Function of the Digestive System The breakdown of food into small molecules.

Then absorbed into the body for energy.

Major Organs: Oral Cavity

More commonly referred to as the mouth.

This is where the digestion process begins.

Food physically chewed; broken down with saliva.

Mechanical digestion is done by teeth.

Chemical digestion is accomplished with saliva.

Major Organs: Pharynx

More commonly referred to as the throat.

The passageway that connects the mouth and the esophagus.

Major Organs: Esophagus

 Muscular tube where food passes.

Food is passed through the esophagus through peristalsis.

Muscle action that squeezes food through the esophagus.

Major Organs: Stomach

Located at the end of the esophagus.

Breaks down food molecules into smaller molecules.

Molecules eventually absorbed into small intestine,

Major Organs: Small Intestine

Located between stomach and large intestine.

Contains small finger like ridges called villi.

Absorbs nutrients from food into blood stream.

Major Organs: Pancreas

A large gland behind the stomach.

 Produces digestive enzymes and insulin

These “juices” regulate digestion and blood sugar levels

Major Organs: Liver

 Large rounded glandular organ

Located in the abdomen of vertebrates

involved in processing digestive products and neutralizing toxins

Major Organs: Colon

 Also known as Large Intestine.

Absorbs remaining water from indigestible molecules.

Stores and eliminates waste from body.

Major Organs: Rectum

Acts as a temporary storage for waste.

Rectal wall stimulates desire to remove waste matter.

Major Organs: Anus

Opening where non-liquid waste products are released.

Symptoms: burning sensation when urinating, blood in the stool

 Treatments: Medicine

Facts: Affects both male and female.

Facts: UTI affects more women than males.

Disease: Chronic Gastritis Symptoms: Sense of weight after eating

Signs: Sense of weight after eating
