came 16th overall. A typical day consisted of an hour of preparation with my coach, followed by some of my own prepa-ration until the start of the round at 4.00pm. My games lasted up to 5 1/2 hours, so it was then back to the hotel for dinner and time with my coach to review the game. It was a fantastic experience and I had the

opportunity to play against people from all around the world.”

Louise Higson, Farlington’s Head-mistress, said: “We are very proud of Amy’s achievements and are de-lighted to have a champion in our midst. She has worked exceptionally hard to reach such high standards, and is an outstanding ambassador for Farlington and an excellent role model for the younger girls.”

St Mary’s Church, Horsham host-ed a unique, fundraising concert to remember the heroes of the fi rst and second world wars.

The concert took place on Sat-urday, November 8, and was enti-tled “Unforgettable”. The evening of music and verse was inspired by wartime heroism and featured memorable performances from students from the Performing Arts Department at Collyers, Berkshire Brass Ensemble and St Mary’s Church Choir.

Over £2,000 was raised which will be split between ‘Help for Heroes’, the national charity for wounded members of the Armed Forces, and ‘Friends of St Mary’s’, for the upkeep of the Historic Church Building.

The audience were entertained by dramatic recitals of some of the best known poetry and readings from the times, as well as memorable music, including ‘In Flanders Fields’ and wartime favourites ‘A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square’ and ‘On the sunny side of the street’.

Mark Watts, Chair of Friends of St Mary’s said: “Despite the rainy weather, we had a fantastic turn out of local people supporting the concert. The audience thoroughly enjoyed a range of stirring perfor-mances and we’d like to extend our thanks to all the talented perform-ers who took part. Through ticket sales and generous donations, we were delighted to raise over £2,000 which will be divided between ‘Help for Heroes’ and ‘Friends of St Mary’s’, to help maintain our won-derful Church building.”

Monday, November 24, was the day winter struck Horsham, as a cold snap caused winter wool-lies and warm clothing to be dragged out of the wardrobe. Yet if we lived in a county that was warm all the year round we would have no need for such clothing – the cold winter allows us to change our fashion, style and look.

Just how much can be seen in a fascinating, colourful and amazing cos-tume exhibi-tion ‘Winter Draws On,’ that has just opened at Horsham Dis-trict Council’s Hor-sham Museum & Art Gallery.

The exhibition draws on the Museum’s extensive costume collection, ranging from such items as a pair of men’s breeches covered with rabbit fur to a pair of red nylon knee length Long Johns popular in the 1960s.

From the earliest days, the use of fur and wool to keep warm has been well recorded. In Ro-man times, this country was well known for producing a coarse woollen winter cloth. However, as the exhibition shows, light

weight manmade fi bres devel-oped in the late nineteenth cen-tury enabled developments in style and fashion.

No longer was a wrap round style ‘blanket’ suitable, but items with shape and cut were desired, such as the slate blue, tweed waistcoat and skirt suit by Biba, c. 1968-1970, or the men’s patterned, winter weight, casual over shirt made using Icelan-dic Patterns, from around 1990, both on display in the exhibition.

Along with clothing the display also features

such things as a feather muff ,

warm wool-len socks and paisley shawl, or a gentle-man’s dress-ing gown from the 1930s.

The exhibi-tion is an ec-

lectic mixture of winter clothing

that portrays what the people of Horsham district

wore to keep warm. While not couture, the everyday nature of what is on display makes it an interesting exhibition of cloth-ing from the last 150 years.

The exhibition ‘Winter Draws On’ is now open at Horsham Mu-seum & Art Gallery and closes in May 2015.

Also showing in the Photo-graphic Gallery – Roaring Hor-sham, photographs from 1920s and 1930s Horsham, closing Jan-uary 31, 2015.

On Tuesday, November 18, Far-lington Prep School girls all par-ticipated in a half-day workshop run by The History Man commem-orating World War I.

The History Man brought with him a huge range of arte-facts, in order to bring the subject alive. This gave the girls a bet-ter understand-ing of why the centenary of the start of World War I is so impor-tant to us.

They tried on uni-forms, discovered the complicated causes of the war, felt the weight of guns, looked at propaganda posters and com-pleted some military training.

The workshop culminated in each

group going ‘over the top’ during which they had to role-play climb-ing out of the trenches and enter-ing no-man’s-land before being

gunned down. One of the girls in Prep 6 said: “I

learned how it felt to go ‘over the top’.

It was really scary when we acted it out.

“It was hor-rible to experi-ence war, es-pecially at the end when the

soldiers went into n o - m a n ’ s - l a n d

and had to cut their way through the wire.”

The girls came away hav-ing enjoyed the hands-on essence of the day, but realising the sombre nature of what they had just re-en-acted.

If you suspect it; report it. These are the words which will defi ne how we began the 21st Century.

Our fi rst decade began in hope and appears to have tended towards fear. With the recent police street exercise raising public awareness of terrorism and reporting threats I am left to wonder if we feel safe about anything at all.

The continuing mantra to be sus-picious, to be aware, to be careful, appears to have escalated over this current decade. Personally I fi nd it utterly amazing that as a British citizen I lived through a few decades of mainland bombings by Irish ter-rorists and never once did I feel the need to become suspicious or exert additional awareness.

A brief search on the Internet shows that UK residents experi-enced hundreds of attacks over thirty years. Meanwhile similar modern terrorism incidents num-bered fewer than ten.

This is not to devalue the victims of those tragedies or those events but to ask why our ability to asses risk has so suddenly eroded into fear. To look at Horsham I have to wonder just how much does an ‘increase in awareness’ lead to an

increase in intolerance. I fear this may be the early days in the grow-ing requirement to report and in-spect each others behaviour.

A fear exacerbated by the recently introduced Counter Terrorism and Security bill which places reporting of suspicious behaviour onto vari-ous specifi ed authorities; which will include councils, prisons, schools, universities, nursery schools, NHS Trusts and the police.

We may very well be passing laws that will encourage neighbour to check upon neighbour and teachers to become political overseers.

Whilst we focus ever more on dis-tant political issues whose impact is brought ever closer to home are we not in danger of missing some very real signals of abuse closer to our streets. In the same weekend that the public were encouraged to learn how to become more aware; we demonstrated precisely just how unfocused we are.

As a young couple were terrorised by a gang of teenagers whilst sur-rounded by CCTV systems whose installation and operation was, as we are constantly informed, for the safety and security of the public. I doubt that couple felt safe or secure and no matter how much they, or any other onlooker, suspected the potential actions of those teenagers.

If we are to suspect anything it is our lack of genuine social aware-ness.

A lack of community social awareness

Thursday, December 4, was - for those who don’t know - Saint Barbara’s Day!

You may not know who St Barbara was, but the important bit for you gardeners is that yester-day was the traditional day you cut and bring into the house branch-es of fl owering cherry so that in the warmth they can blossom on Christmas Day.

I am sure if you sneak out today, you can still achieve this great fl oral tradition.

As the weather has still not really turned, I am sure you are tempted to mow the grass. If I could recom-mend that you don’t as at this time of year the grass is under a large amount of stress. If you leave it too short in the winter months you risk allowing it to get slime mould and ultimately rot off , leaving unsightly bald patches in the lawn. If you do want to do something useful, get a garden fork and spike the lawn, adding sharp sand as you go. On our heavy clay any aid to drainage will be gratefully received.

If your lawn suff ers every year from patches, as I know a fair few do, try to add as much sand and compost to the lawn as is viable (without drowning it) in the win-

ter months. This will hopefully aid its overall condition. If however, your garden rarely sees the sun in the winter, it may be time to think of alternatives to grass. The adverts might say that grass is ‘evergreen’, but the truth be told, it has its limits and one thing it doesn’t like is to sit wet with no warmth from the sun.

As it is Christmas at some stage soon - and I know money is a tad tight for many - you may be won-dering what to buy your beloved green fi ngered friends.

Books are often a good idea (aren’t I old fashioned). But where does one get the low down on what is good and what isn’t?

‘The Plant Hunters’ by M. Tyler-Whittle is a great book for anybody who wants to know a little more about the history of our plants. So too is the book ‘The Origin of Plants’ by Maggie Cambell-Culver. Both come highly recommended by me.

If your gardener is a bit more technically minded, and requires availability on an e-reader, then might I suggest the exceptional book ‘The Well-Tempered Garden’ by Christopher Lloyd – easily found on e-books.com. (It too can also be found in paperback if you prefer to feel the paper.)

Whilst thinking about these sug-gestions, please remember not to support any tax avoidance schemes that may or may not sell the above items. Let’s keep the Christmas money in our UK economy.

A car club in Horsham is growing in popularity among residents look-ing for cheaper ways of getting around.

Horsham Co-Wheels – a scheme funded by West Sussex County Council - was launched in the town in June and is a practical alternative to the cost and hassle of owning a car.

Residents or businesses can hire one of two brand new cars, either a Toyota Yaris parked in Brighton Road, or a Toyota Aygo parked in North Street, near Horsham railway station.

Prices start at £3.75 per hour, plus a 13p mileage rate – with special rates for overnight or 24-hour hire.

The prices cover fuel costs and comprehensive insurance, so any-one who drives less than 8,000 miles a year will save themselves money.

Twenty-nine residents have joined the scheme already.

A third car will join the fleet in early 2015 and will be parked in Bishopric.

Teacher Robert Mayfield, of Hor-sham, uses the scheme for family visits and medical appointments.

He said: “I needed to sell my car, and it seemed to be a cost effective way of getting around, rather than relying on public transport.

“I am now no longer responsible for a car that in the end sits out in

the street, costing me in the region of a thousand pounds a year, which is a good start.

“At the moment the co-wheels car is used on the basis of as and when.

“I have only been using the cars since July, so for the moment I would say I am saving at least £60 a month.

“The bank balance is feeling the effect!”

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pi-

eter Montyn, said: “Horsham Co-Wheels is part of a wider package of measures which have been intro-duced to promote sustainable travel in the town.

“It supports economic growth and reduces carbon emissions.

“Car clubs provide a cheaper, greener and more convenient alter-native to owning a car and we want more people to using the scheme so it can continue to expand.”

Air Cadets from 1015 (Horsham) Squadron are celebrating a huge success after bringing home four trophies.

This highly impressive achieve-ment was gained when the unit par-ticipated in the Wing Cross Country Competition held at Crowborough Training Camp, East Sussex.

The Cadets took part in a gruel-ling three mile course amidst some rather watery and boggy conditions which did not deter the cadets par-ticipating.

The Senior Girls team was ex-tremely proud as they were able to defend their title as winners of the Senior Girls Trophy for the second year running. The day ended with the Cadets winning four trophies including the coveted Overall Win-ners Trophy. Group winners can look forward to representing Sussex

at the next level in the New Year. The Training Officer of 1015 (Hor-

sham) Air Cadets, Sergeant Kieren Clarke-Hill said: “I am very pleased with these results, bringing home so many trophies is tremendous achievement and demonstrates the resolve and commitment of our ca-dets.”

Cross Country is one of many sports offered by Horsham Air Ca-dets, they also have the chance to do many activities including visits to RAF Stations, Adventure Training & the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Horsham Air Cadets is recruiting, if you are interested in joining and are aged between 13 & 18, you can contact us on [email protected] for details of our next open evening in January. We also welcome appli-cations for adult volunteers, who can contact us on the same address.

It’s been just over a year since David Thompson and his wife Rebecca opened local music shop Sussex Soundhouse in Horsham.

Following the closure last year of Horsham Music in East Street, Da-vid saw the opportunity to open a new shop in Blatchford Close, and the last year has been an adventure for David and his wife.

David said: “The opportunity came up when the Horsham shop closed its doors. I bought all the stock from Horsham Music for the new shop here in Blatchford Close. We stripped it out in a day and sat on all the stock for around two to three months as we couldn’t find anywhere to go. Then we found a vacancy in these units and they are fantastic.”

The last year has seen the busi-ness grow with plenty of new stock and further plans to expand online.

“We have the Amazon site we sells goods from and we are plan-ning on launching a website next

year when the e-commerce side of the business launches next year we’re going to be offering around 30,000 products.”

Sussex Soundhouse currently stocks musical instruments geared towards entry level to intermedi-ate musicians, and they offer a wide range of musical accessories cater-ing to the local community.

“We offer honest, pro-fessional advice to customers. I’ll rec-ommend what best suits you, I won’t sell someone something more expensive than what the best need.”

David and Rebecca have described the last year as a huge learning curve and they’ve learnt a lot, building up their stock and offering the best customer service to their customers.

David said: “It’s a one stop shop for musicians, people come in for accessories, repairs or for their first guitar. We can do all manner of repairs, clean ups and can source parts, we also offer amp repairs.”

Sussex Soundhouse stocks gui-tars, ukuleles, keyboards, drum kits, amplifiers, harmonicas, mu-sic books and even Aulos recorders which you may recognise from pri-mary school music lessons!

“We also take orders for certain products as we can’t display every item in store. If it’s music related we’ll help you find it.

“I buy what I personally like. Any instruments we stock I have played and handled before buying so eve-rything we have in store is hand picked.

“People often assume it’s cheaper to buy online

and it’s not always the case, i’ve found

that I can compete quite easily, and in some cases you could be buying products which may have been sitting in warehouses for

10 years or more, the quality differ-

ence is huge. Buying here we can guarantee

quality, new gear.”David is also a guitarist and

teacher who works for the Music Trust, teaching guitar making him a familiar face around town.

So if you are looking to buy your first instrument, need some advice or just need some new strings pop into Sussex Soundhouse.

The shop is located at Unit 1, Blatchford Close, Horsham, West Sussex RH13 5RG. Call 01403 588124 for more information or find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sxsoundhouse or on Twitter @Sus-sexSoundhous.

Crickmay Chartered Surveyors are delighted to announce that Jona-than Mack of their Agency team has, after seven years’ hard work, qualified as a fully-fledged Char-tered Surveyor.

Having decided against going to university on a permanent basis in order to gain experience, Jonathan has achieved this whilst working full-time, firstly in Crawley and for the last three years at Crickmay’s Horsham office.

Director Adam Walker said: “We are immensely proud of Jonathan passing his APC and qualifying as a Chartered Surveyor. He is a valued member of the team and we appre-ciate his effort and determination, which has clearly paid off. Crick-may has a long history of oversee-ing graduate surveyors through to qualification and are proud to boast

a 100 per cent success rate to date.”After spending all his free time

studying for the last few months, Jonathan is now looking forward to having a social life again.

He commented: “After seven years of self-taught learning over evenings and weekends, I am de-

lighted to have finally achieved my career aspiration of becoming a Chartered Surveyor. I am very ex-cited to have a globally recognised qualification which will ultimate-ly help me to assist my clients at Crickmay.”

After an extensive refurbishment, Billingshurst Post Office is now open offering an improved and exciting shopping experience for the village.

In response to customer feed-back, the Post Office has expanded their product range to include more toys, party products, and to intro-duce home and hardware products at unbeatable prices.

Existing ranges such as stationery, gifts, cards and haberdashery will remain and in some cases extended.

Staff are on hand to help and if there is something you cannot see, they are more than happy to try and obtain it for you.

One of the major improvements is the increase in space in the shop making it more accessible for cus-tomers with pushchairs and cus-tomers with mobility problems.

The Post Office will continue to offer a wide range of services com-

prising of bill payments which in-cludes car tax, cash withdrawals, financial products, travel related products such as travel insurance, foreign currency and a passport checking service and of course postage.

The team at Billingshurst would like to thank all their customers for their continued support and would welcome new customers to come and see what the shop has to offer. This venture represents an invest-ment to encourage people to shop locally and enable Billingshurst to remain a vibrant and thriving com-munity.

The team look forward to seeing you soon.

Whether you are selling your home or a property you are letting, bring-ing your property to the attention of investor landlords is a great way to tap into a valuable hidden mar-ket.

Many sellers, and agents for that matter, overlook the fact that there are a large number of potential buy-to-let investors out there waiting for the right investment oppor-tunity to come along but who are not necessarily actively looking on Rightmove or other portals.

Some are looking for their first buy-to-let investment, others for another property to add to their portfolio. By bringing your property to their attention as a possible buy-

to-let opportunity, you can access a whole new market.

The first step is to find out from a local agent like Leaders Limited - experienced in both lettings and sales - what the rental value of your property is and the potential yield based on its sales value. If it has a yield of 4 per cent or more and is in an area where rental demand is strong, it is likely to appeal to an in-vestor buyer.

As an agent with a strong focus on letting, we have an extensive database of investor landlords who have expressed an interest in re-ceiving details of properties with good rental potential. Many of these investors are not actively looking on property portals, agent’s websites or in the local press, but if a prop-erty with the right investment po-tential is brought to their attention, they are usually keen to explore the opportunity.

With the sales market having picked up significantly in recent years, there are a number of people who became ‘accidental’ landlords a few years ago who are now consid-ering selling up but may be worried that selling a tenanted property will be problematic.

However, having a tenant in situ is an advantage if you are targeting your property to investor buyers. Buying a tenanted property means they will receive rent from the day of completion and will not have the hassle and expense of having to find a tenant themselves. This is also an ideal solution for you as you won’t have to serve notice on your tenant or suffer any loss of rent while your sale is proceeding. If you are an ac-cidental landlord, you may be pleas-antly surprised to discover how much your property has increased in value over the last few years and how many investors are interested in buying a property just like yours.

To find out if your property is suitable for the investor market and for trustworthy advice on all aspects of selling, buying, renting or letting in Horsham and the surrounding area, please contact 01403 217585 or www.leaders.co.uk.

Tapping into a valuable hidden market for sellers

Horsham artist, Steve Cobb, has fi ve of his original paintings on sale in Horsham’s Art Ache Gal-lery above Rachel’s Kitchen in the Carfax.

Known locally as a photographer for the West Sussex County Times based in Horsham, Steve was with the paper for nearly thirty years.

Steve said: “The future now sees me taking a new creative direction. My life as an artist began in earnest last December when I was exhibited in the Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to popular approval. Much encouraged I continued to paint and from the end of November. I am of-fering fi ve framed 20 x 16 original acrylic paintings for sale, for the

fi rst time in Horsham.”The fi ve pictures off ered for sale

from November 22, to January 9, represent a cross-section of Steve’s work over the last year.

Steve said: “I’ve tried diff erent forms of expression, and when fi rst starting a literal representation of what I saw was the ultimate goal. More recently I’ve tried a much looser approach. After all, as a pho-tographer what use do I have for an accurate reproduction of a subject? I could photograph it and be done with it.

“For me, I’ve come to appreci-ate the artist has to enter the pro-cess more explicitly. The picture must convey more than just a copy

of any scene. I want my pictures to convey a mood, my emotional re-sponse to a subject. I want to enter the picture as ‘artist’ and transform the image into a feeling, a physi-cal two-dimensional expression of how I respond to the sub-ject.

Sometimes the picture is simply a delight in a particular colour. But isn’t that just an expression of what I feel too?”

You can see more of Steve’s work on his Facebook page at ‘Steve Cobb Artwork’ or you can follow him on

Twitter @stevecobb.Steve added: “Painting for me is a

pleasure; an escape from tribu-lations in life. It is about

the enjoyment of facing a blank white rectangle and beginning a jour-ney. The process of painting is interac-tive and the paint can take me in directions

I never intended at the outset. But that is in-

deed the pleasure. “The journey, the free-

dom to take a chance and make mistakes. Sometimes the mistakes lead to something better than I had ever intended.”

Calling all artists! Win a disco for your school courtesy of children’s entertainer Tomfoolery, by help-ing him create his advent calendar.

Last year Sussex based enter-tainer Tomfoolery posted a diff er-ent photo each day on his Facebook page on the lead up to Christmas with a diff erent and inventive way of displaying each day’s number.

This year Tom wants to off er schools and community groups the chance to win a disco, just by creating a ‘number’ for the advent calendar.

Tom said: “I’d love to get every-one involved with the Tomfoolery advent calendar by inviting you to come up with a new and exciting way to display one of the advent days (1 - 24).

“Gather all your friends, get your class at school to rally together, your youth club, Rainbows, Brown-ies, Beavers, Cubs whoever! Think art attack! Think big! Think small! Think clever! Think silly! I’m off er-ing a free Tomfoolery school party/disco for your end of year party be-

fore the summer holidays! So get thinking and win it for everyone!”

He added: “Good luck and get creative!”

Entries must be sent via private message at Facebook.com/tomfool-

eryuk, not posted to the page.Any entry could be used in the cal-

endar during December, and the com-petition will remain open right up to December 24, with the winner being announced late on Christmas Eve.

Horsham School of Dance (HSD) is proud to be following its per-formances of ‘Simply Dance’ at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham in July this year with a performance in the West End at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, on Sunday, De-cember 21.

A group of these young dancers will also once again be performing in this year’s pantomime ‘Cinder-ella’ at the Capitol Theatre.

The school holds exams in ballet, modern, tap and jazz each term, and students from fi ve year olds to 17 year olds have achieved outstand-ing results. HSD is one of the most established schools in the area, and has been in existence for over sev-enty years.

Past students have gone on to a variety of dance colleges, and also into the dance profession.

Georgia Howlett (pictured back row extreme left) received the news earlier this year that she had been accepted as a Senior Associate at the Royal Ballet School, Covent Garden. HSD have said that it is all very proud of her success.

Horsham dancers head to the West End

The students who will be performing at Her Majesty’s

Theatre in the West End When the London Oratory School’s new lifesize bronze sculpture of Jesus and his

mother, Mary, was blessed by Bishop John Sherrington this week, it was the cul-mination of an in-novative project by the Sussex-based sculptor, Hannah Stewart.

The award-winning artist was chosen to realise the creative vision of head teacher Da-vid McFadden, who commissioned the stun-ning piece to mark the school’s 150 year anniversary.

The sculpture, simply entitled ‘Mary and Jesus Mother and Son’ takes pride of place in a newlyfi nished atrium in the heart of the school. Unusually, the statue depicts Jesus not as an infant, nor an adult, but rather a boy similar in age to those attend-ing the school. McFadden had a clear vision of what the sculpture should convey.

The sculpture, which speaks

about the unique relationship between mothers and sons, was commissioned by the school in recognition of 150 years of pa-rental support.

“It was a great pleasure to work with someone who cared

so much about the fi -nal sculpture and its

contribution to the school’s daily life and community. The fi nal design and composition owed much to Da-vid’s clarity and

vision and I’m de-lighted to see it at the

heart of the school,” said Hannah.

Sussex residents will already be familiar with Hannah’s work which includes Horsham Park’s St Leonard’s Forest Dragon, and The Southwater Iguanodon. Hannah produces fi ne art bronze for public and private commis-sion.

Her clients include Tesco, Hor-sham District Council, Christ’s Hospital, and Cuckfi eld Parish Council. For more information, visit www.hannahstewartsculp-ture.co.uk.

Father Christmas arrived in style this year thanks to Metrobus to open the South-water Christmas Festival on Saturday, November 29.

He had a little help from his elves, Dandini played by Olly Pike from the Horsham panto-mime Cinderella and Peppa Pig.

Southwater Junior Academy Year 6 choir welcomed Father Christmas into Lintot Square by performing on the main stage.

Over 300 children visited Fa-ther Christmas in his grotto in Beeson House, and judging by all the happy faces it could be said that they all loved the gifts and balloons.

Outside in Lintot Square on the main stage, sponsored by Shin-gadias Londis Southwater, there were performances throughout the day from Southwater Jun-ior Academy Year 6 Choir, K.D.F Academy of Dance and Fitness, Forbidden Harmonies, Horsham Rock Choir, Divas Undaunted, The Elsden School of Dancing, JunkYard Sons, Jodie Munday and Chris Andre.

Then came the big event with Father Christmas and Chris An-dre switching on the Southwa-ter Christmas lights. Everyone gathered around the Christmas tree to sing carols, accompa-nied by Horsham Youth Concert Band, with the singing was led by Reverend Kath Jones of Southwater Community Meth-odist Church and Reverend Kesari Godfrey of the Church of the Holy Innocents Southwater.

After the car-ols there was then a very special perfor-mance from Concept who are a fi ve piece boy band from Basingstoke who really got the crowd going with a great per-formance.

Concept have seen success recently when they reached the judges houses stage of this year’s X Factor competition, and only narrowly missed out on a place on the live shows But

Louis Walsh’s loss was South-water’s gain and there were a lot of screaming fans who were very pleased to meet the band after their performance.

Shayler’s Children’s Fun Fair was back by popular demand,

and provided some fantas-tic entertainment and

rides for the whole family.

There were a variety of stalls which were lo-cated in the main car park off ering Christmas gifts,

food and refresh-ment.The whole event was

compered by Southwater Youth worker Angie Choat.

This is the ninth year that Southwater Parish Council and partners have organised this Christmas event. Chairman Peter Buckley said “It was fan-tastic to see so many people at this year’s event. We were very lucky to have such great weath-er and the quality of entertain-

ment, attractions and stalls were the best ever.”

A huge thank you to South-water Parish Council, Southwa-ter Sports Club and Angie Choat who collectively organised the event, and an even bigger thank you to all the volunteers, per-formers, stall holders, retail units, Shayers Entertainment for their fantastic fun fair, High-gain event services for the stage, sound and lighting, The Capital Horsham for providing Dandini and Bohannas Entertainments for providing Pepper Pig.

Merry Christmas from every-one in Southwater!

Southwater Christmas Fes-tival was sponsored by, Shin-gadias Londis Southwater, Metrobus, Zurich Insurance plc, Horsham Publications, Round-stone Caravans, Feisty Fox Ltd, Ashbridge Builders Ltd, Wilbar Associates Ltd, Highgain Event Services, The District Post, Play Innovation, Blachere Illumina-tions, MSA, The Capitol Hor-sham.

The origins of Billingshurst are ob-scure.

There is some archaeological evidence (fl int tools dating back 6,000 years) for early settlement or for people hunting in the woodland that covered this area, but it is not until after the Roman conquest of 45AD that anything more than super-fi cial evidence can be found.

The Romans built a series of roads in order to move troops and to control the surrounding land. Later they became major trade routes. Billingshurst is built on either side of Stane Street, the Lon-don to Chichester road, both major Ro-man settlements.

However, the nearest Roman settle-ments at this time were Alfoldean, to the north, and Hardham at Pulborough, to the south. The settlement would have been made up of small scattered farms owned by manors in the south of Sussex.

By 1100, a church was built on a spur of land, acting as a focus for the scattered farm communications. It is at about this time that the parish of Billingshurst came into existence.

Owing to the economic pull of Hor-sham (a village 9 miles to the north that

was made a Borough and a market place in the 13th Century) it was unlikely that Billingshurst would be anything other than a small village servicing the needs of the local farming community.

Its presence on Stane Street did give it one advantage though as it was on a main communications and trade route. Farms established in the 13th century such as Daulkes, Hammonds, Mar-ringdean, Newbridge, Oakhurst, Gil-mans and Gingers would have used the village as a meeting point and religious centre.

In the 13th century there is documen-tary evidence for the existence of ‘Bell-ingeshurst’.

How the parish got its name is uncer-tain. Hurst means a woodland clearing but the identity of Bellinge is unknown.

By the late middle ages a number of foreigners speaking in a ‘Frenchise’ ac-cent would have wandered around the streets of Billingshurst.

These were the French glaziers who set up what is known as the Wealden Glass industry, exploiting the woodland for materials. The industry was short-lived dying out around 1620.

By the 18th century Billingshurst had grown large enough to start being a centre of trade but in the 19th century Billingshurst was on the main London – south coast road because of Stane Street.

In 1796, the Wey navigation went as far as Newbridge and in 1816 the Wey and

Arun canal was opened, which put Bill-ingshurst on the only inland water route from London to the south coast.

In 1823, William Cobbett wrote in ‘Ru-ral Rides’, “Soon after quitting Billing-shurst I crossed the river Arun, which has a canal running along side it. At this there are large timber and coal yards and kilns for lime.

This appears to be a grand receiving and distributing place”. During his visit to Billingshurst he had said it was, “A very pretty village” where he had, “A very nice breakfast in a very neat parlour of a very decent public house”.

By 1859, Billingshurst was on the main London-south coast rail route. These lines of communication were the rea-

son for Billingshurst`s expansion and changing nature.

In 1837 a local resident would werite “A four horse coach from Worthing to London came through the village and changed horses at the King’s Arms eve-ryday.

Vans went to and from London by road for groceries etc. Coal, fl int and all heavy goods came by barge on the canal to New Bridge”.

By late 20th century new housing es-tates sprang up and Billingshurst has become a minor industrial area in its own right.

Despite the rapid expansion of Bill-ingshurst and its changing nature, it still retains the feel of a large rural village.

Saturday November 29 - Wom-en’s Conference East LeagueIpswich Ladies 2 - 1 Horsham Ladies

Earlier in the season Horsham drew with Ipswich and had high hopes of bringing back points from the return fi xture but a strong op-position second half performance left Horsham empty handed.

At the half way stage of the season East Grinstead are runaway leaders, Horsham remaining eighth, now just one point ahead of Ipswich with Bedford bottom, three points adrift.

At Ipswich the hosts went ahead after 15 minutes with a breakaway goal against the run of play, but with Fran Crossley diving at the far post Steph Baggett equalised a quarter of an hour later. Ipswich dominated the second half, closing down the game with a 60 minute winner.

Horsham captain Hannah Simp-son told us: “This was a disappoint-ing result - we had most of the fi rst half possession and created oppor-tunities, but couldn’t score. They were the better side after the inter-val. We now go into our Christmas and New Year break with time to refl ect and work on some diff er-ent strategies. We return to league action on February 7, meanwhile we’ve got a home Sussex Cup game

on December 13 before, back in Di-vision 1, and we’re in the national indoor competition at Nottingham over two weekends in January.”

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Horsham kept up their winning home record, staying second in the table one point behind Henley and one above Banbury (who put 10 goals past Marlow).

Club captain Nick Kimberley said: “Eastbourne came at us hard from the off . Keeping the ball well and putting us under pressure.” But, Horsham defended staunchly – only two other teams have conceded less goals – and Eastbourne were unable to score.

Horsham took the lead when John Burroughs was in pole position to knock in the rebound from a short corner and, after 35 minutes, Jack Dean scored his eighth goal of the season, putting Horsham two nil

up at the break. The second half, punctuated with lengthy stoppages, ended in stalemate, enabling Hor-sham to garner three more points. The umpires were assessed at Hor-sham’s previous two games and this week they were being coached, leading to over-zealous decisions – epitomised by a player being sent off because of an accidental col-lision. But, when two opponents grabbed and fl oored a Horsham player nobody left the fi eld.

Team captain Duncan Howarth told us: “We weathered the storm, slowing them down and keep-ing a clean sheet. We could easily have gone a goal behind early on but showed great maturity to hold them at bay. The second half was a bit scrappy and not very entertain-ing but they are a better team than their league position (ninth) sug-gests.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Hor-sham travel to eighth in the league Marlow, who scored fi ve last week but lost heavily.

Horsham Hawks U14 hosted high fl ying Henfi eld Heat in an eagerly anticipated clash at Tanbridge.

Hawks opened with Maya Le Rossignol, Millie Lea Clayton, Jamie Miller, James Maclean and Kieran Lee. The opening minutes were low scoring for both teams with Lee and Maclean opening their accounts as Heat took an early 6-5 lead. Hawks conceded too many turnovers allowing Heat to extend their lead to 19-6 with 2 minutes of Q1 remaining.

However Hawks clawed their way back to 19-12 with scores from Michail Manthios, Maclean, Joe Kershaw and Josh Raby.

This positive momentum con-tinued into Q2 with excellent defence from Hawks trio of girls and better execution leading to baskets for Lee, Miller and back to back lay-ups for Amber Hutchin-son who was returning from in-jury, reducing the lead to only 6 points with 3 minutes of Q2 to go. In the last 3 minutes of the half Hawks self destructed with some poor play allowing their visitors a 14 zip run and eff ectively game over at the half 39-21 down.

Q3 continued in the same vain as Henfi eld dominated with Ma-clean the sole scorer although a

change late in the period to full court defence from Hawks did have a positive eff ect.

The start of Q4 was a revela-tion as Hawks scored at will after much better quality play forcing Heat to foul on a regular basis to try to stem the fl ow of points.

At the end, in a match that the

score did not refl ect some good Hawks play, Heat ran out 86-44 winners.

Hawks scorers: James Maclean -13, Kieran Lee -11, Michail Man-thios – 6, Josh Raby 5, Amber Hutchinson - 4, Joe Kershaw – 4, Jamie Miller – 1, Millie Lea Clay-ton, Maya Le Rossignol.

The last in the Sussex Grand Prix series of races, the Crowborough 10K, took place last Sunday. This is a demanding two-lap course, each lap including a fast, mile-long downhill followed by a gru-elling mile-long uphill. Despite this, Horsham Joggers come back for more every year to this well-organised race and this year had a total of 21 runners. First Hor-sham Jogger home was Neil Bon-iface, who fi nished third overall in a time of 33 mins 34 secs, fol-lowed by Bryan Camfi eld in 42:15.

The 2014 Harvey Curtis Sus-sex Road Race Challenge prizes were awarded on Sunday follow-ing the Crowborough 10k race. The 2014 series consisted of four premier Sussex races - Chiches-ter 10k, Bexhill 5k, Barns Green Half Marathon and Brighton 10k, with runners needing to complete three out of the four races, and is hotly contested by the best run-ners in Sussex.

Before the Brighton 10k, two weeks ago, Horsham Joggers’ Neil Boniface had accrued a one point lead, but Brighton and Hove AC’s

Kevin Rojas managed to fi nish one point ahead of Neil at Bright-on giving both athletes an equal seven points. The fi nal position was decided by overall head to head fi nish positions in each race, giving Rojas fi rst overall and Neil Boniface second place. Local run-ner Max Dumbrell fi nished fourth and Horsham Joggers’ Mark Greet achieved a qualifying 15th place.

In the team prizes, 2nd place was hotly contested between Horsham Joggers (last year’s win-ner), Haywards Heath Harriers and Arena 80 AC who all scored 10 points. Horsham Joggers secured

second place, decided once again by the head to head system, Lewes AC took fi rst place.

The Jigsaw Run 10K is a fast, two-lap course in Dunsfold Park, home of BBC Top Gear and site of the Jigsaw School. All entry fees from the event went to the Jigsaw School, which is an independ-ent day school for children and young people with autism. Fif-teen Horsham Joggers completed the course on Sunday with Mark Greet winning the overall race in 35 mins 46 secs and Matthew An-stee-Brown coming third overall in 36 mins 23 secs.

Horsham Gymnastics Centre has added ten more South East Re-gional Champions to the fi ve win-ners from last week’s competi-tion.

On the second weekend of the South East Regional Champion-ships, held in Tunbridge Wells, Horsham were again victorious at the higher level of the competition.

In the morning session Men’s Grade 3 Pair Dominic Smith and Jackson Laing became the new Re-gional Champions and Benjamin Ratcliff e and Madeleine Kent are the new Grade 5 Mixed Pair Regional Champions.

Following the success in the morning Myla Kettel, Matilda Tester and Pheobe Rochead took the crown as Grade 5 Regional Champions in the Women’s Groups and then at the highest level of Grade 6 Emily Steere, Zoe Schubert and Natalie O’Hara saw off all the competition to become the new South East Re-

gional Champions.Head Coach of Acro at Horsham

Gymnastics Centre, Ali Harmer, said “this is a tremendous achieve-ment for the squad which now has 15 South East Regional Champions adding to the squads’ previous vic-tories as Sussex Champions earlier this year. The gymnast performed superbly and we now move onto training for the National Qualifi -ers in February 2015. The support and dedication shown by the gym-nasts, their parents and the team of coaches is refl ected in their suc-cess.”

CricketMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Details of Sussex matches at next year’s Cricketfi eld Road festival have just been announced and Horsham have been rewarded with two plum fi xtures.

On Sunday July 19 Nottingham-shire come for a 4 day Division One LV=County Championship match and on the following Sunday (July 26) Lancashire are the visitors for the opening game in Sussex’s Royal London One-Day Cup 50 over campaign.

H o r s h a m Cricket Club’s Festival organ-iser Barry Peay told the District Post: “We’re ab-solutely delighted to have two such outstanding fi xtures, especially after last year’s doubts whether the festival would go ahead because of diffi culties in obtaining adequate sponsorship. The 2014 festival was a great suc-cess, both on the fi eld and fi nan-cially and we’re hoping to resurrect our previous rolling three year plan

with Sussex to guarantee continu-ance of the festival, which means so much to the club.”

This year’s county pitches at Hor-sham were roundly praised by um-pires and players alike, winning groundsman Jim Askew a richly de-served commendation at last Fri-day’s awards ceremony at Worcester.

At the 2014 festival Notts beat Sussex in the one-day cup, going on

to win their group and fi nish-ing just one spot below

third placed Sussex in the LV= champi-

onship Division 1 table. Lancashire were relegated to Division 2 in the champi-onship but are a strong one day side, get-

ting through to the T20 fi nal.

They last appeared at Horsham in 1994

when Sussex beat them in the four day game, Frank-

lyn Stephenson dominating with bat and ball before Michael Ather-ton’s unbeaten century saw Lancs win the one-dayer.

Sussex Chairman Jim May says: “We have exciting fi xtures and Sus-sex are one of the few counties that

hosts out-ground cricket and it re-mains vital that local residents and businesses support our festivals to ensure that we are able to continue playing at Horsham and Arundel.” Sussex’s T20 game at Hove two days before the start of the Hor-sham festival will create a logistical challenge, necessitating a rapid late transfer of boundary boards, chairs and other equipment to Cricketfi eld Road. And, having county cricket at the club on two consecutive week-ends will entail the arrangement of Horsham team fi xtures elsewhere, but the club will happily overcome such tests in exchange for the re-turn of the much loved festival. The club are now actively seeking the support of local companies to pro-mote their businesses at the fes-tival, helping to secure the future of the major event in the Sussex sporting calendar.

Excellent fi xtures for Horsham’s 2015 festival

Horsham Sparrows FC Under 9 – Sparrows U9 took an

early 2 goal lead, with some fi ne passing between the attackers. At half-time, it was 2-2 and despite taking the lead again in the second half the team were narrowly beaten 4-3. It was a well-matched game and the team bounced back to win the second match 0-4.

Under 10 – An away fi xture to Mole Valley Raiders saw the team lose narrowly on a very muddy pitch. Despite having much of the play they could not score and the home team ran out 0-1 winners. The second game fi nished 4-1 to Horsham Sparrows with outstand-ing performances from Cerys, Thomas & Harvey.

Under 13 Girls – In what was al-ways going to be tough fi xture against Mile Oak, the team held their opponents to 0-0 at halftime. Despite fi elding a new formation the game ended up 4-0 to Mile Oak. Mel and Becca were excellent in the fi rst half and Ellie and Alice played well in the second half but girl of the game was Emily.

Under 15 Girls – With just 10 play-ers the team still recorded a great 5-2 win at Seahaven Harriers. A hat trick from Fliss L plus goals each from Lily K and Jasmine Y capped off a great team eff ort from all the girls.

Henfi eld 6 – 0 Roff ey Robins Athletic U15 Div C

Robins made a steady start away to league leaders Henfi eld, a side that have a 100% league record. Nick Cranston and Joe Mapait worked hard in defence to keep the home side at bay. However, two contentious penalty decisions, both converted by Joe Clarke gave Hen-fi eld a 2 goal half-time lead. Robins continued to battle after the break and put together the occasional at-tacking move but two more goals by Joe Clarke, and a brace from Callum Church completed the scoring.Cranleigh Casuals U11 0 - 2 Chesworth Rovers U11

Chesworth Rovers U11 hit the road again this week, looking to get over last week’s defeat. Cranleigh had the best of the fi rst half with Chesworth keeper Leo playing su-perbly, his double save late in the half kept the score at 0 - 0. In the second half Toby showed why he is Chesworth’s top scorer as he turned and smashed the ball home from outside the box for 0 - 1. Tom then doubled the lead when Leo’s goal kick was headed on for Tom to run onto and score.

The second game saw Cranleigh take a 2 - 0 lead but Callum and then Ben scored to level the match at 2 - 2.

Saturday November 29 - Sussex County League Div 1Broadbridge Heath 1 - 1 Chich-ester City

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

In an entertaining game for the supporters that had plenty of good football but few chances, victory was snatched from Heath by an equalizing goal in the fourth min-ute of added time.

The visitors started brightly and had the early pressure but Steve Painters side took the lead on 17 minutes. Merv Bhujun got on the end of an Ollie Moore through ball and went on to beat the Chichester keeper Anthony Ender with a low shot into the bottom left corner for the only goal of the half.

Again the early pressure in the second period came from Chich-ester City, Michael Frangou being denied by Heath keeper Fisher. At the other end Ollie Moore got on the end of a Bevan cross but his close range eff ort bounced twice on the

crossbar before going over. With time running out the visi-

tor’s pushed everyone forward in search of an equaliser and just when it looked like Heath would hold on to the victory the visitors were awarded a late free kick. The ball was fl oated into the far post and turned back into the middle where Chichester centre-forward Graham Bush scored from close range.

Next week Painter hopes that At-twater and McDermott will be fi t enough to start the game, Godfrey and Waddingham will be back, Andy Howard hopes to start training soon and last season’s top scorer Tiago Andrade is expecting to get the all clear to play in the next couple of weeks. Painter is also hoping to bring in one or two new players to freshen things up. The bad news is that Kieron Purkis and Danny Mos-by both need operations and are un-likely to feature again this season.

Heath Team: Fisher, Bevan, Alfi -eri (Legrange 17) (McDermott 85), Carruthers, Flack, Balfour, Wick-ing (Attwater 80), Bhujun, McNab, Moore, Sultan.

Tuesday December 2 – Ryman League Division One SouthHorsham 1 – 2 Walton Casuals

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

After two heavy cup defeats the Hornets attentions returned to league survival on Tuesday even-ing when the only team below them in the table visited Goring’s Mead.

In what coach Ian Varley, and everyone else who has an interest in the fortunes of Horsham FC, felt was a ‘must win game’ the frailties shown throughout the season were again evident in this poor showing.

The Hornets now fi nd themselves level on points at the foot of the ta-ble with Walton Casuals and eight points adrift of third bottom East Grinstead Town. Horsham do have games in hand, fi ve over East Grin-stead, but playing as they are then wins on the board count far greater than the possibility of picking up points from these matches.

Despite spending the previous couple of days in bed sick with a vi-

rus Gary Charman put himself in the starting line up, showing the im-portance of the game and perhaps the lack of options in the squad.

In a goalless fi rst half both sides swapped the odd half chances, Charman coming close to scoring on a number of occasions and ex Hornets Gabriel Odunaike and Billy Dunn causing problems at the other end, but neither team managed to break the deadlock.

However with just six minutes played of the second period Horsh-am found themselves a goal down, and as with so many goals conceded this season it came from a hopeful long ball that caught the defence napping; Luke Medley latched onto it and picked out Odunaike who slotted past Williams.

Chances were again traded be-tween the teams but another poor goal with ten minutes to go sealed the Hornets fate. Substitute Harry Smith made a good run into the Casuals area but lost the ball on the 18 yard line from where the visitors broke quickly through Dunn who put Odunaike clear from where the ex Hornet scored his and his teams

second of the night. When, with a minute remain-

ing, Casuals keeper Ramos brought down Tony Nwachukwu to earn himself a red card and the Hornets a penalty, converted by Nwachukwu, the chance of salvaging a point be-came a distinct possibility. However despite six minutes of injury time in which ten man Casuals played with midfi elder Scott Day in goal, Hor-sham failed to score and the match ended in an extremely costly and disappointing defeat.

Tomorrow, Saturday December 6, Horsham travel to high fl ying Bur-gess Hill Town who beat them 5-1 in the cup two weeks ago. Hopefully another Hornets trait of this season, inconsistency, will see Horsham take three points from this home banker. Points need to be gathered soon and from the top sides as well as those around them at the foot of the table.

Horsham lose relegation ‘must win game’

Sunday November 30 - FA Tro-phy 3rd Qualifying RoundHayes & Yeading 6 - 0 Horsham

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Although the old cliché of ‘at least we can concentrate on the league’ is very true of the Hornets cup exit at Hayes & Yeading last Sunday the nature of the defeat will do little to boost confi dence for the fi ght to avoid relegation that has now be-come the clubs main objective for the season.

The hosts themselves have strug-gled of late, admittedly at a higher level, having only managed a goal a game average from their previous eight matches. The ease therefore

that they showed in breaching the Horsham back line, aided by some awful defending and basic errors, will cause concern.

Gary Charman could not play due to illness but Lewis Hamilton, Bil-ly-Joe King, Tony Nwachukwu and Samir Hadi were available and all four started.

From the off the gulf in class showed and it took some desper-ate challenges and a couple of good stops from Williams to prevent the hosts taking a very early lead. With 22 minutes gone however the pres-sure told and captain Matty Harriott gave Williams no chance with a shot into the bottom corner of the Hor-nets net.

A defensive calamity by King, who sliced an attempted clearance

against his own post allowing Pat Cox to hammer home the loose ball, gifted the home side the second.

Right on the stroke of half time Southend United loanee Isaac Layne benefi ted when a cross eluded the Horsham defence before hitting King gifting Layne the opportunity to lash the ball home for a 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half continued much the same with Hayes on the front foot and Horsham hanging on. The errors continued to be a problem for Horsham, Hamilton guilty of pre-senting Layne with another chance and then Cox was allowed to run unchallenged deep into the Hor-sham half where he set up Spence with ease, who hit his sides forth goal past Williams.

Napper went off injured with a bad cut to the face and the game alarmingly continued to pro-duce unforced errors from Horsham players. Hamilton this time made a poor at-tempt to clear and instead only set up Layne for his second and his team’s fi fth.

In stoppage time the rout was completed when in-explicably Horsham gave away possession from their throw in, allow-ing Beadle to score and cap a miser-able day for Horsham.

Despite the poor result and per-

formance the travelling Hornets fans sang throughout and stayed

to cheer at the end, resulting in praise for their support

from Horsham players on Twitter.

It will need all this support and more in the com-ing weeks to help the Hornets es-cape the unthink-able fate of rel-

egation.Horsham Team:

Saturday November 29 - Sussex County League Div 1Littlehampton Town 3 – 2 Hor-sham YMCA

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA’s return to Divi-sion 1 action ended in defeat, af-ter they were narrowly beaten 3-2 away at second placed Littlehamp-ton Town last Saturday.

YM youngster Josh Brown can-celled out Keiron Pamment’s opener for the hosts to send the sides into the break all square. Pamment dou-bled his tally for the afternoon two minutes after the restart, but Dave Brown drew the visitors back level with a quarter of the game to play.

After twice coming from behind, Peter Buckland’s side were deserv-ing of a point from the fi xture, but Golds’ wide man Josh Clack ensured they’d leave the south coast with nothing, as he netted the eventual winner fi fteen minutes from time.

YM boss Buckland commented:

“Littlehampton are always going to stretch you with the way they play the game, but I thought that we were the much better team in the second half and thoroughly de-served a point. Their manager said to me that whoever fi nishes above us will win the league, which is a nice compliment, but we’re still go-ing home with nothing.

And despite now trailing league leaders Eastbourne Town by eleven points, the YM boss remains upbeat.

“No one has ever won or lost a league before December. We’ve got to take the result on the chin and go on another six or seven game un-beaten run in the league, and all of a sudden we’ll be straight back up there. There are still a lot of strange results to come yet in the league, believe me, so I’m not counting us out yet. I’m still targeting a top three fi nish.”

YM Team: Lockwood, Carden, Gath-ern (O’Carroll 45), Dugdale, Evans, Gedling, Hunter (Gault 65), D. Brown, J. Brown (Curtis 65), D. Sullivan, Hib-bert. Unused Subs: Crane, Flack.
