FALCUTY NEEDS FOR COURSE IMPLEMENTATION CLER MODEL AT WORK
The CLER model equation • Di = ƒ(C, L, E, R)• Di ≡ (diffusion of innovation) factors for
implementation• C ≡ (configuration) systems of interrelations
between the design sector and client sector• L ≡ (linkage) formal and informal connections
between designer organization and institution and sub-groups within both
• E ≡ environment for all interactions and relationships
• R ≡ resources (conceptual, influence, materials, personnel, institutional, and time)

Course in Secondary EducationChemistry Track
• Introductory survey course in secondary chemistry education• Course covers
– school policies and regulations– chemical safety regulations– classroom management techniques
• write an instructional objectives• write and implement a lesson plan
– instructional strategies• classroom strategies• dealing with multiple learning styles• filler activities• integrating instructional media in the classroom• classroom laboratory models
– evaluation techniques• evidence of student learning• valid assessment of student learning• institutional assessment of learning

Linkages
• All institutions or organization have formal relationships or links within and between people.– President to Provost– President to ID with the design group– Provost to VP or Dean
• Institutions or organizations can also have informal relations which aid the project implementation.– The mother of the President of the design group
personally knows a trustee of the institution– The instructional designer and the chemistry chair are
know each other through membership in the American Chemical Society (ACS)

Environment
• Positive and productive aided by informal and formal linkages.
• Validation all the major players concerns• Faculty Group
– Discuss concerns and reservations– Reassurance from other faculty & ID– Network administrator and other technical staff meets to
answer question– Online training is easily accessed
• All major player must “Buy-in” to the project at this point

Personnel
Faculty Needs- Minimum Resources
• List requirements for the following resources:– Personnel
• Network Administrator• Network Engineer• Help Desk staff to answer questions about new innovations• Support staff for different portions of implementation (distribution of course materials) • Technology support staff • Design team• Recruitment Personnel
– Conceptual• The organization must have a way which faculty can get training for implementation of new technologies.
Faculty must feel they have direct contact with ID and ID team. Faculty already has expertise with Microsoft Office including power point. Train already available with Director 8 which mean relative easy transition to Flash, so the faculty feels.
– Influence• Incentives
– Overtime pay to staff– Bonus to faculty involved– Reduced workload for instructors involved as SME
– Time• Adequate time for implementation of high quality course• Time to learn how to author and each online
Faculty Needs- Minimum Institutional Resources
• Online Infrastructure – Most important is security system (Microsoft SQL security)– Access to internet and intranet– Listserv (e-mail client- subscriber to the list)– Security for student information is one of the most import parts of the infrastructure.– Digital Library Center is among the top 10. Smaller colleges and universities can join
together to offset cost. Funding is available- Electronic document Service is very important.
– Server– Advanced Web Site with Quick time and real Media– Computer Conferencing (Client software)– Learning Management system (i.e. eCollege)
• Finances– Provide sufficient money for the project
• Promotion– Advertising for course
Note: all is available for the instructor through Keystone University Network of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education

Faculty Needs- Minimum Materials Resources
• Computers• Software
– Software application (Adobe professional, Flash, Quick time and real Media etc)
– Software application (made by university)• Books• Media Equipment
– Video camera– Digital camera– VCR
• Distribution– Packaging of print and CD-ROM– Copying of print and CD-ROM– Storage facilities for print and CD-ROM until shipped to students– Shipping of both print and CD-ROM

Faculty Needs Points
• With the needs below meet the course is ready for implementation
C ≡ Configuration
L ≡ Linkage
E ≡ Environment
R ≡ Resources
Good relations and connections promoting a positive environment
Positive atmosphere is essential
The major resources are material, intuitional and time. The other resources deal with empathy or attitude- the “Buy –in “
