It mentions the oldest tree in the park being cut down and insinuates that it is due to the skate park. However, we can confirm that the plans for the skate park were designed specifically to ensure the tree would not need to be removed and we can also confirm that it was a Parish Council member who arranged for it to be removed. The Skate Park committee is not happy that the village is under the impression that we are responsible for the removal of the tree when, in fact, that is completely untrue. Cornwall Councillor - Dominic FairmanFollowing on from my piece in last month's newsletter about the Community Governance Review that is being undertakenby Cornwall Council, I have booked two parish consultation events for early November. The review is looking at a wide range of issues for parish and town councils including the possibility of amalgamatingor creating new parish councils where there is community support.I have long held the opinion that both villages would benefit from the creation of separate parish council for Delaboleand believe that the case for doing so is entirely positive and will deliver advantages to all residents from both villages. The events will be held on the following Saturday afternoons and at the following venues:

Saturday 2nd November 2pm – 6pm: Delabole, St Johns

Saturday 9th November 2pm – 6pm: St Teath, Community Centre

I hope as many residents as possible will be able to spare a few minutes to come and give their views and both eventsare open to residents from both villages. Please come to which ever one is more convenient to you. There will be extraordinary Full Council meeting of Cornwall Council at New County Hall on the 10th December whenall of the various proposals from across Cornwall will be debated and decided and I am using the consultation eventsto gather evidence and opinions from as wide a range of residents as possible. The importance of parish councils in being the closest representatives of residents should never be underestimatedand they are increasingly important in planning decisions and have a pivotal role in developing NeighbourhoodDevelopment Plans. They also deal with a raft of other issues such as footpaths and maintenance of public open spacesand are often the first port of call when community groups need support.Parish Councillors give up their time on a voluntary basis and I believe that having a parish council for each village willmake their workload much more manageable and avoid any possible conflicts of interest when dealing with the publicpurse.I will welcome all opinions and hope that you can find time to talk over the issue and give your views.Dominic FairmanCornwall Councillor - St Teath, St Breward and Delabole07939 122303 - [email protected]

£13.90 is all it costs to feed a child for a whole schoolyear

About 30 people gathered at the Methodist Church whenDelabole hosted a MWiB Cream Tea and Stall to raisemoney for Cornish President Jill Nute’s charity, Mary’sMeals.Introduced by Sue Ede, Jill told us about the start of thecharity (in a shed in Scotland) and how it provides onegood meal to some of the world’s poorest children everyschool day.The charity’s vision is that every child receives one dailymeal in their place of education (so children are gettingfed and educated) and that all those who have more thanthey need, share with those who lack even the most basicthings.

Mary’s Meals is now feeding 1,425,013 children and£13.90 is all it costs to feed a child for a whole

school yearThe afternoon raised £263.00 - which will feed nearly 19children.If you want to find out more, the story’s told in the book‘The Shed that Fed a Million Children’

Scott Mann MPWhen the British people voted in the 2016 referendum, they were asked a simple choice. To remain a member of theEU or leave the EU. The British people by wide majority decided to leave and the government promised to implementtheir decision.More than three years have passed, and we are still a member of the EU despite my best efforts to act upon thereferendum instruction. Our Prime Minister Boris Johnson also made a commitment to the British people, to leave bythe 31st of October this year under any circumstances. The Prime Minister has my full and unwavering support, hebelieves in this country and has made it his priority to ensure North Cornwall’s vote to leave is respected.Boris Johnson has already delivered on his campaign promise to me to ensure a fairer funding formula for NorthCornwall’s school children. I believe he can also deliver on healthcare, infrastructure and post-Brexit funding. While I have the great honour to be the Member of Parliament for North Cornwall, I am also a voter who went to thepolling station along with millions of people to take part in the biggest democratic exercise in British history. I voted toleave the EU in a free and fair referendum and as MP I have consistently carried out North Cornwall’s instruction toleave the EU and vote against any further extensions or measures to delay Brexit. There are people, both inside and outside of Parliament, who do not believe that we should leave the EU. They havenever accepted the result of the 2016 referendum and have even said that people in North Cornwall who voted to leavedid not understand what we were voting for.I strongly disagree and point to the thousands of emails, letters and conversations I have had with constituents over thelast four years who knew exactly why they voted to leave and what they voted for. A small minority of people have alsolobbied for a second Brexit referendum, with the option to remain in the EU. The majority of people who contact mesimply want us to get on with the job of leaving and do not want to return to the issue. In a democracy, we must respect and tolerate each other’s opinions and views. I accept and understand that there arepeople in our constituency who voted to remain and feel that Brexit is the wrong course. Although I disagree with them, their views are just as valid as those of us who voted to leave. As we move forward and out of the EU, I would like to see our communities coming back together and working for thebenefit of everybody who lives and works in North Cornwall. To do this we must respect the 2016 referendum resultand implement its instruction.I will continue to vote in favour of measures which are designed to take us out of the EU on October 31st.

The Poppy Appeal in DelaboleThe Royal British Legion is asking communities across Britain to cometogether, join together and remember together the service and sacrifice, friendship and collaboration of the men and women of the British, theCommonwealth and Allied nations who fought together 75 years ago.

During 1944 victory in three critical battles: Monte Cassino, where 240,000 from 6 nations opened the way to the liberationof Rome, D Day when 13 nations collaborated to land 156,000 men in Normandy and Kohima and Imphal where theBritish, India, Gurkha and Africa troops, along with local tribes, changed the direction of the war in South East Asia andpaved the way to end the war.To mark this, the Delabole Branch will be holding an exhibition and coffee event in the Methodist Church on Saturday9th November from 10 30am until 4.00pm, with raffle and sale of Legion goods. If anyone has items that we could borrowfor the display please bring them along to the chapel on Friday 8th from 2.00-4.30pm or if unable to please contact oneof our members who will arrange collection. All proceeds will be for the Poppy Appeal. On Remembrance Day, Sunday 10th November, a commemoration will be held at the War Memorial at 2.30pm followedby the service at St Johns Church at 3.00pm.On Armistice Day, Monday 11th November, Delabole Primary School will join the village community for a commemorationat 11am at the War Memorial.Geoff Cleave, our president and Poppy Appeal Coordinator has been busy organising the village house to housecollection. Please give generously to our willing band of helpers when they call on you.Members and friends of the Branch spent an enjoyable evening recently at the annual dinner at The Poldark Inn. Manythanks to Tracey, Adrian and the team who looked after us so well. Finally, we would like to invite you to come along to our AGM on Tuesday 19th November at 7pm, followed by a buffetsupper. You will be made most welcomed.Patricia MolloySecretary of The Delabole Branch.

A Big Thank You - from Sue & JohnWe would like to say a very big thank you to all who helped to make our retirement from the Post Office a joyful time. Our 17 years of running the office has flown by due to the laughter and fun all our customers showed us. We were sorrynot to be able to sell the Post Office on, but with all the changes Post Office Ltd have now put in, it was impossible todo so.We were looking forward to selling the property and moving back up to Hampshire so we can be closer to all our families, especially the grandchildren, all 7 of them!. Unfortunately, we have now discovered the house has got Mundic (whichwe did not know about when we bought the house) and the buyer we had has pulled out. We are putting it back on themarket and, fingers crossed, we might be able to sell it.We have enjoyed out time in Delabole and all the friends we have made from coming to the Post Office and when weboth played darts for The Poldark. It is hard to say how many people we have seen over the years, being a small village,we got to know most of what was happening in the village. We used to say that you don’t need Eastenders - we’ve gotit here in real life! With a big thank you to all who contributed to our farewell party; it meant a lot to both of us. Mel, the cake was beautiful, extra thanks to Bob and Ro, Tracy and Adrian at The Poldark for all they did. While we are still here, please drop in for a coffee we would love to have a chat.Thank you all again,John and Sue Feldtman

Christmas Coffee Morning & Pasty LunchHave a look on the calendar and see what you’ve gotplanned for Saturday 30th November between 11amand 2pm and, if there’s nothing happening, why notmake a date to pop along for lunch at the MethodistChurch when there’ll be pasties and desserts on offeras well as Charity stalls. The pictures are from previous years. Not promisingyou’ll be lucky enough to help with the washing up-

but who knows?

Pasty Making

We had a really good time at the Women’s Fellowshipwhen Marion showed us how she makes pasties.Who had requested this demonstration? Well, it wasJo, so she was the lucky ‘student’ under Mar’sinstruction. She took her pasty home and had it for hersupper - delicious! The second one to accept the challenge was Paulineand both acquitted themselves so well that it wassuggested that, although we usually get pasties fromCamelford for our Christmas Coffee and Lunch (Sat30th Nov), this year…

Sue kindlytook this pic!

Christmas HampersWe’re starting to think about Christmas hampers for those inCornwall who are finding life difficult and the thought ofChristmas just one big headache. The hampers, when filledand wrapped, are going to be distributed by the Children’sServices from Cornwall Council’s Bodmin branch. The plan is to fill them with food goodies that will make therecipients’ Christmas happier and more special. So if you’d like to contribute, we’d be pleased to receive anyitems of food or drink at the Tuesday FoodBank collection atthe Methodist Sunday School - see Chapel notices elsewherein ‘Slate’ for dates and times.Things to bear in mind please: Check sell by date OK for Christmas No glass containers No alcohol or tobacco Many thanks

St. Teath Parish Council - Magazine Report for November 2019

Councillors are:Delabole Ward Cllrs. Gary Ellis, Gerald Heard, Pete Homans, Chris Keat, John Richards, Lance Rose, Andrew

Stacey, Nev Turner.St.Teath Ward Roger Lyle (Chairman), Tracey Kingdon (Vice Chairman), Darren French, Will KittoSub Committees Within the Parish Council there are a number of sub committees that assist in the day to day running and

work of the council. These committees enable the administration and projects to move forward betweenmeetings and are able to focus on specific issues. Recommendations can be proposed by sub committeeswho then bring their views back onto the Full Council agenda for a final decision. In certain circumstancesthey can have delegated powers to pursue specific matters.

The PlanningCommittee

The planning committee spend a lot of time considering applications and carry out many site visits. They alsoreport back on matters that are deemed to be non-compliant with the conditions of an approved applicationor raise questions about any form of development where planning has not been obtained, or seek clarificationon permitted development sites. We are happy to investigate any development matters that need reportingor clarification.

CornwallCouncilGovernanceReview

Several councillors along with myself and residents of both villages attended the second stage of theGovernance Review at St. Issey on the 2nd October. The agenda was set whereby parishes within theWadebridge & Padstow Community Network Area, along with St Teath from the Camelford CommunityNetwork had expressed a view in changing their parish. Many wanted to review their parish boundaries, butSt Teath had submitted a form of enquiry to look at splitting the parish and creating two separate parishes forSt Teath and Delabole. The panel will now consider all comments and submissions and produce theirrecommendations later in the year, or early 2020. If the panel decide to move forward with a review for ourparish, a public consultation will be held. This is the first opportunity in over 40 years where parishes canapply to make changes by splitting, joining, changing boundaries, the name of the council or the number ofseats on the council. Both Delabole and St Teath have grown in population over the past four decades andthe needs of the electorate can be different although some things remain the same. There is a lot to considerincluding the advantages or disadvantages of splitting along with the division of assets and the definedboundaries between the two. If you have any queries or questions at this stage please do not hesitate to getin touch.Further information on the Governance Review can be seen on the Cornwall Council websitehttps://www.cornwall.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/elections/community-governance-reviews/information-about-stage-2-of-the-community-governance-review

Litter Please help to keep our parish tidy by using the bins provided or taking your litter home. If you see anyonedropping litter point them in the direction of the nearest bin. Having attended the Cornwall Council trainingevent, as Clerk I can now complete incident cards for littering, fly tipping and dog fouling that with sufficientevidence will be sent to Cornwall Council who will issue a fine on the offender.

Parking /Speeding

These seem to be regular topics at our meetings and we ask that you all be responsible when parking andplease slow down when passing through our villages. The Cornwall Council traffic enforcement is now backand although the time spent in the parish is limited we hope that random visits will help to address the parkingproblems with the issuing of fines. We understand that the number of cars per household has increased overthe years compared to many years ago when not everyone owned a car, but drivers cannot cause anobstruction or park on yellow lines and will hopefully consider where they leave their vehicles so that otherdrivers or emergency vehicles can get through.

Parish Councilwebsite

Councillors have recognised that the current website is not the easiest to access and sometimesinformation is unavailable so they have agreed this will be replaced. Our website designer hasbeen instructed to set up the new site and as soon as this is live the www. address will be publicised. We know that some old sites are still live and these should have been shut down, however this hasnot happened and does cause some confusion. There is nothing the Parish Council can do aboutthis but can assure you that our current site will be removed once the new website is active.

St Teath VillageGreen

The Parish Council have agreed to lift the ban on dogs during organised events on the village green atSt.Teath.This means dogs will be allowed under, the supervision of their owners, to go on the green but mustbe kept under conntrol.

RememberanceSunday

Will, this year, be held on Sunday, 10th November 2019. Please support the commemorations in our villagesto honour and remember those from our parishes that have been killed in conflict whether this be at war or inservice, and for those injured or families that continue to grieve loved ones.

CamelfordLeisure centre

The Parish Council have once again decided to give a donation to the leisure centre that is heavily reliant onsupport from local councils. The centre offers a wide range of recreational facilities for all ages and abilitiesand we are proud to have this service so close to our villages and widely available for our residents

The date of forthcoming Full Council meetings are:-Tuesday 5th November at St. Teath and Tuesday 3rd December 2019(Venue to be confirmed) Meeting start at 7.00pm.

(children’s playtime, in Cornish)

Winter is coming! It’s not actually here yet but the signs are all around – darkevenings and mornings; cold weather, maybe even frost; bare trees and wetand windy weather. There seems to be very little to enjoy outdoors this month, everything seems so dark and dreary and dull. A poet called Thomas Hoodwrote this about November:

No sun – no moon! No morn – no noon - No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! - November!

This poem is saying that November is a month with not much good happening, verylittle to enjoy and be happy about. This is generally true but there will still be sunny, bright days when it will be lovely to dress up warm and run along the beach or throughthe woods. Windy, stormy days will bring ashore treasures like driftwood, sea glassand shells on the beach. In the woods you can find skeleton leaves, toadstools andfeathers. You can also identify any winter visiting birds you may be lucky enough tosee – some will have flown thousands of miles, from the Arctic, to spend the winterhere. Watch out for fieldfares and redwings especially here, they are a sign that colderweather is on its way.If its not good enough to go outside, its fun to sit in the warm indoors, maybe by anopen fire, reading or making a craft activity you enjoy.November is a month for remembering – the summer and autumn that have just gone, and also things from longer ago. We have bonfires and fireworks every year on 5th

November, Bonfire night – to remember Guy Fawkes, who was going to blow upParliament in 1605 (a very long time ago!).

On November 11th, at 11am we remember the sacrifices of everyone who took partin the World Wars, particularly those who died, but also those who were injured orsuffered as a result of their wartime experiences. November is perhaps a month forremembering, and thinking and planning for new activities, rather than lots of doingand being active. Maybe think of something new you want to learn to do and planhow you could achieve it.

Article by Angela Cooper - RectorEnvironmental issues are much in the news at the moment:climate change and plastic pollution being just two of themajor concerns and we are all becoming more aware of thedamage our actions can do to the world’s fragile eco-systems and the positive changes we can make: using lessand more-renewable energy, cutting out single-use plastics, using the car less (note to self here) re-use, reduce, re-cycleetc.You might be surprised to know (because we haven’t beenvery good at it) that ‘To strive to safeguard the integrity ofcreation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth’ is partof the mission of the Church of England and I dare say otherchurches have similar statements. Human beings have aGod-given responsibility to care for his creation and shareits resources, something we all need to take more seriouslyfor the sake of future generations, as our young people arereminding us.But what’s the point, you might think, what difference can Imake? Many years ago in another context, I read this andit has stuck with me: Faced with what seem like a hugeand impossible task we can feel as if we are being askedto empty the ocean with a teaspoon, but at least I cantake-out my bucketful! If you do the same we can start tomake a difference.

Memories of a Farm childhood of 40s and 50sNovember. Maybe a bit of hush with harvest home, potatoes in the store, lambs sold, maybe even a firework or two. So whywas it that, as my sister and I returned for a long half term weekend from Boarding School, it always coincided with calf weaningweek? The problem being that our bedroom on the end of the house had 80 Galloway cows on one side and their calvesthrough the gate on the other side,. Well, one newly calved cow and calf make a heck of a din, imagine trying to sleep with 80of them under your bedroom window! However, after 5 sleepless nights blessed relief as the roaring reduced to a squeakingand the cows turned away up the road to build up strength for their next Spring calving. The calves were then sent away tomarket to winter in a milder climate than windswept TregardockAs winter and the wet progressed, the cows then went away down onto the cliffs where they enjoyed the shelter behind 'TheMountain' on blustery days and spread out over the rough grazing on the fine days. Nowadays no doubt there would becomplaints of muddy footpaths and damage to wildflowers. Funny how the cliffs were always full of Primroses and Bluebellsin Spring and 'Eggs and Bacon', Sea Pinks, Bell Heather and lots of little flowers all Summer. In those days there was theBeach footpath, as now, but also the Donkey Path, The Chain Path and the Upper Donkey Path - all kept clear by the cowsfor use in the Summer . Not a labyrinth of Blackthorn and Gorse as now.November, time of Fireworks and Bonfires. Well Fireworks were an expensive novelty in those days and to this day I have aterror of jumping squibs having, as I believed, been pursued round the Garden by those terrifying jumping devils to hoots oflaughter by the adults. In fact Halloween was more celebrated in our house with dooking for apples, treacle scones and sweetiesand friends calling in for the evening.. No standing around in a draughty field with frozen toes in welly boots waiting for poorold Guy to meet his end.November, time to locate all those pudding basins that had been used for various alternative jobs such as the dogs' water orbeef dripping. Time to fill the kitchen with spicy smells as the Christmas puddings were stirred up with whatever goodies hadbeen hoarded during rationing time. I seem to remember carrots played quite an important part in the ingredients as asweetener! Raisins all had to be de-pipped, suet grated up and so on.There was always a day when my sister and I were confined to the house because 'Mr Mules is coming down'. Afterwardsthe kitchen full of more steam and large pans on the Range as the late Mr Pig was turned into Brawn, that delicious jelly mixof meat pieces. My Father mixing up a black noxious liquid containing salt, black treacle and salt petre which he tipped into abig stone trough on top of the Hams and Bacon to feed us through the winter. Roast Pork and crackling for that Sunday lunchserved with home grown apple sauce, roast potatoes and carrots etc. Most of the food we ate home produced of necessity inthose days and no freezer so all had to be preserved in some way or another. The Farmer's wife did not have an easy life, asno one did in those days of austerity and necessity.November, the month when we remembered the local lads who lost their lives so that we might enjoy our comforts today.Next month happy Christmas memories of long ago. A Methodist Minister’s View

We readily associate the month of November with Remembrance Sunday which this year is on 10th November. Even ifyou do not attend your local Act of Remembrance you will be associated with the day through at least watching therelevant news items on the television. Through the news items we will be reminded that thousands of people in manydiffering situations across the World will be sharing in Remembering the Fallen of the Two World Wars and other conflictssince. The past few years have been particularly significant years as we have been reminded of some of the key battles ofWorld War 1 and its conclusion in 1918. During this year we have had cause to remember the outbreak of World War2 eighty years ago in 1939. This year has also marked the 75th Anniversary of the D. Day Landings in June 1944, oneof the significant events which led to the conclusion of the 2nd World War.Over recent years the French Government has recognised their indebtedness to our British Service personnel and anumber of our veterans have received their highest military award, the Légion d’honneur. This is a reminder to us ofour indebtedness, too, to all who served in those major times of conflict, and those who have served in other conflictssince. In recent weeks we have been to Barnstaple and Exmouth and have been reminded of the cost and consequences ofhuman conflict when we have seen young men with prosthetic limbs going about their everyday business in thesecommunities. A salutary lesson in these contemporary times in which we are sometimes complacent about issues arisingfrom human conflict. The current Sunday night drama series on BBC1 ‘The World on Fire’, which concludes onRemembrance Sunday, raises a number of issues associated with the 2nd World War, and serves as a reminder to usof a range of consequences of human conflict. We may feel sheltered and protected from the consequences of War, butI think that it is good for us to ‘Remember’ the suffering of so many and what it achieved for us, and to continually prayfor World Peace. Many live amidst political and human conflict at this time.It prompts the question ‘What does Remembrance Sunday mean to us?Every Blessing,Bryan Ede

NEWS & INFORMATION FROMTHE DELABOLE SLATE QUARRY

BUSINESS - 2019 started well but alas, our elected parliamentarians decided in their great wisdom, such as it is, thatthe United Kingdom would not leave the European Union as directed by 17.4 million voters in the 2016 referendum on29th March as planned. From this date on, the construction market has stagnated and looks likely to remain that way until our democracy isrestored and votes honoured. However, I am hopeful that we shall leave on 31st October. After which, we expect business to rapidly return to normaland even grow.Hopefully, we will all remember these days when so many of our right honourable members of parliament dismissed ourmajority vote with such disdain and ensure that they are not returned to parliament in the coming general election.PEOPLE AT DELABOLE SLATE – We are recruiting for the followingVACANCYSlate Splitter & Dresser – Experienced person or keen to learn with pay rate according to experience.Pay: up to £339.20 per 40 hr week fully skilled plus pay rise pending.Current hours of work are: 8am – 4.30pm (40 hours per week) Monday-Friday (with ½ hour off for lunch)So if you want to join our Eastern Saw House team making our World renowned hand-made Delabole Roofing Slatenow is the time to apply. To apply: EMAIL or POST us your CV or CALL IN FOR AN APPLICATION FORMEmail: sales@

Hip, hip, hooray,we’ve had Music Day

Hope you enjoyed the continual music-making in the Methodist Chapel inearly October when kind musicians from around the area shared their talentsthroughout the day. There were charity stalls selling Christmas cards and goodies and peoplepopping in and out throughout the day - but lunchtime was especiallypopular when there were delicious soups and sweets on offer.

Obviously tea or coffee was available at all times, and afternoon tea wasluscious with jam and cream splits, cakes and buns. Many thanks to all whoprovided the tempting fare and worked so hard throughout the day.

Also. there were plenty of donation jarsaround so that we could make a goodcontribution to this year’s charity, whichwas the Merlin Appeal.

Don’t know the exact amount but £400has been sent to the Appeal and thosemanning the charity stalls werepleased with their takings.
