Short history of the historical education atthe University of Wrocław

• Summer/autumn 1945 – chairs of history opened and formal, academic education of history began at the Polish University in Wrocław

• 1951 r. - chairs of history united and transformed into Institute of History

• 1959 r. – creation of the Chair of Auxilliary Historical Sciences and Archival Studies

Auxilliary Historical Sciences for historians and archivists– paleography and neography courses with bothanalog and digital, recent photocopies and paleo/neographic tables prepared before may 1945 :

Collection of prof. Leo Santifaller (mostly photocopiesof papal charters and judicial materials 16th-19th c. from Tirol region (Bozen/Bolzano),

Collection of prof. Karol Maleczyński (photocopies of manuscripts and charters of Polish, medieval originprepared for the University of Lviv befor 1939)

Archival studies and didactics

• 1959-1972 – archival studies as one of profiles of professional education at the historical studies for part time students,

• 1972 – archival studies for full time students

• 2006 – archival studies supplements with elements of data/documents menagment

Digitized material for education

For BA students’ education digitized sourcematerial is presented mostly at courses of:

• Historical Auxilliary Sciences (60 hours of seminars),

• BA seminars (medieval – Latin and German paleography, modern – Polish, German, Rus’ paleography)

• Courses in Archival studies (changes incommunication and data preservation)

Students’ projects during paleography and neography courses, BA seminars

After finishing beginners’ level in reading charters and manuscripts (30h) students have to prove their ablity to use their knowledge and competences for research or professional, archival work. They choose a charter or pages from manscripts from collections at web-sites (szukajwarchiwach.pl, monasterium.net), prepare their editions with short information about the specific source material

Students’ projects during MA study

At the MA studies with professionalspecialisation ‘Archival studies and data menagment’ students may use digitizedmaterial during courses

• ‘Historical sources publishing’ (both analog and digital material is allowed and used),

• ‘Archival studies workshops’ – individualprojects or group co-operation, mostly makingorder in virtual collections and preparing themfor – virtual - editions.

Using digitized materials in education - aims

• Making courses more attractive for students

• Get students know how to use open (digital) world of knowledge for improving theirposition on job market

• Arouse a desire to create and share theircreation results with open world (seminars –special projects (gallery of students-during-courses art.), but also wikipedia entries)

Archival studies workshops for students

Examples of projects focused on digitization or Web 2.0 :

• Digitization and preparation for didactics tablesand collections of prof. Leo Santifaller and Karol Maleczyński,

• Working with matrix of monasterium.net and withchoosen collections (virtual editions mostly, for internal use)
