M y wife and I were recently having a pleasant dinner with our friends, the Longo’s, from San Juan. While discussing my recent 400-

mile trip (in one day) on a motorcycle, the subject came up about motorcycle licensing in the state of Georgia. “I’ve been riding for over 50 years”, said I, “and I still have a learners permit”. “Fifty years!” exclaimed Dr. Longo. “You must be quite a slow learner!!”

I suppose that, from time to time, we all seem to procrasti-nate on certain things in our lives, however, some of us have developed this unproductive habit into an “Art Form”. And I

am quite a skilled artist. I am trying to change though. I’ve heard that you can change bad habits into good ones through daily discipline. So I’ve learned to complete my tasks at the same time each and every day – the last minute. And if it wasn’t for that last minute, I might not get anything done.

Seriously though, there can be some good things about waiting a while to get started. Those who get the job done fi rst thing may become too tired to enjoy the unimportant, but fun, things. A “Disciplined Slackerd” will always get the job done, even if at the eleventh hour. And it helped me get a few passing grades in school. I usually waited till the night before (or the next morning) to turn in a report. The teachers were so fl ab-bergasted to receive it on time, they gave me extra credit and upped me to, perhaps, a “C”. …. Sometimes. It took me 10 years to win my division in vintage sports car rac-ing. Just think if I had won immediately, there would have been little else to look forward too. And those folks who start too early, sometimes get discouraged, leaving us procrastinators to seize their opportunity as well as ours.

Actually, and with all kidding aside, this is a serious issue with many of us. There can be lost opportunities as well as unfortunate consequences for those who put things off until later. And sometimes later is just not good enough. I have accomplished more than some, yet less than others, but I could have done far more with a disciplined approach to taking action at the appropriate time. I recently ran across some relevant quotes about procrastina-tion which I have included in our “Encouraging Words” section. Perhaps they will get us thinking how we can develop a new mind-set, a different approach to winning this war, or at least winning one battle at a time. I believe there will be some positive rewards awaiting

you…. and for me. Let’s make a go at it.

I recently had the opportunity to visit “The Dog House” just off Bulls-boro Dr. in Newnan. It’s a full-service grooming and boarding facility owned by Newnan’s Grace Woodford. I felt quite impressed with the cleanliness and comfort of the animals, as well as the professional at-

titude of the employees. They all seemed to love what they were doing.

Boarding and grooming is not just a business for Grace, but something she loves doing. “I learned from a person who once groomed for Walt Disney. I did chores around her farm, doing labor for education,” said Grace. “I watched and learned with no pay. And it was almost six months before she let me do my first groom-

ing. That dog took me 8 hours but I passed the test and later started grooming for her.” That was about 40 years ago.

But Grace Woodford didn’t stop learning. She attended seminars and eventually participated in them. That work finally qualified her as an international speaker, judge and consultant. And now being a Certified Mas-ter Groomer Meritus, she is at the pinnacle of her trade. Moreover, Grace has the honor of being the first in the country to receive dual certification from the Interna-tional Society of Canine Cosmetology and the American Boarding Kennel Association.

“I’m a perfectionist and very picky about how I run this business,” Grace told me. “We have a different attitude – our employees work as a team, and are passionate about the care and well-being of our customer’s dogs.” That at-titude was evident as I was shown through the facility and talked with the employees.

The Dog House provides a clean and comfortable environment for its overnight “guests”. They have playtime and are fed only premium food, and they all get loving attention. But the dogs with that “upper crust” attitude may want to reserve one of Graces “suites”, which include a real (but down-sized) bed, wall murals, and a sliding patio door to a private run! (It really is a “dog’s life” there.) There is also day care plan from 9 to 6 daily. (They take cats, too) In addition to routine pet styling, The Dog House can provide special spa treatments including carding, hand stripping, facials, and pawdicures including paw and leg massages.

So when you need a place to safely care for your pet, whether an overnight stay or a proper grooming, you may want to consider The Dog House lo-cated at 22 Jefferson Place. And for an appointment or for more detailed information, ring them at 770-253-7234 or check their web site at www.doghousekennel.com. Just tell them The Coweta Shopper sent you.

He’s asking everyone interested to pass the word and recruit friends. Banks says after a few hours of hard work, he’ll reward the volunteers with the first-guided bike ride in the park. So, bring your bikes too. The May 17 workday will consist of clearing the corridor of ground cover, debris and flora; pruning back or removing small trees and other obstacle plants; and cutting into sideslopes to create a sustainable trail surface. Please let the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend State Park know in advance if you are planning to participate. Contact information is available at their website: bendfriend.com Water and snacks will be provided. Tools will also be provided, but tools from the following list will also be welcome.

• Boots and work gloves • Water • High-energy good-carb snacks • Insect repellant • A Sutter 300 mini-dozer or similar trail-building machine • rakes: leaf, garden, or landscaping (leaf pref.) • gas- or battery-powered blowers • machetes • sling blades • loppers and pruning shears • hand saws: bow, pruning, etc. • gas- or battery-powered string trimmers • axes and hatchets • shovels, picks, adze hoes • post-hole diggers • wheelbarrows

By LaTina EmersonCoweta’s Deal Finder

Below are some leftovers from a previous Coweta’s Deal Finder col-umn on saving vacation $$$... Would you like to take a break from your routine and see some new sights? Here’s some advice from a local travel expert on how to make your dollars stretch when

making vacation plans. Q: What is your advice for how to save on flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises? A: “We always recommend to ‘bundle’ flights, hotels, and rental cars into packages, which usu-ally offers a lower total price,” said Michael Hicks, Executive Vice Pres-ident at Uniglobe Travel Partners. When booking flights, Hicks says:

• Flying midweek is much cheap-er than flying on weekends • Being flexible on flight times and dates may lead to lower fares. • Do not buy the day prior to departure • Book travel arrangements on Tuesdays and Wednesdays • Avoid holidays “If booking a family trip (4-plus people), we recommend start-

ing to plan more than one year in advance due to payment options, customization of trip, more avail-ability, and lower prices. A USA Today study found that booking travel arrangements 54 days in ad-vance for domestic, 121 days for Europe and 83 days for Mexico will give you the ‘best’ travel pric-es,” Hicks said. Travelers can get the best prices to

Europe during November and early May, he added. To save on cruises: • Travel during low season (Sep-tember-November) •  Stay away from holidays • Travel consultants have rela-tionships with the cruise lines and may be able to upgrade you to a better cabin, obtain lower rates, re-ceive onboard credit, etc.

Encouraging Words

ProcrastinationProcrastination is the problem of putting things

off. Many of us procrastinate on certain, or many

things in our lives and come up with some quite

elaborate excuses as to why we can’t do this task

today. By changing our attitude toward our work

and doing it energetically, we’ll fi nd that those

tasks that once seemed boring, will take on a new

meaning. By changing our attitude, we can learn

to tackle them with enthusiasm for the sheer joy of

accomplishment.

Q“Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task”.

~ William James

Q“Putting off an easy thing makes it hard.

Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible”.

~ G. C. Lorimar

Q“Waiting is a trap.

There will always be excuses to wait. The truth is, there are only two things

in life, excuses and results, and the excuses just don’t count.

~ Robert Anthony

Q“You cannot escape the responsibility

of tomorrow by evading it today.”

~ Abe Lincoln

Q“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing while the soul

of the diligent is richly supplied”

~ Proverbs 13:4

QThink About It!

Long-Term Care (LTC) is a source of confusion or outright denial for most Americans. In a recent study about LTC, 75% of Americans have never had a conversation about LTC with their loved ones and 70% would not know what to do if a family mem-ber was to require immediate LTC. Just 38% of people think they will need LTC one day, however the real number is closer to 50% of people who will need some form of LTC, either at home, daycare or a Skilled Care Center.

Women are especially vulnerable as they are most likely to serve as a primary caregiver while they are still young and before needing care of their own in later years. Being a caregiver may impact their health as well. It’s imperative for women to redefi ne bal-ance in their lives and have a clear plan in place for their LTC. Despite longer life spans, women don’t plan for LTC for themselves.

You need to plan for coverage. LTC costs continue to rise. Home care currently averages $17 an hour, assisted living care $4,000 per month, and skilled nursing home care $5,627 per month. Most people think that their healthcare insurance will pay for skilled care, but this is only true as long as their in-surance company believes their condition is improv-ing. What if your condition doesn’t improve and you need LTC at home, in an assisted living community or in a skilled nursing facility? Even if you are cov-ered by Medicare, it will only pay 100% of the costs of such care for 20 days following a 3-day hospi-tal stay. It may partially cover days 21-100 of such care, but even so, you will be responsible for a daily co-pay of $152 (in 2014). If you still need care be-yond day 100, you will be required to privately pay the entire cost or depend on Medicaid. And, since

you must have less than $2,000 in available assets in order to qualify for Medicaid, the reality is that you must fi rst deplete your assets before Medicaid is available.

So, is there another option to cover LTC costs with-out depleting your assets and/or relying on Medic-aid? The answer could be to purchase a Life Insur-ance Policy with a LTC Rider which will guarantee a fi xed premium AND could pay up to $9,600 per month directly to you without the need for receipts like regular LTC and whose premiums can increase each year. It is important to note that a Life Insur-ance Policy with a LTC Rider insures someone will receive a benefi t unlike a regular LTC policy, where if you don’t use it, you lose it!

Regular Long-Term Care Insurance may go the way of the dinosaur. In recent years, Unum Group dropped out of the group LTC business, and Pruden-tial Financial Inc., said that it would cease offering individual LTC insurance, though it will continue to provide coverage through employer-based groups. Other notable exits include Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, MetLife Inc., and Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America. Meanwhile, even the largest providers of coverage have had to raise their rates.

It is important for you to look for a company that guarantees its premium and is committed to the long term care marketplace. A Life Insurance Policy with a LTC Rider is a great option! Thank you for your time and I hope you will think about planning now for long term care which will put you in control later. LTC costs may be the largest expense you have in retirement.

Long Term Healthcare … Are You In Denial?

In most cases, no. Doctors, hospitals, and VA or CCSP caseworkers refer their clients to certain companies or agencies as a convenience to you. But just because they refer a company, does not mean you have to use or keep that company. I run into folks all the time who are not happy with their Hospice Company, their Home Health Company, their Home Care Company, and even their medical supply company. When I ask them why they are still using them, the common answer is that they didn’t know they could change. YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE. If you are not happy with your hospice, home health, home care or medical supply company, call the company you have and let them know why you are not happy and see if they can make changes. If they can’t or if the changes do not satisfy you, call their competitors and find out if a different company can provide more compatible ser-vices. If you are receiving services through the VA or CCSP, call your case worker and tell them you want to change agencies. If you would like more information about how to make a change for the better, call or email me.

Another new era began on May 12 at Carr Eye Care Center. After almost 13 years at its Baker Road location, Carr Eye Care Center has moved. The new location isn’t far away, about the length of three football fields and just across Hwy. 34 East behind CVS. The official address is 1065 Sullivan Road. And most importantly, the move fits Dr. Sean Carr’s desire for more room. “We simply needed a much larger space,” Carr said. “We’re moving from an office with 2,400 sq.ft. to one over 4,400 sq.ft.” Indeed, the state-of-the-art facility will not change how Carr Eye Care and its staff of six handles the day-to-day requirements of its customers. “Our customers will continue to receive that same superior service and the quality products we’ve offered since opening in 2001,” Carr said. One area in the new Carr Eye Care Center will significantly increase ... the

eyeglass frame display. Carr said the frame display area is now double in size of the previous location and can accommodate a much larger frame se-lection. In addition, Carr Eye Care continues to offer the following products and ser-vices ... comprehensive eye care, contact lens service, treatment of eye diseases, eyeglass frames, LASIK co-management, sunglasses, eyeglass lenses and coatings and contact lens. The move is the second major devel-opment in the growth of Carr Eye Care since its Coweta County beginning. In 2007, Carr Eye Care opened its down-town Newnan location – Coweta Eye Care – on Bullsboro Drive under the direction of Dr. Grant MacDonald. And within the last six months, Cowe-ta Eye Care also moved to a state-of-the-art facility on Bullsboro Drive in front of the Food Depot Shopping Center.

LaTina Emerson

Is your high school or college student looking for a summer job?

Here’s some advice for their job search from Sam Hall, Director of Communica-tions for the Georgia Department of Labor.

Students should get busy searching for summer jobs now. Some of the traditional summer jobs have already been filled, but there are still some openings out there. It’s important not to procrastinate, Hall said.

“Probably the best way to find a job, whether it’s a summer job or a full-time job, is to be constantly networking,” Hall said. “Talk to people you know. In the case of students, they should also have their parents talk to people they know to find out if they know of any jobs that are open. Talk to the people who run the businesses where you shop and see if they’re going to have any jobs available for the summer. Just continuously let people know that you are looking for work and ask them if they hear something to please let you know.”

Typical summer jobs include those at restaurants, parks and recreation depart-ments, amusement parks and duties associated with the summer season, he said.

Additional advice from Hall:

u In Coweta County, visit the Georgia Department of Labor’s Newnan Career Cen-ter at 30 Bledsoe Road in Newnan to find positions that employers have posted.

u Visit www.employgeorgia.com to search for job openings, which are listed geo-graphically.

u Check the classified ads in local newspapers and The Coweta Shopper.

u Students in Coweta and Meriwether counties can learn about job opportuni-ties available through the Workforce Investment Act’s Summer Youth Employment Program by calling Paxen Learning Corporation at (770) 229-3558. These jobs are usually reserved for youth from low-income families. They’re typically jobs at various public entities, such as government-owned parks and recreation areas, or county and state government agencies.

u When submitting an application in person or attending an interview, dress and groom neatly and appropriately. Wear attire that matches the type of job you’re seeking. Don’t wear shorts and a T-shirt.

“The first impression that a job seeker makes on an employer will normally deter-mine if the person will get the job,” Hall said.

u When completing job applications, bring your resume, if you have one, to help fill out the application quickly and ac-curately. If you don’t have a work history, write down some of your strengths that an employer could find valuable, such as be-ing good at math and other useful skills.

u During the interview, be prepared to tell an employer why you are the best candidate for the job and explain your strengths. Tell the employer you under-stand the importance of 1) arriving at work on time and being ready to work for the entire shift, 2) dressing appropriately and 3) having transportation to and from work. Before the interview, find out what days and times you’re available to work based on your transportation. Give the employer

these days and times during the interview.

u Bring the names and contact information for job references and personal refer-ences with you, so you can provide this information, if the employer asks. Always tell your references ahead of time if an employer may potentially contact them.

u If the job seeker is under 17 years old, he or she must have a work permit. Students can get a work permit form from their school. Their parent and employer must fill out designated sections. Then, the employer will send the form to the Geor-gia Department of Labor so the work permit can be issued.

Symbiosis is the living together of unlike plants to the mu-tual advantage of the partnership - otherwise known as com-panion planting. This is not a new practice, but quite an old one. Over a long period of time, gardeners have learned that different kinds of plants, growing close together, have certain effects on each other - benefi cial or detrimental.

Some examples of companion planting are tall and bush or vining plants grown together, with legumes used to add nitrogen, such as corn with climbing beans and pumpkin or squash. The herb borage can be planted with tomatoes to at-tract bees for good pollination. Aromatic herbs such as rose-mary, mint, sage or thyme, etc. may deter cabbage worms and other insects. Basil is said to repel fl ies and mosquitoes. Catnip may protect against fl ea beetles. Horseradish deters potato beetles and garlic prevents Japanese beetles. Chives help to deter insects. The planting of onions helps discourage ants. Radishes repel insects.

Some fl owering plants are very useful in the garden. Sunfl owers attract bees and birds. Marigolds repel and kill nematodes. Pot marigolds and petunias and nastur-tiums repel insects in the garden.

Organic gardeners are always experimenting with ways to combat pests and insects without the use of chemical sprays and poi-sons.
