The Meaning of Being a Dalit
Employment and Working conditions• Work as slaves
• No shoes• Cannot leave the job because they
need the pay• Do arduous work such as picking
out and cutting stones• Work in very bad weather
conditions• No days off • Child labor
“Equipped with nothing more sophisticated than a brush and bucket or pieces of cardboard, such groups
have cleaned the toilets of higher-caste people, carrying away the waste, or "nightsoil", in baskets
placed on their heads”
Education• Cannot send children to school • Need more money at home• Have to do what family once did• No future
• Parents still have hope, and wish to send their children to school
Poverty-health conditions• Live on less then a dollar a day• Working conditions can affect
health conditions• Work in sewers• Have no protection towards
infectious diseases• Do not go to the doctor so often• Poor medical literacy
