2. Info The digestive system is the series of tube like organs thatconvert our meals into body fuel. In all theres about 30feet (9 meters) of these convoluted pipe works, startingwith the mouth and ending with the anus. Along theway, food is broken down, sorted, and reprocessed beforebeing circulated around the body to nourish and replacecells and supply energy to our muscles. Food on the plateneeds to become a mashed-up, gooey liquid for thedigestive system to be able to split it up into its constituentparts: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Our teeth start the process by chewing and grinding upeach mouthful, while the tongue works it into a ball-shapedbolus for swallowing. 3. Watch and Listen aboutthe body system 4. What is in your body? The digestive system has parts calledesophagus, liver, small intestine, colon, largeintestine, rectum and anus. The rectum is aplace where you hold all your waste. Theanus is where you dispose of your waste. 5. More info Moistening saliva fed into the mouth from nearbyglands starts the process of chemical digestionusing specialized proteins called enzymes.Secreted at various points along the digestivetract, enzymes break down large molecules offood into smaller molecules that the body isable to absorb. Once we swallow, digestionbecomes involuntary. Food passes down thethroat to the esophagus, the first of a successionof hollow organs that transport their contentsthrough muscular contractions known asperistalsis.
