BLANKET SUNDAY IS AUGUST 22ND

Yes, here we are in the middle of summer and I want to talk about Blankets+ Sunday.

Blankets+ (formerly called Tools and Blankets) is a special mission opportunity that can involve all ages. Yourcontributions provide the means to transform lives and communities when they are faced with an emergency or simplystruggling to put food on the table. For over 60 years, Church World Service has worked in partnership with localcommunities to identify their needs and access the resources they need to build the foundation for a more viable future, including: blankets, tents, food and other emergency supplies in the wake of a disaster; tools and seeds for refugeesreturning home to replant their fields; wells for families living in drought prone areas to provide clean, safe water to drinkand to irrigate crops and gardens; literacy training and microcredit for women struggling to realize their potential.

CWS Blankets+ ... it’s about blankets and so much more!

The 3 Commandmentrd

Part 4Exodus 20:7

The third prong of “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God....” It is supposed that, having taken Jehovahfor their God, they would make mention of his name; For thus all people will walk every one in the name of his God; This commandgives a needful caution not to mention it in vain, and it is still as needful as ever. We take God's name in vain, by hypocrisy, making a profession of God's name, but not living up to that profession.

Those that name the name of Christ, but do not depart from iniquity, as that name binds them to do, name it in vain; theirworship is vain (Matt 15:7-9), their oblations are vain (Isa 1:11,13), their religion is vain, James 1:26.

By covenant-breaking; if we make promises to God, binding our souls with those bonds to that which is good, and yetperform not to the Lord our vows, we take his name in vain (Matt 5:33), it is folly, and God has no pleasure in fools (Eccl 5:4), norwill he be mocked, Gal 6:7. If we call ourselves Christian, then we commit ourselves to “be like Christ.”

The Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes the name of God in vain. The sinner may perhaps hold himself guiltless, and think there is no harm in it, and that God will never call him to an account for it. To obviate this suggestion, the threatening isthus expressed, God will not hold him guiltless, as he hopes he will; but more is implied, namely, that God will himself be theavenger of those that take his name in vain, and they will find it a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Sunday Youth Groups 5:15 PM

We Appreciate You!

There have been so many blessings that have been poured out in

our youth ministry at Hillside. After spending countless hours

talking with other youth workers from different churches and

denominations, I am constantly reminded of just how blessed we

are as a youth group. Few churches have the facilities, budget,

fund raising capabilities, youth involvement in worship and

leadership of the church, or student leadership programs that we

do. We also have some of the best behaved teens in the region,

and you should be proud of our teens as I have received many

compliments about how well they have represented themselves

and the church. But the truth, is none of this would be possible

without your continued support of our youth ministry programs. It

was by your support that we were able to fund raise over 75% of

the total per person cost for the mission trip. It was your prayers

that have helped make this summer ministry spectacular. And the

youth group just wants to say thank you and please keep

supporting the future of our church like you do now.

Youth News

Is summer already almost over? It seems like just yesterday the

teens were piling out of school for the summer. But August is still

going to be a very busy month. We have water wars the first week

of August, Youth Sponsors Retreat, Student Leadership Retreat

(YEC), South Central District Back to School Bash at Hillside, and

most importantly we are launching a new Bible study yet to be

named on Monday Nights. This promises to be an exciting new

endeavor which will teach the teens what it means to be a Godly

man or woman in a world that would quickly forget those values.

We will be meeting at two separate homes, one for the guys and

one for the girls. For more information, please contact Pastor Josh.

All Summer Dates

1. August 1-8 - Water Wars! Have you been waiting all summer for

this drenching event? Well, wait no further. Welcome to the week

of Water Wars! Every day all of the teens will be worth points and

one person from our congregation will be worth mega-points. This

is a fun filled event for all youth in the church.

2. Applications for YEC (Student Leadership) are DUE

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 4 ! We will vote for YEC on Sunday,th

August 8 . YEC mandatory retreat for the 2010/2011 YEC teamth

will be August 20-22. For an application form or more information,

see Pastor Josh.

3. August 13-14 - Youth Sponsor Retreat. Are you interested in, or

already working with youth? Would you like to have a retreat that is

just for you, a chance to relax and learn more about working in

youth ministry? Then see Pastor Josh to sign up for this retreat.

4. August 28 - South Central District Back to School Bash, from 6-

10 PM! Come join us as we celebrate going back to school with a

cookout, games, live band, and all your friends. Cost is free for

Hillside Youth, $7 for anyone else.

College/Young Adult News

Are you a College Student, Young Adult, or just simply young at

heart? Do you enjoy darts, ping pong, and a good discussion?

Then you don’t want to miss our exciting College Chat! We will be

meeting every Wednesday night at 8 PM in Room A1 for our

College Chat series. Even though it’s called College Chat, it is

open to all young adults and those that are young at heart. Look

forward to seeing you there. We will provide food and drinks for a

time of fellowship. We will also be doing other fun events designed

specifically for College age students and Young Adults.

to enjoy. Don’t forget that every 1 Thursday of the month we takest

a day trip to some place wondrous and new. Sometimes these

locations are in Wichita, and sometimes they take us outside of

Wichita. This month our Day Trip is on August 5, where we will be

traveling to the Marland Estate in Ponca City, OK, and eating at the

Daily Grind. We’ll leave the church parking lot at 9 AM. You’ll need

$15 for the Estate, and extra money for lunch.

We also want to remind you that on the 3 Thursday of every monthrd

we have a SALT Luncheon where we meet for games, lunch and a

program. The lunch starts at noon with a program to follow, but you

can always come early and enjoy fellowship and games. This

months luncheon is August 19 and features Ken Spurgeon ath

teacher, filmmaker and historian who will talk to us about some

interesting facts of colonial history.

Remember, you may sign up for the SALT Events on the

attendance pads on Sunday mornings, or call the church office and

we’ll be glad to put your name on the list.

DISCIPLES YOUNG ADULT CONFERENCE

Recharting Our Faith

Do our perceptions of the world still work when it comes to the

church, or are we still using outdated “maps” to guide us? Do our

churches’ views on racism, sexism, sexualtiy, politics and culture in

general still have relevance, or do we need to revisit and renew

these topics in order to relate to an ever changing world? All young

adults are invited to come together and discuss these topics and

more at the first ever Disciples Young Adult Conference this Fall in

Las Vegas, NV - the “Capitol of Second Chances.” For more

information contact Tod Iseminger

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Hillside is participating in a School Supply Drive to

support children from low income families at Cloud

Elementary School. Our own Lynda Deck is a teacher

at Cloud and suggests the following items: small

plastic pencil/school supply boxes, expo dry erase

markers, and class sets (25+) of matching cheap solar

calculators. We also can use the usual: backpacks, crayons,

pencils, scissors, markers, folders and paper. Boxes will be located

in the Narthex and by the Courtyard Door until school begins in

August. Please be generous - if we receive too much for Cloud

we’ll be sending supplies to Woodman Elementary, another low

income school with Hillside ties. Christian Social Action Committee

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Steps of Faith”

What is Stewardship? Webster defines it as thecareful and responsible management of something entrustedto ones care.

“Follow Me,” Jesus’ simple command to theApostles and they did. It is the same call made to us in thistime. But how do we do that? We try to live our lives as hedid, the perfect steward. Stewardship is discipleship. It is thecare and use of all of God’s gifts to us and is often expressedin terms of time, talent and treasure. Why? Because theseare the things God has given each of us.

We are all blessed with different God given talents, even some we may not know exist. We find them in ourpersonalities, interests and skills. People skilled in trades orthose with professional abilities are gifted with valuabletalents. Those who interact well with others also haveincredible talents. Sharing personal talents for the work ofGod can be one of the most fulfilling opportunities of alifetime.

Modern society is overwhelmed with material goods. These treasures are gifts and also burdens. Enjoying theluxuries of life is not wrong. However, we should alsoconsider the needs of others. To some, food, housing, medical care and other needs are barely, if even, attainable. There are many uses for charitable giving in support of God’swork on earth.

Time is one of the biggest of God’s gifts. But wedon’t know how much time we have. Our days are dividedinto work, rest and other pursuits. At church, at home, atwork and at play, we are responsible for presenting the faithto this and future generations. How we spend our time canshowcase a faith based road map for those with whom wehave influence on how to lead a Christ centered life.

What to give, time, talent, treasure? The answer isdifferent for all. But our gifts should be based on what wehave been given, what we have decided in our hearts, forGod loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-11.
