Soup’s OnA hot idea on a cold day can be a cheese-topped onion soup.
(NAPS)—This onion soup, developed by Ja-net Zappala, certified nutri-tional consul-tant and author of “My Ital-ian Kitchen” ( w w w . j a n e t -zappala.com), is low in salt and fat but full flavored with Jarlsberg Lite,
a tasty, meltable, reduced-fat cheese.
Onion Soup, Serves 4
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil ¼ cup buttery spread (such as Earth Balance) 2 large yellow onions, sliced 11⁄2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 11⁄2 cups beef broth 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 Tbsp. low-sodium soy sauce ½ cup V8 juice ¼ cup port wine 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. black pepper 4 slices whole wheat baguette 4 slices Jarlsberg Lite cheese
Preheat oven to 350°. Heat olive oil and butter spread in large sauce pot over medium heat for 1 minute. Add onions, stir to combine. Sauté 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in chicken and beef broths, garlic and soy sauce. Reduce heat. Simmer 10 minutes. In-crease heat to medium and stir in V8 juice, wine, salt and pepper. Bring to boil before reducing heat. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. While soup simmers, arrange bread slices on baking sheet. Toast for 10 minutes. Remove toast from oven. Turn temperature to broil. Ladle soup into ovenproof bowls. Top each with slice of toast and cheese. Broil 2 minutes or until cheese melts. Serve immediately.

How to Cook - or NotFunny cook stories and Cooking Jokes

Nigel: “The two things I cook best are meat-loaf and apple pie.”
Sally: “Which is this?”
Michael has no talent for cooking. He has trouble with such simple tasksas peeling potatoes or slicing onions,
even though he often insists on helpinghis wife in the kitchen. Once he read
a shopping list on which Greta had writ-ten, ‘unhusked rice.’ “Good lord”, he sighed,
”what a job that’s going to be”.
How Bachelors Cook - or Not
Two confirmed bachelors sat talking. Their conversation drifted from politics
to cooking. “I got a cook book once”, said the first, “but I could never do anything with it.”
“Too much fancy cooking in it, eh?’” asked the second.
“You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way - ‘Take a clean dish and...’”
New Website Makes Finding Recipes And Meal Planning Easier

That’s good news for busy home chefs and those with food allergies and special diets to cook for or picky eaters to please; whether planning a mid-week meal or a festive holiday feast, it can be diffi-cult to find recipes that will please the whole table. Yummly is user friendly and is convenient to use on any computer or touch-pad device.

Publish and Share Recipe Favorites

The site, which is fully inte-grated with Facebook, also offers a variety of ways for people to save, share and e-mail recipes with friends and family.
Plan Weekly Meals or Dinner Party Menus
Users can now sort and save recipes into specified folders that will help in the planning and organi-zation of dinner parties, special events or weekly meals. Users can also share their menu ideas with friends, family or the website community.
Recipe Suggestions and Video Tutorials
Registered users can now receive recipe recom-mendations delivered right to their e-mail in-box-es. The site dispatches a weekly e-mail of seasonal recipe selections tailored to meet the food likes, dislikes and dietary specifications set in each user’s profile. The celebration of Christmas has now come and gone for yet another year. Children are playing with toys
and electronic games, and the older ones are enjoying their new clothes and cashing in the gift cards which are now so desirable. Others are waiting for the yearly after-Christmas sales which are so popular with both buyers and sellers. But there is one more item left on our agendas – the obligatory “New year’s Resolutions”. It seems that most of us resolve to do this or that in the coming year so that life will be much
better. However, there is sometimes not quite enough “Resolve” in our plans to carry us through to success. Are we really setting a goal, or just wishing?
Author Brian Tracy, says it this way: “Our ability to set goals, make plans, and take action on them, determines the course of our lives”. A goal (or reso-lution) without a plan for its accomplishment, within a specific time limit, is nothing more than a wish. You’ve probably heard the saying, “If we keep doing things the same way, we will continue to get the same results”. I, for one, want to get different results with some of my wishes this next year, and perhaps you do too, so let’s try this together.
A goal must be clear and it must be in writing
A goal must have a specific, organized plan for its accomplishment
A goal must have a time set for it’s completion
There is one other ingredient which must be mixed into the formula. Unless action is taken at the proper time, the above is no more than a slogan to be framed and hung on the wall with little or no results.
Let’s try using this approach in 2011. We are not guaranteed to fully reach all our goals this way, however, we will certainly have a much better chance. We can drift toward what we want to accomplish, or we can paddle in a pre-determined direction. I’m going shopping for a paddle next week, what about you?
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Practice fire safety - watch what you heat. ~Author Unknown
Citizens should be aware of the dangers of using heat lamps too close to combus-tible materials. You need to read, understand and follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions when using heat lamps or any other type of heating appliance. It is safer to bring pets inside during cold weather than to rely on a heat lamp or other portable heating devices to keep them warm outside.
Also everyone needs to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their home and to have a home fire escape plan with a meeting place and to prac-tice their home escape plan with all family members. Also if you have gas appliances, a wood burning stove or fireplace a carbon monoxide detector is rec-ommended.

Legal Briefs:
Bill Stemberger
Approximately 6,000 people will be injured in a Georgia trucking accident every year. The National Transportation Safety Administration conducted a study of causes of accidents involving large trucks. This study concluded that there were three (3) main critical events that cause truck wrecks:
• running out of the travel lane, either into the other lane or off the roadway (32 percent);
• vehicle loss of control due to speeding, cargo shift, vehicle system failure, poor road conditions, or other reasons (29 percent);
• rear-end collisions with another vehicle in the truck’s lane of travel (22 percent).
Factors that contribute to the above include badly maintained trucks, unsafe operation by the driver, inexperienced drivers, mechanical failure, and truck driver fatigue. Overloaded trucks are another cause of traffic collisions that make driving, controlling and breaking a truck even more difficult.
There are crucial differences between trucking cases and other motor ve-hicle collision cases. Interstate trucking is governed by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. These rules and regulations are much more complex than those for automobiles. Among the differences is the ability to directly involve the trucking insurance company in the legal action.
When involved in a trucking accident, it is important to scrutinize such areas as the hiring process, safety reviews, maintenance inspections, the number of hours the driver can drive safely, and alcohol or drug testing.
As with other wrecks, you can and should be fairly compensated for any injuries. Remember, time is of the essence when it comes to collecting all the information needed to successfully recover your damages.
If you have been in a truck or auto accident, and you have questions or concerns, please give us a call and we will be glad to help you. Stemberger & Cummins, Attorneys at Law – with over 50 years combined experience helping the injured and the innocent. Call today for your consultation.

BE CAR CARE AWARE: Winterizing Your Vehicle Can Save Cold Cash
(NAPSI)-Preparing your vehicle for rough weather should be a top priority to re-duce your risk of being out in the cold with the unexpected expense of emergency repairs.
“The thought of a breakdown, an engine not starting or otherwise being stranded is stressful as it is, but those things happening in freezing winter weather are extra stressful and costly,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “An in-vestment of an hour or two to have your vehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help avoid the cost and hassle of a breakdown.”
The council recommends the following steps:• Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.• Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.• Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.• Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem, con-sider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.• Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to a “winter weight” oil. Have your technician check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.• If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before cold magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.
• Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safe-ty item.• Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be espe-cially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.• Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and that headlights are properly aimed.
Motorists should also keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and any needed medication.
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, main-tenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s “Car Care Guide” or for more information, visit www.carcare.org. You can also call 240-333-1088.

Today’s Real Estate Market ~Price War and Beauty Contest!
By Nan Johnston Southern Staging & Redesign
The latest predictions of the upcoming housing mar-
ket are bleak, to say the least! That being said, buyers
are out there. How are you going to attract them to your
house over the thousands of others on the market?
A well-priced, well-presented home will still attract
buyers. Even in this troubled market, some houses in
our area have sold quickly and at close to the asking
price. If you are not the best looking house at the best
price, you are going to have to wait to sell.
Every listing is in a price war and a beauty contest.

AMERICA’S HEROES
Incredible OpportunitiesFor New Homes,
Low Mortgage Rates
(NAPSI)-When military heroes return home from the Middle East, they may find a completely changed housing landscape-which could be good news for them. In just the last two years, housing prices have plummeted, making homes more af-fordable than at any time in the last five decades. Now, mortgage rates have seen historic levels, bringing the American dream of home ownership to many.
Making matters better for returning armed ser-vice members is the benefit of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) loan, a special mortgage program offered exclusively to active and retired military service members as well as to the widows of those who gave their lives in service.
“VA loans are a very underused benefit of be-ing in the military,” said Jay Farner, president of Quicken Loans, the nation’s largest online lender. “With housing prices falling so significantly over the last two years, there is a great opportunity to purchase a home at incredibly affordable pric-es.”
VA loans are similar to a conventional mort-gage but have some very important flexibility. The program, which can be used to purchase as well as refinance a home, requires no down payment, offers relaxed credit score guidelines and allows loan fees to be rolled into the mortgage. In ad-dition, VA loans do not require mortgage insur-ance, a potentially costly expense regularly paid by homeowners with less than 20 percent equity in their homes.
The program has been a moderate success, with the Veterans Affairs office guaranteeing more than 14 million VA loans since the end of World War II. However, this represents only a fraction of those eligible to get the benefit.
“There are very few loan options available as flexible as the VA loan. Every veteran should at least investigate before buying or refinancing a home,” Farner added.
Several large lenders, including Quicken Loans, offer VA loans, and the Veterans Affairs office also offers information on the loan program.
Many Americans consider an affordable mort-gage the least the government can do to welcome home the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen.

What does your garden look like in winter? Does it have color, pat-
tern, texture, and interest? This is the perfect time of year to survey
the landscape and make plans for the coming Spring and Summer. It’s
also the perfect time to see the “bones” of your garden. The hardscap-
ing (fences, walls, arbors, etc.),
and trees, shrubs and water
features are clearly visible now.
Think of adding plantings for
winter interest.
The evergreen trees are so im-
portant now. Magnolia, Spruce,
Pine, Deodar Cedar, Leyland
Cypress and other evergreens
also have interesting pods and
cones as well as beautiful green
foliage. River Birch, Sycamore, and Crepe Myrtle have lovely exfoliat-
ing bark. Holly and Dogwood have great berries; so do viburnums and
nandina. Camellias offer a wide variety of blooms. Edgeworthia is a
fragrant winter must-have.
The dried blooms of Oakleaf
and Pee Gee Hydrangeas
look great, as well as the
dried grasses and sedum.
Shrubs that are evergreen
will add additional color
and texture. Aucuba, Yew,
Juniper, Lecothoe, Box-
wood, Anise, Gardenia and Osmanthus are excellent choices.
Fragrant blooming Winter Jasmine is such a delight on a bleak winter
day. A variety of Hellebores bloom in the winter. Annuals such as pan-
sies, violas, cabbage, and kale add color and texture. Rosemary adds
texture, fragrance and tiny blooms and evergreen color. Some nandi-
nas have wonderful bronze-red foliage. Harry Lauder’s walking stick is
a wonderful curving, twisting small tree. Variagated plants add color
and pattern (Yucca, Osman-
thus, Ivy, Acuba and Elae-
agnus).
Topiaries, statues, bird baths,
water features, fountains,
benches, birdhouses – all are
possibilities for adding inter-
est to the winter garden.
Make a plan. Add or eliminate
with a purpose. Visit plant nurseries for ideas and information.
Winter Interest
In The Garden
The Armchair GardenerThe Armchair GardenerThe Armchair GardenerThe Armchair Gardener“Nuisance Wildlife”Ms. Stephanie Ray
Butcher, Coweta County Extension Coordinator and Agent, will be the guest speaker for the January 2011 Backyard Association. Stepha-nie graduated from the
University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree in Animal and Dairy Science and a Masters Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Since join-ing Coweta County Extension in 2005, she has provided the community with a variety of educational programs.
Most of us enjoy watching wildlife in their native habitats. However, when wildlife starts encroaching upon our habitat it generally becomes a problem. Have you experienced squirrels in your attic, armadillos in your landscape, snakes in your basement or other nuisance wildlife trying to move into your space? If you want to learn more about how to control and discourage these animals, plan to join us on Tuesday, January 11th as Stephanie explains why they invade our space and how they can be controlled.
The Backyard Association is an educational program sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardeners. The presentations are free to the pub-lic and are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. This month’s presentation will be held at the Asa M. Powell, Sr. Expo Center lo-cated at 197 Temple Avenue in Newnan. Please call the Extension Office at (770) 254-2620 for reservations and to register for door prizes.
20 years of Green Tradition Continues With Christmas Tree
RecyclingGet your home back in order after
Christmas the easy and green way by re-cycling your live tree.
Keep Georgia Beautiful, The Home De-pot, The Davey Tree Company, 11-Alive, Earth911.com and Ferry-Morse Seed Co. have “chipped” in to sponsor the 2011 Bring One for the Chipper event.
The 20th year of the Bring One for the Chipper event invites Georgia residents to bring their trees to local drop-off centers. You can bring your tree to the recre-ation facility on Temple Avenue (the Old Fairgrounds) on the official “Bring One for the Chipper” day - January 8, 2011 from 9 am - 4 pm OR in Coweta County you can bring your tree to any of the county compactor sites from December 26, 3010 through January 11, 2011.
Check the hours of the 12 Coweta County compactors sites on the county website at http://www.coweta.ga.us/Index.aspx?page=368 - or just use the link from the home page.
According to the National Christmas Tree Association (www.realchristmastrees.org) 98% of real Christmas trees are grown on farms throughout all 50 states and Canada. Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource while artificial trees con-tain non-biodegradable plastics usually manufactured in China. On average, for each tree harvested, three seedlings are planted in its place. Chipper trees will be recycled into mulch for playgrounds, public beautification projects, wildlife habitat and homeowner landscaping projects. Mulched landscapes help absorb runoff and prevent erosion during times of heavy rainfall.
Event sponsors are proud to offer a token of appreciation for Georgia citizens that participate in the January 8th “Chipper” event. Coweta County 4-Hers will help distribute free vegetable seed packets for “treecycling” citizens. It’s a great oppor-tunity to plant a container garden at home or with your children, or save them for community or school gardening projects.

Natural Remedies To Relax Pets
(NAPSI) - You may be happy to see guests arrive at your front door, but the disruption in a pet’s schedule may cause him or her to become anxious and misbehave. Fortu-nately, there are ways you can help pets adjust to the change with minimal stress.
“Animals have complex feelings,” explains Mar-go Roman, DVM. “Pets can experience separa-tion anxiety, anger, fear, boredom, loneliness, jeal-ousy and other sophisticated emotions.”
Many pet parents turn to all-natural flower remedies such as Bach Original Flower Remedy Walnut and Rescue Remedy to help their pets adjust. Rescue Remedy Pet, known for its calming effect, can help pet parents treat their animal’s anxiety natu-rally. These remedies are easy, safe and effective ways to help furry and feathered friends ease into new and temporary situations. The remedies are available at Whole Foods and stores where natural products are sold.
You can learn more at www.rescueremedy.com/pets and (800) 319-9151.
