Chestnuts roasting in an open fire…YES it’s the season to be jolly...for here it is Merry Christmas everybody’s having fun! I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a hot roasted chestnut. It seems very Dickensian to me, as does drinking hot chocolate by the fire and decking the hall with boughs of holly! I wonder what your Advent and Christmas traditions are? I went to a garden centre recently and amongst the trees, snowmen, deer, fat men in red suits, lights and model Victorian villages - I couldn’t find a single traditional nativity set. Talk about forgetting the real meaning behind this most wonderful time of the year! It does make me despair. Jesus Christ came as light, giving hope and a promise of real everlasting joy (unlike the presents we receive which, usually, are forgotten about by New Year). It doesn’t take much in the bleak midwinter to gather at the manger – only humility and repentance. That’s the best gift we can bring to the Christ-Child, the Man-King, theLord Jesus. Chestnuts roasting in an open fire…YES it’s the season to be
jolly...for here it is Merry Christmas everybody’s having fun!
I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a hot roasted chestnut. It
seems very Dickensian to me, as does drinking hot chocolate
by the fire and decking the hall with boughs of holly! I
wonder what your Advent and Christmas traditions are? I
went to a garden centre recently and amongst the trees,
snowmen, deer, fat men in red suits, lights and model
Victorian villages - I couldn’t find a single traditional nativity
set. Talk about forgetting the real meaning behind this most
wonderful time of the year!
It does make me despair. Jesus Christ came as light, giving
hope and a promise of real everlasting joy (unlike the
presents we receive which, usually, are forgotten about by
New Year). It doesn’t take much in the bleak midwinter to
gather at the manger – only humility and repentance. That’s
the best gift we can bring to the Christ-Child, the Man-King,

your part – and this Christmas give Him your heart and
worship Him.

Our minister continues... It’s mind-boggling that God who made the universe became flesh
and lived amongst us. But the prophets foretold it and the blessed
angels greeted it in song when His birth came upon the midnight
clear. Let’s sing that glorious song of old and remind those caught
up in the empty and misleading materialism of it all - that the
wondrous gift of salvation has been given.
May God fill you with all good things this Christmas, enabling you
to serve him to the full in the year to come.
I, and my family, wish you all a Peaceful Christmas and a Happy
New Year!
Love in the Messiah.

FOOD BANK
TWURC are still supporting the food bank. If you
can spare any items, (a list of items needed is available at the door of the church), please can you
place them in the garden storage box in the
corridor. We are also short of carrier bags so if anyone can spare any, please leave them in the garden store or give them to Lesley Jones who will
bring them in to us. Many Thanks
Please note that if you want Nativity Christmas Stamps you MUST ASK for them, otherwise you will be given secular ones. The Royal Mail produce more secular stamps than the Nativity version and only offer the Nativity stamps loose instead of in books. If we want to witness in our community it is important that we ask and use the Nativity stamps, otherwise, in future years, they may disappear completely!
(1Thessalonians 5:16-18). If we‘re too comfortable in our
faith something‘s wrong
therefore daily obedience and
commitment to Jesus are
required.
(1 Timothy 4:7).
It’s all a question about us
becoming genuine believers,
remembering that Jesus knows
our hearts. The other disciples
did not suspect Judas would
betray Jesus, but our Lord knew
that there was no genuine faith
in Judas’s heart. Paul tells us
that we are running a race
(Hebrews 12:1) and speaks of disciplining his body
(1 Corinthians 9:27) and mentions the prize that is
available to all that complete the
race.
(2 Timothy 4:8). Are we burned out - or alive
today in Jesus?
What can give real assurance to
a genuine believer? The first
thing is to have confidence in
Christ for salvation. The
emphasis is on present faith in
Christ. We may have become
disciples twenty or thirty years
ago. We may even have given a
testimony announcing our newly
discovered faith.

Christmas Prayer Dear Lord,
What’s it really all about, this “season of celebration”? People rushing everywhere, overspending, double-booking diaries in frantic attempts to meet the demands of a twenty-first century Christmas. And what about those who find Christmas anything but joyful – those who have lost loved ones, those who are old and alone and tired and longing for it all to be over? What’s it really all about?
Lord, in the middle of the busy-ness and bustle, help us to remember that this is nothing new. Jesus came into a world of rush and frenetic activity. He came to a town so busy that there was no room for his family. And help us to remember that you know what it’s like to have a loved one – your dear Son - away from home at Christmas.
Lord, still our hearts, and open them to recognise and receive your great gift to us. May we make room for Jesus and know the peace and security of his presence this Christmas. Help us to know that this is what it’s really all about.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.

But do we still trust in the Saviour’s grace today? Is our faith as
active now as it was then? The second thing is to live by the Holy
Spirit‘s power, producing His fruit that will ripen by abiding in
Christ in prayer, worship and fellowship.
(Galatians 5:22-23, Matthew 7:18-20).
We should continue to grow in our faith. As new disciples we had
strong confidence in our salvation, but as we mature in Christ we
should have an even greater assurance.
(James 1:2-4). We must apply the cross and not merely observe it. Jesus asked
the rich young man to give proof of his real desire to get into the
Kingdom of Heaven. He failed, because he had a greater love for
his possessions rather than eternal life.
(Mark 10:17-23).
As in previous years you are invited to use the Christmas Card Notice
board at the rear of the Church.
Please pin one card here to give Greetings to all your Church friends
instead of sending individual cards to all. Perhaps you would then like to donate the money you have saved (and more if you can) to our
Christmas Charity.
Envelopes are provided beside the Notice board. Your gifts may be placed in the Offertory on any Sunday.
