In earlier days we had a saying, “big brother is watch-ing”. Futuristic movies featured government agencies watching their citizens via “movie cameras” mounted

on city light poles and public places. A good James Bond mov-ie always had a “Bug” (microphone) hidden in a light fi xture or phone, along with cameras rolling behind a mirror. And, of course, there was the tracking device made into the heel of one’s shoe. And this was before GPS! We all thought this was pure science fi ction and that no person, business or na-tion would want to go to the trouble of knowing who we are, where we go and what we do, say or purchase. Ha! That was a time when “invasion of privacy” was when someone was listening in on a party line phone, or steamed open your let-

ters, read the contents, then resealed the envelope. One was really considered to be proudly anonymous by having a private telephone number. Really?

Now that I use the computer more than ever, I’m beginning to understand just how much my privacy is being invaded – all day, every day. When I use a credit card I’m revealing my buying preferences. I can’t buy gas without revealing my zip code. Now “Big brother” knows where my car is and where I get mail. I enjoy looking at interesting sites on the internet, sometimes looking at products I’m interested in purchasing. But if you won’t accept “cook-ies” some sites don’t seem to have much interest in you. A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to buy one of those English style “fl at caps” - tweed, of course. I located a website that had just what I wanted. But inasmuch as I’m more of a looker than a buyer, I put the matter aside. Now somebody, maybe everybody on the planet, knows I want a fl at hat! And they know what size my head is, where I live, my age and my income, if I had one. So now, every time I open my little ipad, a picture of that exact hat dominates the screen until I can delete it. Perhaps I should just go ahead and buy that darned fl at hat and get it over with so they’ll take me off their list!

They say not to put anything on the web you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to know. You’re telling it to the world. However, as I have nothing much to hide, I’ll go ahead and tell you, in advance, what can be found out about me through this stealth surveillance. (1) I’m looking to buy some neuropathy foot cream cause my feet hurt. (2) You can know I have an aluminum antennae and no cable TV since I’m always looking at the PBS schedule on the web (for the two channels we get). (3) I have emailed the IRS that, upon my death, the ash-es are to be mailed to them so they can fi nally be done with me. (4) As you now know that I like English tweed fl at caps, you can rightly assume that I own an old British sports car. (5) And fi nally, LL Bean knows the size pants I now wear, and that they are, unfortunately, somewhat bigger than they used to be. Other than that, I’m a pretty boring old chap!

Now that The Coweta Shopper has a new and improved web site, you can probably fi nd what you are looking for from our loyal advertisers. You won’t see any nude pictures, bad jokes, gossip, or anything else you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to see, but you will fi nd some of the best products and services available in our area. Gary Fields’ introduction to Newnan wasn’t necessarily inten-tional.

� e East Tennessee native had ventured to neighboring Fay-e� e County when it happened.

“My wife, Dianne, and I decided we needed to open a business somewhere,” Gary recalls. “She lived in Peachtree City for a while and we came back here to visit people. And I stumbled upon Newnan.”

� e chance meeting with the city of Newnan came around 2013, shortly a� er Fields le� a business venture in Tennessee. It marked the humble beginning of Wild� ower Leather, a store both Gary and Dianne operate and own in Ashley Park.

“I really liked Newnan’s numbers. I liked its demographics and growth,” Fields said. “We looked everywhere. We looked at Ashville (N.C.). We looked at Nashville. We looked at multiple locations. And a� er doing our own demographic study on premise here, we decided that Ashley Park would be the location for us.”

Wild� ower Leather sells - as you would imagine by the name - leather jackets, leather boots and many other leather goods.

“� ose are our staples,” Fields says.But the name, it really came from a so-called hobby.“I have a history of growing Wild� owers,” Fields says. “And it’s

easy to remember. � e word leather helps get the people in. We knew we had to carry enough leather goods to be a leather store.”

“But the truth is about 70 percent of our clientele are females. � ey love our dresses and our tops. I mean, they really love ‘em. We o� er the kind of product that’s not over-the-top priced and very trendy.”

And the store itself is strategically designed with eye-catching displays of men’s and women’s apparel, utilizing an upscale South-ern look with an abundance of collectibles.

“We don’t look like a big box store by design,” Fields said. “We wanted it to be known that it is locally-owned and locally-operated. So we put things in the store to help make it more interesting like the NASCAR driving suit and we’ve go� a Forrest Gump display. It sug-gests a lifestyle which I think is more southern-based.”

� e NASCAR driving suit was the � rst General Motors suit worn by none other than Dale Earnhardt, Sr., which he donned in 1988.

“I’ve had it since about ‘92. It was race-used, unclean and still has his DNA in it,” Fields says.

It was Fields’ love for NASCAR that turned a normal six-hour drive from his home in the Johnson City, Tenn., area to Newnan into a 43-year expedition, so-to-speak.

A� er graduating from Carter County High School, Fields went into the military which meant a two-year stint in Vietnam (1969-70). When he returned, his focus turned to stock-car rac-ing.

“I’m the only guy that I know that when I came back � om Viet-nam, I came back to a 1970 real Hemi Charger,” he said. “Now, that car would be worth several hundred thousand dollars. I traded it for a race-car trailer and a Chevy van. I had to have that trailer because it was all about racing.”

And growing up in Eastern Tennessee, Bristol and its famous short track was just up the road.

“I’ve been to Bristol races probably close to 100 times,” he said. “I’ve been going there since I was 15.”

His love for racing put him on the NASCAR circuit as a driv-er.

“It wasn’t what people think of NASCAR, it was a junior league so-to-speak. (� e races) were NASCAR-licensed, sanctioned events, but we didn’t run the big tracks. It was Nashville, Bristol, Opp (Ala.), Montgomery and Birmingham.”

Fields won a couple of races and was always a top-10 contend-er. But other responsibilities pulled him away.

“Babies. Children. � e demands for a budgeted paycheck,” Fields said of the reasons he le� racing.

So it was o� to the corporate world with stops in Texas and Alabama.

“I’d been a general contractor for a long time, was into construc-tion,” he remembers. “Had gas stations. � en I got into the restau-rant business, both the operational and development, and helped spearhead a chain of stores. I built 69 restaurants in multiple cities across the country. I was Vice President of national operations. To-wards the end of that I traveled a lot. And I � nally got sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Goodbye corporate world.“I woke up one day to go to the airport at 5 o’clock, I sat up and

said ‘I’m done’,” Fields said. “You know, it was kinda like when For-rest Gump quit running, that was it for me. I’m done.”

“I was also done with ties. I gave away 66 neck ties and 19 sports jackets two days a� er I quit to the VA. � ey were all premium. To this day, I’ve only worn a tie one time and it was to my mother’s funeral.”

Fields moved to the Pigeon Forge, Tenn., area and took o� 27 weeks to build a 6,000 sq.� . log cabin with the help of a couple of his sons. It led to him starting a log-home company named Fields and Dreams and was very successful within one year of starting that business. � en he quickly realized the company’s direction was headed toward where he had just le� ... the corporate world.

“I was having to build a house in this city, then over here and I said that’s enough. I like to sleep in my own bed,” he said.

Two more projects appeared on the radar for Fields, an ultra-successful, 110-acre residential development known as Cedar Falls, just outside of Pigeon Forge. It was so successful, it led to a commitment to develop another residential community - this one a 2,200-acre tract in the most prime mountain property in the entire Smoky Mountains.

“I developed 400 acres in record-time, like 17 months,” he re-called. � en the economic downtown kicked in and long story short, he found his way to Peachtree City before bumping into Newnan.

� e concept of Wild� ower Leather came from people they actually knew.

“My son – Gary Jr. – his wife’s parents had a very successful boot store in Dublin, Ga., called Strickland Boots,” he said. “� en I also had � iends in Tennessee that had western stores, one of them Outback Leather.”

“When you think of most boot stores or most western stores, you think of something o� the � eeway, 5-to-10,000 sq.� . We only have 2,000,” he says. “In our mission it was not to establish ourselves as a western store, but more of an upscale-southern thing, even though we do sell a lot of western � air.”

Wild� ower Leather opened Memorial Day weekend in 2013. And it’s been full-speed ever since.

“We’re extremely hands-on. We’re here all the time,” Gary says of he and his wife. One of their granddaughters, Hayley, also helps in the store. Gary and Dianne have 7 children and 20 grandchil-dren, spread from Michigan to Florida.

“We don’t consider ourselves experts in the � eld, but when we have a question, we go back to our mission - keep it simple and keep it � esh. � at means we bring stu� in-and-out all the time. (Our customers) are not going to run across it out there when walking the sidewalk. We are also very good at being good listeners to our customers.”

“I love Newnan. We’ve had an amazing welcome. I’ve had people tell us they thought this was the ‘damnest concept they’ve ever seen’ or ‘it’s about time Newnan had something like this’.”

Indeed, it did take quite a while though for Fields to � nally se� le on Coweta County.

“It’s all about life experiences to get you where you are,” he said. “My life has certainly been a roller-coaster ride.”

No question, folks in Newnan sure hope that roller-coaster has made its � nal stop.

� e Newnan Dugout Club is giving young-sters - ages 5-14 - the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game from those play-ers now achieving success at the high school level. It’s called the 2014 Newnan Baseball Mini-Camp and it is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8 at Newnan High’s Joe Pope Field.

Campers will receive instruction at every position from current Newnan High Cougar players. At a mini-camp structured like this, youngsters can pick up as much valuable in-formation and tips as they want to learn. Ar-

eas such as footwork for in� elders, increasing accuracy on throws for out� elders, blocking pitches in the dirt for catchers, and hi� ing a baseball the opposite way are some basic types of instruction that can prove key as youngsters develop at all levels.

First-year Newnan High head coach Marc Gilmore says campers will also “have games for each age group in the 2nd half of each ses-sion. And our current players will work with them on hi� ing, � elding and catching.”

� e sessions each day are from 9 a.m. to noon. All participants that sign up and pay the $45 registration fee by Friday, March 21, will receive a camp t-shirt and free admission to watch the Newnan Cougars host Westlake on April 9 in varsity baseball action.

March is the perfect month to do a soil test. Amend the soil with compost, dried manure, lime or other amendments as needed before tilling the area. Remember to fertilize each type of plant according to its individual needs. Nitrogen (fi rst number) promotes leaf formation and green growth. Phos-phorus (second number) produces fl owers, seeds, berries and roots. Potassium (last number) is for overall health. A good general fertilizer is 10-10-10.

March is also a good time to plant shrubs. Plant a little high for clay soils and mulch around them. Use 10-10-10 around most shrubs. Prune spring-fl owering shrubs such as camellias, azaleas and forsythia after they fi nish blooming.

Dead-head daffodils after they bloom, but don’t cut or twist the foliage. Leave it to yellow and die down. Cut back ornamental grasses to about six inches before new growth begins. Divide grasses when new growth starts. The Artemesia ‘Powis Castle’ can be pruned by the end of March. Grapes, muscadines and fi gs should have already been pruned. Plant asparagus, onions, radishes, beets, turnips and parsley now. Since the average last frost date here is April 15th — wait to plant all tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and annuals.

April is the month to divide and replant perennials. Annuals can now be safely planted. This is the month to prepare and plant containers. Summer vegetables still need to wait for all danger of frost to pass and for the soil to warm to proper tem-perature. Don’t forget to water regularly if it doesn’t rain.

� e Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers are pleased to announce that Mr. Tommy Al-den of County Line Nursery will present “Camellias A to Z” on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Extension O� ce.

Mr. Alden has had a life-long interest in camellias. At last count, County Line Nursery was producing over 200 di� erent varieties of camellias in sizes from liners to 25 gallon containers. Tommy also maintains his own personal collection of camellias and his blooms can o� en be found at the head table at local camellia shows.

Mr. Alden will provide history; information about varieties and species, bloom times, landscape application, and planting and insect and disease problems. He will also have a question/answer session at the end of his presentation.

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet has an-nounced its official opening date – Wednesday, March 19. Former Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, who was a stand-out pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, will be on hand to help Ollie’s celebrate its initial day in Newnan and Coweta County. Are you planning a wedding ceremony and reception, but you’re on a budget? Here are some tips to help you save on your special day.

It’s cheaper to get married during certain months, days and times, said Michael Meyers, owner and manager of Something Special in Newnan. Couples can save money if they get married in January, February, March and November. Also, it’s usually less expensive to get married on Friday nights, Saturday mornings and on Sundays, he said.

After couples determine their wedding budget, they can use an online wedding calculator recommended by Jamie Elliott McPherson, director of operations at Vinewood Plantation, to determine how much they should spend on catering, attire, fl owers, music, photography and other items.

Coweta County has several economical venues for weddings and receptions:

The courtroom in the Coweta County Probate Court at 200 Court Square in Newnan is available to rent for weddings, said Lorraine LaRue, coordinator at the Coweta Coun-ty Visitors Center. It holds 250 guests, but can only be rented after regular court hours, not during the day. The cost is $300, which includes the wedding rehearsal. For more information, call (770) 254-2627.

The Historic Train Depot at 60 East Broad St. is open for wedding receptions. For prices, call Tom Redwine at (770) 301-2765 during normal working hours.

Temple Avenue Park and Greenville Street Park in Newnan can be rented for wed-dings and receptions. Couples must call at least 30 days in advance, said Dean Smith, planner with the city of Newnan. He recommends making reservations even earlier because the parks are often booked six to eight months in advance.

To reserve either park, call Newnan’s Planning and Zoning Department at (770) 254-2354. The parks do not have restroom facilities, and no portable facilities are allowed.

a) Temple Avenue Park at 30 Temple Avenue is free to rent. No deposit is required. Some restrictions apply.b) Greenville Street Park can be rented with a refundable $500 security deposit. The deposit will be refunded if patrons leave the park in the condition they found it. Renters must sign a facility use guide document, with rules including no grills and no alcoholic beverages. The park is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center at 275 Pine Road in Newnan has space available for rental. The Golden Creek Room (seating capacity 125) is $300 daily with a $300 refundable deposit, the Sandy Creek Room (seating capacity 250) is $400 daily with a $400 refundable deposit and the New River Hall (seating capacity 450) is $500 daily with a $500 refundable deposit, according to the rental packet provided by Coweta County Fairgrounds.

The theater and lawn costs $300 daily with a $150 refundable deposit. For all spaces,

the refundable clean-up fee deposit will be returned if the facility is left clean. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance. Tables and chairs are pro-

The Newnan Centre at 1515 Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan is available for weddings and four-and fi ve-hour receptions with venue prices varying by the number of guests. To rent the venue for a four-hour reception with up to 100 guests, the cost is $1,700, plus the cost of packages for catering and alcoholic beverages.

Something Special at 83 Greenville St. in Newnan offers discounts for Sunday and weekday weddings. The facility rental fee is $1,500, plus packages for 50 to 200 guests. For 50 guests, the cost is $4,995 plus sales tax.

HERO units are now in Coweta County. After watching HERO units service Metro Atlanta, resi-dents and travelers through Coweta will have this important assistance available for roadside mishaps or breakdowns. The Coweta County Government Facebook Page said Friday that the Georgia Department of Transportation began issuing one HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operator) to patrol I-85 in Coweta on March 1. The unit will patrol from the Fulton-Coweta County line to Exit 47 (Bullsboro Drive/Highway 34). The HERO unit will be available to assist with serious inci-dents as far south as the Coweta-Meriwether County line near Exit 35 (Grantville). According to the 511ga.org website, you can dial “511” and select option “1” to request HERO motorist assistance. The GDOT Transportation Management Center (TMC) dispatch-es HEROs to traffic-related incidents.

Sometimes a story just catches your attention. In this case, it was a Facebook post from Coweta County Government. Denise Bray (pictured with Coweta Co. Sheriff Mike Yeager in that Facebook post) is retiring after over 30 years of service to the citizens of Coweta County through the Sheriff ’s Office. That’s 30 years or 3 decades! She began working back in August of 1983 as a ra-dio dispatcher for then-Sheriff Aaron Massey. Bray had since moved into the position of Clerk of the Courts Division which required working with civil process and sentences of the Superior Courts. The Coweta Shopper would like to say “Thank You” and congratulations on a job well done.

quent, I knew I was destined to try my hand at curing, smoking and glazing my own bacon.. Happy with my fi rst attempt, I’m already mak-ing notes to improve the next batch.

My fi rst process was curing the pork belly with equal parts sugar and salt. After three days of curing I soaked the thick slices in cool water; changing the salty water every ten minutes or so. The pork belly was then laid out on a wire rack to dry before placing it in a smoker with dry hickory chips for three hours. It was after a light smoking that I opted not to soak the wood.

Finally, I placed the bacon in a pan and lightly fried the strips with a glaze of cane syrup. That was it.

The strips were stored in the fridge until today when I pan-fried the bacon and biscuits in the same pan.

YUM and well worth the time and effort!

Walk With A Doc Piedmont Newnan Hospital and the Georgia Center for Healthier Communities partner for “Walk with a Doc” program, which begins March 22 at 8:30 a.m., with walks occurring the fourth Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. through August, with the exception of the month of May. Piedmont doctors will host each walk, lasting approximately 45 minutes, at Carl Miller Park, located at 70 Sewell Road in Newnan. Partici-pants will receive a pedometer to help them keep track of the number of steps taken. Doctors will take five minutes to talk on a health topic of their choice at the main pavilion at the park, and participants can ask questions freely for the remainder of the session. March 22 – Dr. John Vickery, Allergy & Immunology; Dr. Vickery sees children and adults for asthma, allergic diseases, and immunologic disorders. Registration is requested but not re-quired for this free event. LaToya B. Stephens, MD recently passed the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM)

certification exam for obesity medicine physi-cians and became certi-fied in the sub-speciality of obesity medicine. Dr. Stephens was one of only 158 physicians na-tionally who successfully

completed this year’s exam. “In our own state, the prevalence of adult obesity is 29.1 percent” said Dr. Stephens. “I am interested in being part of the solution to the medical epidemic by locally help-ing patients affected by obesity who seek access to safe evidence-based medical treatment.”

Dr. Stephens obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Georgia and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Morehouse School of Medi-cine. She completed residency training at Atlanta Medical Center and is a Board Certified Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gyne-cologists. She is active in the Newnan community and a member of various professional and social organizations. Dr. Stephens is also a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Last week, two venues in neighboring Fayette County announced lineups for their respective 2014 Summer Concert series. In Fayetteville, Southern Ground Amphitheater re-ported a five-concert lineup for the upcoming summer. It kicks off with Kansas on June 7, followed by Jefferson Starship on June 28, The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards on July 12, and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap on July 26. The finale is the Charlie Daniels Band on Aug. 9. In Peachtree City, the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphi-theater announced a five-concert lineup as well, plus it will add another show later in the summer. It starts on May 17 with Gladys Knight, followed by Bruce Horn-sby and the Noisemakers on June 21, the Beach Boys on July 12, Michael Bolton on July 26 and Arrival - the Music of ABBA on Aug. 2.
