The dangers of flood waterThis activity plan highlights the importance of sustainably managing our natural resources, focusing on the topic of flooding and the dangers it presents.

What to do

• Explaintothelearnersthat Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is responsible for ensuring that people living in areas at risk of flooding are made aware of the dangers of flooding and how to prepare for a flood.

• Lookatalocalexampleof flooding. (Find picturesand local facts to look atand discuss).

• Identifyifyouarecurrentlyin a flood zone.Maps are available on the NRW website:https://naturalresources.wales/evidence-and-data/maps/long-term-flood-risk/?lang=en

• Spiltintosmallgroupsof4or5 and give them each a small pot or cup.

• Explaintothelearnersthatthere are many dangers associated with flood water. With reference to the What’s in flood water information sheet, question the learners and use a metre stick to highlight facts discussed.E.g.15cm/6 inches of fast flowing water can knock you off your feet.

• Askthelearnerstothinkaboutwhatcolourtheymightexpectflood water to be and why? Howwould it vary from clean water?

• Askthemwhatnastiestheymight find in flood water. Aseach suggestion is made, discussthe dangers associated with it.Then add it (or a representation)to each of their pots.

E.g. Bluepaint - things that mightpollute the environment – oil, petrolRedpaint – harmful chemical from industrial or agriculture runoffBrownpaint - bacteria from sewageWhitepaint - milk A spoon of soil, silt and sand, objects/rubbish

• Explainthatasfloodwatermoves around, so do the objectsand chemicals. You can givethem a spoon to stir the water intheir pots.

• Explainthatwhenfloodwaterenters a building it not onlymakes things very difficult tosee but can cause objects tomove from one place to another.Therefore, even if they are reallyfamiliar with a room or place,in the event of a flood theyshould avoid entering the waterin case they become injured orentangled by objects that theycannot see beneath the surface.

• Toconsolidatethemessageaskwhat they would do if they woketo find flood water had enteredtheir house.
