e head into Spring with some glorious days and Deal has beenlooking radiant in the sunshine. It’sbeen an interesting few weeks with

exciting events happening and announced.

Although there was a mixed reaction, we hadthe amazing sight of the old cooling towers atRichborough being demolished. In Ringwouldwe had a slightly fuzzy view due to the mistthat morning but it did see many of the villagers pitch up with cameras & binocularsto witness the event and the pictures &videos have been fascinating to see.

The Olympic Torch route & runners wereannounced and I really hope that everyonemakes the most of this exciting & memorableday and turn out to support the team. I forone will be heading to the Pier early to makesure I see it, as this is something I will not seeagain in my lifetime.

The Café Platform 1 has now opened its doorsand is supplying our commuters with tea, coffee & papers as they head off each day. Anew Tea Room is opening across from DealCastle which will look after locals & visitorsalike - best wishes to The Keep House TeaRoom - I am looking forward to my first visit!

Finally, a big thank you to Nigelat White One Sugar whoallowed me to use one of theirimages for the front cover.

SPRING,BUT ANYGREENSHOOTS?

or gardeners this amazing weather is a double edged sword, the sunshine is bringing things forward into bud and flower, and

the ground frost is nipping the growth, literally in the bud. On top of this the sunshineand lack of rain means we can look forward toour lovely mowed lawns looking brown andworn like a test match pitch after a thoroughAussie drubbing.

The sun also does something else in ushumans. It lifts our very souls and despiteexorbitant petrol prices, bizarre new planninglaws and yet more allegations of our politicians of all party’s being gray in theirdealings with all things financial, there is aspring in our steps and a feeling that all mightbe okay after all.

Things are happening in Deal, little spots ofprivate investment are taking place and whenaccompanied by the national chains whichhave arrived in town, some of the populationclearly think things are on the up; or will be

soon. But what do they know that we don’t?

Naturally enough, the answer is probablynothing. The slow, torrid economic climatecannot last for ever and those of us with anysense and the means to do it are paying ourdebts off at a rate of knots, whilst those mostaffected by the horror of a job loss, are tightening their belts until they squeak, desperate to hang on for better times. Thereare some jobs out there, new roles and a lotmore small lean businesses exploiting a skillbase many of them didn’t know they had untilthe economic crash came along.

Quality will always win through in life andDeal is a quality town which should be lovedand cherished and invested in by the localcouncil, the private sector and the multi-nationals and it is starting to happen. Slowlyand cautiously we are on the up, green is onthe horizon.

Have a good couple of monthsProteus.

ating well doesn’t have to beexpensive. If you know how toprepare fresh ingredients fromscratch you can eat delicious, healthy

food every day, even on a tight budget. Thatis the philosophy behind Whole School Meals, the local social enterprise running SkylightCafé within in North Deal’s Golf Road Centre.

Café Manager, Sue Mitchell, adds: “A mealprepared from good fresh ingredients, cooked well and presented nicely can besuch a pleasure, whether you are eating alone, with family and friends or among strangers. Inmodern life we are starting to forget this.”

So now Skylight Café is on a mission to bringgood food on a budget to North Deal.

Thanks to a grant made to Whole School Mealsby the Big Lottery, Skylight Café will be creatingopportunities for local people to enjoy preparing- and eating - healthy fresh meals and snacks.

In the planning is a fruit and veg bag scheme.“Our plan is to offer good value fruit and vegbags with demonstrations of how to preparedelicious dishes from the contents. We’ll videothe demos and post them on our Facebookpage so folks can access them whenever theywant”, says Sue.

Already Skylight Café offers great value, freshlyprepared lunches on week days, with a discountfor pensioners. Once a month the Golf Road

Centre organises a Foodie Friday eveningmeal and during school holidays children’sfood fun workshops are in high demand.

Other local projects at different venues willinclude cookery courses. Whole School Mealsis particularly keen to help young parentsbecome confident in preparing healthy mealsfrom scratch. There will also be cookery lessonsfor men and for anyone on a low income whowants to learn the basics and enjoy being creativein the kitchen. Many of the courses will befree of charge, thanks to the Big Lottery grant.

To find out more about what’s on offer or tosign up for a cookery class, drop in to SkylightCafé on a week day between 9am and 4.30pmor visit Whole School Meals’ Facebook Page,or website www.wholeschoolmeals.co.ukAlternatively, email [email protected] or ring 07960 471427.8

igel was always interested in artand, although he didn’t work hardat school, there was always a doodle or two on the outside of

his exercise books. A day dreamer at heart, hedrifted through school and ended up at artcollege, where alldrifters end up, studyingTechnical Graphics. There he learned to usea pencil and paintbrushfrom an experiencedcommercial artist.Leaving college fullyequipped to take onthe world he found ajob drawing nuts andbolts. He worked inindustry for many yearswith an artist whoencouraged him to takeup painting seriouslyinstead of always talkingand thinking about it.Finally after 20 years ofdoing the wrong job, hepicked up a paint brushagain only to find hehad a gift that shouldhave been used years before.

He first started selling pictures in Deal nearly8 years ago in Joem Gallery. It soon becameclear that Deal was a popular town and hispanoramic night time view of the seafrontbecame a real hit. When the gallery closed,he went in search of a new window to display

in and found Zoom Photo. The owner wasvery obliging, and although a little scepticalabout how popular the pictures would be,allowed his window to be used, resulting inhim being pleasantly surprised at the sales. Itseems people are very proud of Deal and

love views of their townas they are still sellingwell.

Nigel’s latest venture iscreating art producedon computer in the styleof the old railwayposters for the series‘White One Sugar’. Thishas become a familyaffair as his son anddaughter are nowinvolved. He now has tofind work for his wifeand the dog. The name‘White One Sugar’ camefrom his daughter, Karen, who had this title in herhead. It is how she takesher coffee. The pictures were popularfrom the start with Deal,

cover artwork, being one of the first. The second of Deal was drawn by Neil and to hisdad’s disgust, became a bigger hit!

Questions about yourbusiness or organisation...Choose 5 words which best describesyour business…Reliable, Adaptable, Trustworthy, Flexible,Reasonable.

How long have you been in business?Since 2004

Any particular reason why you are basedin Deal?Lived here, or around here all my life, where else?

Do you have employees and if so how many? For an increasing amount of time, yes. It dependson the amount and type of work coming in.

Who are your typical customers? If I have learnt one thing during my time inbusiness it’s that whatever you think of as typicalin any way you can think of, isn’t. That includescustomers, rates, jobs to be done, anything.

What area does your business cover, justDeal or further afield?I’ll go anywhere that I’m asked to go, as longas it’s worth it for both me and the client. The majority of my work is local, but recentlyI seem to spend a lot more time in Thanet, and have been as far as Whitstable.

What would you say makes your businessdifferent from your competitors? My orange shirt in the first instance! But inreality I don’t know, I spend my time ‘doingmy own thing’. A favourite quote from a testimonial is “You don’t often find an all-round handyman of his (high) standardwho also knows how to operate a diary”Figure that kind of sums it up really.

Who or what has been the biggest influence in your business life? Two things, the first, arrogantly, is me. I haveto be able to live with my actions, and I sufferfrom raging conscience, so I have to be happywith the work I do and generally my standardsare higher than the clients. The second was acourse on ‘Boosting sales and profits’, I attendedabout 2 and a half years ago. This altered mybusiness philosophy so much that the followingyear I experienced huge business growth.Good for me, but most importantly, for YOU!

One piece of business wisdom you wouldpass on to others in business?Always look for new ways to do...anything,whether product, marketing, P.R., etc. Neverbe stagnant.

What do you consider your biggestachievement?Making a living whilst playing by my rules.Successfully growing my business during arecession.

Questions about you...Choose five words which best describe you…Blunt, determined, tart (check context)! Self-contained, honest.

What do you love most about Deal? The view back from the end of the pier.

The person from history you’d most liketo invite to dinner?

Gordon George Byron. Mind, I think dinnerwould be about as much as I could managebefore he would have to go. Or possibly T.E.Lawrence.

If you had a “fantasy 24 hours” with notravel restrictions how would you spend it?Again I'd love to have been a fly on the wall(or semi drunk in the corner) that night in VillaDiodata. Byron and the two Shelley's,amongst the others, just the thought of possible conversations is intoxicating.

What’s your favourite way of relaxing?Playing bass or the piano, writing and performing with Laura, although pretty muchanything involving music really, especially witha beer. Equally, family time or riding my bike!

Any interesting or unusual hobbies orpastimes? As a countryman I love most outdoor pursuits, as a result I also work for the RSPB.

If you were invisible for a day what wouldyou like to do? No idea.

What keeps you awake at 3.00am in themorning?Nothing.

What treat or luxury would you mosthate to give up?Not tellin’

What is your most treasured possessionor memory?Possession, my bass, a Warwick Corvette NT4great sound and full of character. Memories -couldn’t pick one, but it would be a family moment.

f you were to believe the hypeyou could be forgiven for thinkingthat health and safety is at theroot of all-evil. Even the Prime

Minister has described it as a “monster”.Apparently, it stops parties and events, creates seemingly endless paperwork, causesstrikes (and long queues at petrol pumps) -and that’s just for starters! However, the truthis actually somewhat different. For a start, most people who are involved in health andsafety aren’t two headed monsters! And, ifyou speak to the right ones, you’ll soon realisethat health and safety shouldn’t get in the wayof anything - in fact, if it’s done properly, evenpotentially dangerous tasks can be completedsafely.

What about the law? Many are led to believethat new pieces of health and safety legislation, which ban this and that, come into effect onan almost daily basis. However, this simplyisn’t the case - in the past five years, healthand safety legislation has remained largelyuntouched.

Why the seemingly daft decisions? Becausehealth and safety laws are written in such waythat allows individual interpretation andapplication, many do so in very differentways. For example, on one site the use of ladders may be accepted as a perfectly safeoption. On another, they may be banned. The law has nothing to do with this; instead,

it’s the decision of whoever runs the site.

At HSE Advisor we take great pride in ensuring that the businesses and organisationswe support, make the right choices when itcomes to safety, that they’re not weigheddown with paperwork and that they’re ableto get the job done in a safe, efficient andlegal manner. So, if you’re looking for advisorsthat guide you away from the potential healthand safety traps out there, and don’t say, “Youcan’t do that” all too frequently, then look nofurther. Our team of Chartered Health andSafety Practitioners are on hand wheneveryou need them and, at a price that’s notbeyond the reach of even the smallest companies or organisations.

For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment toa main course, it’s time to thinkagain. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mildflavours of the mozzarella andeggs mean that the asparagus isstill the star of the dish.

275g new potatoes450g asparagus5 large eggs200g buffalo mozzarella50g Parmesan, grated2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley2 tbsp olive oilSea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6.Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boilthem in salted water.

2. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan forthe last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

3. Drain everything and refresh in cold water.Thickly slice the potato then add the noodlesand toss well to mix.

4. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dicethe mozzarella and add to the eggs alongwith 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground

pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg.Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

5. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

6. Pour in the egg mixture making sure someof the spears are sitting at the top. Leave tocook for around 10 minutes until the edgesare starting to firm up.

7. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bakefor 8-10 minutes until the frittata is goldenand firm.

8. Serve straight from the pan with a crispgreen salad.

alue Pet Care in Sondes Roadopened its doors in February welcoming the people of Deal toaffordable pet care. The clinic,

formally Maison Dieu, re-opened with anarray of excitement over new signage andvery affordable prices; not only for MaisonDieu’s existing clients but also for the community of Deal and the surrounding areas.Practice Manager Peter Hicks said “These areexciting times for the clinic. We have re-brandedand changed our outlook. We have a realcommunity feel and a desire to offer the peopleof Deal and surrounding areas access to greatanimal care at very competitive prices inthese austere times”.

The practice which has been on the site forover 30 years will be keeping the same hardworking and conscientious staff who pridethemselves on ensuring all clients receive thebest care for their pet.

The philosophy of the practice is to allow itsclients access to the best possible preventativehealthcare, but at prices which are easilyaffordable making it available to all our muchloved four legged family members! Value PetCare's pricing structure is highly competitiveoffering clients lower prices. For example, booster vaccinations for both cats and dogsare from just £15.00 inc. VAT and thepuppy/kitten full course is only £40 inc. VATfor a course of two vaccinations.

However, preventative care is not the onlything on offer at Value Pet Care; the consultation fee for a full check-up is only£25.00 inc. VAT, making this one of the mostinexpensive in the area. Value Pet Care alsooffers half price neutering.

Value Pet Care understand that paying for apet’s treatment is not always easily affordablein one go so they are offering clients a loyaltyscheme which allows them to pay a monthlymembership fee (starting from as little as£9.99 a month) to help spread the costs inthese tough times.

If you would like more information on theprices, the loyalty scheme and this veterinarypractice with a difference please call ValuePet Care - 01304 373 042.

tand at the end of Deal pier andlook back at the stunning coastline. If the town planners had had theirway in 1964 you would now be

looking at a skyscraper devoted to local government, an oversized post office and vastamounts of car parking space across whichyou could view the railway station. Insteadyou look at one of the best conserved 18thand 19th century towns in southern England...and three miles of stunning coastal landscape. The Deal Society has everything to do with thedifference. In 1964 the Society was formed toprotect the heritage of this wonderful town.

In every year since 1964 the town has beenfaced with challenges and opportunities to itsfuture. Historic buildings have been fire balledand replaced with mediocre architecture. Butnot without protest and criticism. Other planshave been developed that would lead toswathes of land being covered with urbansprawl. But they have not succeeded becausearguments have been mounted about urbandesign and what helps a town to flourish.Buildings have been allowed to decay. But

then lively debates have developed abouttheir use. So we have a reinvigorated Astortheatre and hopefully a renewed cinema. TheDeal Society has always been at the forefrontof those campaigns.

Currently Dover District Council is examiningthrough a study of North and Middle Dealwhether the town could support more than1600 new homes being built here. There willalso be debates on whether enough brownfield sites exist for that development. Or dowe have to start using greenfield sites thatmay also impact on our heritage assets. Therows about the housing developments atSholden are probably only the tip of thedevelopment iceberg! So the Deal Societyremains a crucial element in our communityto challenge and question the easy assumptions that politicians sometimes make. But it is also there to stimulate discussionabout what vision we have for the future ofthis town.
