W ell, it’s January now, a time when we are just getting a good start on those new year’s reso-

lutions. The fact is, some of these goals may just be continuations of the left overs - those failed at-tempts of past years. And I may be the worst offend-er. I want this year to be different, as it is my goal to ride the wave of technology into the 21st century - or at least get into the late 90’s!

Two years ago in one of my articles, I proudly an-nounced how happy I was to be on the “trailing edge” of this new communications technology. I

boasted of having an aluminum antenna to receive my 3 TV stations, along with the absence of an internet connection to power the computer I didn’t have. I did report, however, our enjoyment of a phone and electricity! But it hasn’t always been this way. At about 10 years old, I was one the first in my neighborhood to have the “can and string” set up as an experimental phone system. About 50 feet of string attached to an open soup can on each end, and pulled tight, would do the predicted job. I would speak into the can while my brother would hold the other end to his ear. “Can you hear me now?” I would shout from a distance of about 15 paces. “Yes, I can hear you” was his response. Job done!

Anyway, at our family Christmas gathering last month, my present day ignorance was exposed by our grand children’s knowl-edge, and possession of, their new iPhones. (You know, one of those things which will do everything but paint your house!) Each one demonstrated their phone’s features to me at a lightning speed, using their fin-gers and thumb with the dexterity of a sur-geon. Now let me say that I’m about 4 times older than my 16 year old grand daughter, Katie, so I must surely be at least 3 times as intelligent. At least!

So, I suppose it’s about time I sailed on the next ship for a new world of high (to me) technology. I’ll have the knowledge of the world at my fingertips. (And I think they said I could make phone calls, too.) But here is what I hope you will not catch me doing. I will do no texting, as my fingers seem to press about 4 letters at once. I will not accept second hand emails about some-one’s disgust concerning the opposite political party, and I probably won’t subscribe to e-dating, as I am perfectly happy with my wife. And finally, I will not attempt to Google an image of a person wearing no clothes since I have more pressing matters to attend. Otherwise I think Ill be quite comfortable making phone calls without a can and string.

Joe

Each year, the President declares January 16th to be Religious Free-dom Day, and calls upon Americans to “observe this day through appro-priate events and activi-ties in homes, schools, and places of worship.” The day is the anniversa-ry of the passage, in 1786, of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. We encourage schools to recognize Religious Freedom Day during the school week leading up to January 16.

SUPERIOR ROOFING A Division of Superior Renovations, Inc.

Did hailstone come down on your roof or did wind blow off your shingles?

Hail impact may cause gradual loss of granules that can, over time, result in premature aging of the shingles. Wind damage may result in the loosening of the self-seal strip. This damage may be immediately visible or may weaken the seal integrity, creating the pos-sibility of future shingle blow off. Or you just need a new roof.

Wind and Hail Damage Is Common … And Your Home May Be At Risk!Call us today for your FREE inspection.

Avoiding the Flu

Not only has the flu arrived early this season, but it appears to moving quickly.

Seniors are at risk of becoming extremely ill from the flu, so it’s up to us to do everything we can to avoid catching it.

We say this to little kids all the time: “Keep your hands away from your face.” But it’s true. Granted, the flu is respiratory and is generally spread through someone sneezing or coughing near us, but flu germs can live on surfaces. If transferred to our hands and then our face, we can catch the flu.

An important point: People who have the flu can give it to you a whole day before they even know they’re getting sick.

Some hints to avoid the flu:

Carry hand wipes when you shop• . If the store doesn’t have any near the carts, use yours to wipe down the handle and seat before you touch it.

Use alcohol-based wipes• on your phone and doorknobs at home, just in case.

Stock up on hand • sanitizer and keep a small bottle with you when you go out.

Stay out of stores • after school hours when small children might be with their parents.

If you haven’t had a flu shot for some reason, call your doctor and ask if you should have one. Age alone, if you’re over 65, can put you in a high-risk category, and so can any medical condition you might have.

If you do get the flu, ask your doctor about a prescription for an antiviral drug. The drugs work best if started within two days of getting sick. They can make the symptoms a little easier to handle, and they can prevent complications like pneumonia.

There are more than 3 million cases of skin cancer in the United States each year. The incidence has increased at such a fast pace that now, over half of

all new cancers are skin cancers. The most common type is basal cell carcinoma, which accounts for 80% of all cases of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma is the next most frequent form and represents about 16% of the total. Malignant melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 4% of all skin cancers. Almost all cases of skin cancer are related to excessive exposure to ultraviolet light (e.g., sunlight) and are more prevalent in fair-skinned individuals. Advancing age is a risk factor for skin cancer, but all types of skin cancer can occur at almost any age. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are not usually life-threatening and are most commonly found in sun-exposed areas. They usually appear as a flesh-colored or reddish bump or patch that may bleed spontaneously. They can be mistaken for a sore that won’t heal or one that heals over for a short time and then turns into a sore again. Melanoma is a much more serious type of skin cancer because of its potential for aggressive growth and metastasis (spread to other bodily sites). Melanoma usually looks like a mole that meets one or more of the “ABCD” criteria: A-Asymmetry, having a different shape on one half as compared to the other half; B-Border irregularity, such as a jagged border; C-Color variations, including multiple colors or especially the color black; D-Diameter, greater than 6 mm. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin surface, not just on sun-exposed areas. In order to reduce the chances of developing a skin cancer, it is important to minimize direct exposure to ultraviolet light (both sunlight and tanning beds) as much as possible. Helpful measures include wearing protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat as well as avoiding the outdoors during the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s intensity is the highest. A sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 should be liberally applied to all exposed skin every morning and reapplied regularly during periods of direct exposure.

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free trans-portation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular can-cer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to

drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Require-ments include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insur-ance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volun-teer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Decorating Around The New Flat Screen TV

We all have to deal with this at some time or another … how do you in-corporate that large black box into your style of decor?

Deciding to hang it over the fireplace is a great way to keep the focal point in the same place; however, placing it too high can cause a strain on your neck. You may have to make some adjustments to the mantle to make it more comfortable for viewing. A simple way to hide all the compo-nent cables is to gather and zip tie the cables, paint them the same col-or as your wall in order to blend in and not be so noticeable.

Another idea is to hang it on the wall and make it the focal point. After all, it is a large part of our daily lives. Give it some pizzazz and frame it with large molding like a picture, or hang a group of artwork art around it and incorporate it as part of the decor. Use prints, photographs or other favorite framed works of art.

Beautiful Living Affordably Priced.

If your current “entertainment” center is not large enough to hold the 72 inch screen, you may have to pass that on to someone else and invest in another furniture piece. You can always go with the modern sleek TV cabinets that are sold along with them; howev-er, using an antique sideboard or setting it on top of a up-cycled, freshly painted dresser will give you a one of a kind solution that others will envy.

There are many solutions to decorating around your new addition … you just have to “think outside of the box”. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh prospective from others to come up with a unique idea that you will enjoy.

Happy New Year to everyone! A little idle time is now available to en-thusiastic gardeners with freezing temperatures and dormant plants and not too much pruning yet. Perhap there’s time to visit a public garden or at least to plan ahead for a future trip.

Gardens that are open for public viewing offer great opportunities to see new and unusual plants, tried and true plants, and excellent de-signs for a wide variety of landscapes. By visiting the gardens of Georgia, we are not only learning and enjoying ourselves; we are also helping to maintain and preserve these gardens. When we introduce our children and grandchildren to nature in all its splendor, we are educating future citizens to cherish, protect and preserve our gardens, parks, and public lands. Please support Georgia’s treasures.

What’s In Your Garage?

This 1948 MGTC was purchased new by Katherine Munson of Detroit, Michigan when she was just 22 years old. This was a special order purchase, as it was fitted with a rare Shurrock supercharger, something she would need to be competitive in her new hobby, sports car racing. In 1949 Munson organized the local chapter of SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and in 1951 won the SCCA Ladies Division Cup. The history of this young woman and her car includes Road racing at Elkhart Lake (now called ROAD AMERI-CA), oval track competition at the Studebaker Proving Grounds in Indiana, and ice racing during the winters. She entered several hill climb events at Wilkes Barre, PA where she would occasionally compete against TV personality, Dave Garroway, in his Jaguar SS-100.

A husband and two young children finally curtailed her ad-ventures by the mid 50’s, and the beloved MG was garaged. In 1999, the then 73 year old Katherine Munson sold the car to a resident of Cowea County, where it remains today – 65 years old, tired but proud. “A little like its owner”.

Third Annual Valentine Social at Thomas Crossroads February 8th,

Local Peachtree Jazz Edition Offers Music, Dancing and RomancingThe United Methodist Men of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in

Newnan are proud to announce their third annual “Heart & Soul” Valentine So-cial on Friday, February 8, 2013, from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. The event will feature the Live Big Band music of The Peachtree Jazz Edition with vocalist Toni Byrd.

The Christian social was a huge success the last two years with over 300 guests each year who enjoyed a beautiful evening of music, refreshments and dancing.

The Valentine Social is designed as an outreach to the community and as an event that encourages fellowship, provides a heart-healthy function for those who care to dance, and enables adults to enjoy an evening of Valentine fun. Proceeds from the social will benefit the United Methodist Men’s mission programs.

Peachtree Jazz Edition is an 18 piece band with outstanding vocalist Toni Byrd. The band plays an extensive repertoire of Big Band music from the ‘30s & ‘40s as well as pop- jazz tunes composed and arranged well into the ‘90s. Origi-nal compositions by Mr. Bill Greenhaw, one of the band’s trombonists, round out the group’s unique presentations. Peachtree Jazz Edition’s repertoire also includes many original arrangements recorded by such artists as Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole, Melissa Manchester and Willie Nelson. For more information, please visit http://sites.google.com/site/peachtreejazzedition/. Click on “sounds” to hear a sampling of the group’s music.

The Valentine Social is open to the public 17 years of age and older. Wheth-er you are a couple or single, this event is designed for you. Those attending may have their portraits taken to commemorate the evening. This year, the event will offer dance lessons and a silent auction as well. Childcare from infant through 5th grade will be available at no charge with advanced reservations to [email protected].

In addition to the musical entertainment, hot teas will be provided as well as gourmet coffee donated by the Newnan Starbucks located at 733 Bullsboro

Drive near the I -85 interchange. Luscious desserts will be provided by the Krog-er Bakery located at 1751 Newnan Crossing East at Lower Fayetteville Road.

Advanced tickets are $15 ($20 at the door). The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets to the Valentine Social can be purchased:
