n this issue’s front cover is artworkcreated by a student at CastleCommunity College and insidethe issue there is a piece about

their performing arts department. It’s good tosee local artistic talents being encouragedand nurtured and long may it continue.

What an amazing summer of events we’vehad and it’s been so good to see the townbusy while basking in sunshine, albeit inbetween some cracking thunderstorms!

Once again Deal turned out for all theCarnival & Regatta events and the parade waseven better than last year. Well done to theDeal, Walmer & Kingsdown Carnival andRegatta team. Sadly, once again, the end of abrilliant couple of weeks was spoiled by themindless vandalism at Walmer paddling pool.Such a shame that not everyone has pride intheir town.

Enjoy the coming autumn and let’s hope wesee more of these glorious sunny days whichmake Deal even more special.

Players are often taken out for day trips andthere is an end of season party and aChristmas party for the players, which everyone looks forward to.

The team is a great support group not onlyto the players but also to parents and carerswho often feel isolated.

he Performing Arts Department atCastle Community College haslong been recognised as an integral part of an outstanding

school. The Christmas pantomime is something of a tradition for many families inthe community. Lots of us will have been tosee our children, neighbours, relatives orfriends involved in staging one of these productions, waving excitedly from the darkness of the seats. Peer a little closer, however, and you may be surprised to seejust how much more really goes on.

Before the lights come up on the finishedproduct, a remarkable amount of work goesinto helping the students to achieve theirpotential. Most of the creations you see infront of you are a way of showcasing theyoungsters’ talents in order to support theirprogress towards a qualification. From GCSEsin Dance and Drama, through BTEC Level 2and 3 qualifications in Music, to BTEC Level 3qualifications in Performing Arts or TechnicalTheatre, all students are set on the right pathways for them.

But the Performing Arts Department are notjust about qualifications. The department hasa strong ethos. That is: offer everybody anopportunity to take part in something theyenjoy.

Kate Hayes-Watkins, Head of Performing Arts, says, “To us, the number of students that perform is probably the thing we are most

proud of. We try and give the studentsopportunities to find different skills that theymight have. It’s about team work and workingtogether to be the best we can be.”

The coming academic year will see studentsworking in the department spreading theirwings and performing on some grand stages.Showcasing at The Shakespeare for SchoolsFestival at the Gulbenkian Theatre inCanterbury and in a dance and drama eventin the West End’s Her Majesty’s Theatre willgive the students a taste of life as a performing professional, something elsewhich is significant to the department.

Throw into the mix a whole-school musical(chosen by the students themselves), theweekly Film Clubs, Art Cafes and afterschoolDance and Drama Clubs and you’ll see thatthe glossy spectacles are really just the headline act for a very impressive supportcast. www.castle.kent.sch.uk

couple of years ago, after feedingtwo wild cats in my garden, oneof them turned up with two smallkittens and left them with me,

which I considered a wonderful gift of nature. Then the second cat brought three more kittens, so I built them a shelter and to prevent further multiplication borrowedsome traps from the local RSPCA Branch andneutered all seven. In the process I got caughtmyself and became an RSPCA Trustee.

I was impressed from the moment I saw theCanterbury and Dover Animal Centre, whichthe Branch was building overlooking theWestbere Lakes just outside Canterbury. Itopened in October last year, though remainsa work in progress with further facilities still tobe added. The volunteer spirit is infectious,so pay a visit, please, but be prepared to stay.

We are an independent local charity providing care for, and rehoming, unwantedor neglected domestic pets. Licensed by thenational RSPCA and subject to their strict animal welfare standards, we receive no central funding and instead rely on localdonations and the sale of goods in ten charityshops, including those in Deal and Dover.

The Animal Centre already holds up to 80cats in 40 specially designed units, while dogkennels and a small pet section are nowunder construction. The four-acre site is alsobeing nurtured as a wildlife habitat, with apond and nature trail for schools. Animal welfare education will be offered once thebuilding programme is complete.

We serve a large part of Kent, from east ofSittingbourne across to Deal and Dover.People are invited to get involved by rehoming a lovely animal, donating goods totheir local RSPCA shop, volunteering, organizing events and fundraising activities ordonating to help fund this vital work.

Jade Powell and Ryan Asher, two young veterinary nurses from Herne Bay, have justlaunched the ‘Gift of a Day’ fundraisingscheme. The cost of running the AnimalCentre is calculated at £500 per day, whichJade and Ryan raised in a sponsored skydive.More donations can be seen on our websiteand we would welcome similar support!

f you are newly graduated and tryingto get that first foot on the job ladder,it can be a daunting time for you (andyour parents!). Getting a degree is

only the first step – companies don’t hire academic achievement, they hire people.

Having been the Director of several graduateprogrammes during my career, I have read manythousands of applications and interviewed hundreds of candidates. Learning to ‘sell’ yourselfon paper and in person is a skill you will have towork at. Here are my top ten tips for increasingyour chances of landing an interview and converting it into a job or internship:

1. Your CV is never done. Tailor it to each role you apply for.

2. Don’t just present a list of responsibilities for

the uni/work experience roles you held. Whatdid you learn? What skills did you acquire?

3. Layout is crucial. You have about 6 seconds tocapture the reader’s interest.

4. Academic results are not everything. Present arounded person on your CV.

5. Don’t cut and paste template letters. Write from scratch and personalise them.

6. Don’t make exaggerated claims – you could come unstuck at interview.

7. Be prepared to backup your claims. You’re a team player? – so have an example ready.

8. Failures can be formative. Be prepared to talk about them and what you have learned and done differently.

9. Research your prospective employer thoroughly, and your interviewer if possible.

10. You have spoken before you even open yourmouth at interview. Look and act the part.

here are different types of Fungal Nail Infection which cause this embarrassing problem. In the last 3years people can benefit from Laser

Surgery to treat this condition quickly, safely andwith minimum discomfort.

This healing laser penetrates the nail into the nailbed killing the fungal infection. More than onetreatment is required, usually between 3-4 treatments; it depends on the number of infectednails and the duration of time they have beeninfection.

You have to be patient as nails grow slowly; it maytake between 4-6 months to see the benefits ofthis new treatment. The Laser is much safer andmore effective than the ointments and creamsprescribed by doctors because it gets under thenail bed.

To date we have treated nearly 1,000 patients inour four clinics. We do not claim 100% successrate; our success rate is approximately 72%.

Our clinics are run by medically qualified staff andnot sales people.

We would invite you to visit our website, thereyou can view our video and download thebrochure.

This is a great one-pan dish full of freshflavour. Monkfish is quite pricey but themeaty flesh is delicious and bakes really well, however you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock filletif you prefer. Serve with a green salad andwarmed ciabatta bread to mop up all thelovely herb and lemon flavoured pan juices.

2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good quality fruity one)350g small new potatoes, halved1 red, 1 yellow and 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks225g small plum tomatoes, halved4 monkfish fillets (each weighing about 150g)50g butter, softenedPared rind and juice from 1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve1 tbsp fresh chopped oreganoSalt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6.Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin andheat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hotoil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once.

2. Add the peppers and tomatoes to theroasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil.Make a space in the tin and add the monkfishfillets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for10 minutes.

3. Dot the butter over the fish fillets andsprinkle over the lemon rind, juice andoregano. Season with salt and freshly groundblack pepper and roast for a further 5-10

minutes until the fish isjust cooked through andthe potatoes and peppersare tender.

fter the freshness of early summer gardens can look a bit dull, fading intothe late summer, but there are manywonderful plants to keep colour and

interest until the autumn.

Some plants just carry on flowering. The climberSolanum album will display its lovely white flowersuntil the first frosts and the tall perennial Verbenabonariensis continues its haze of purple flowers.Hardy geraniums, nepetas and lady’s mantle(alchemilla mollis) will have a fresh growth ofleaves or flowers if cut back hard after the firstblooms fade.

But the real joy comes from plants at their best inthis season. Japanese anemones have tall stems ofwhite or pink flowers, aconites (monkshood) havewonderful deep blue spires (take care, as poisonous) and red hot pokers, Kniphofia

caulesens or rooperi, bear bright spikes of hotred, orange or yellow.

Daisy flowered plants thrive now, tall rudbeckiashave brilliant large yellow flowers, helleniums canbe found in orange/browns and now Echinaceaare found in red, magenta, orange even green! These large flowers leave attractive cones whenthe petals have fallen. And of course the aster, there are many choices of this small flowered plant.

Don’t forget autumn bulbs, nerines, kaffir lilies(Schizostylis), even autumn crocus, and of courselate flowering shrubs such as abelia, fuchsia, andhydrangeas or the lovely blue caryopteris andceratostigma.
