Hi! It’s been a little more than 3 months since I joined the Woodmore Family! It has been such a pleasure meeting so many veteran members and having the honor of welcoming so many new members to the Country Club at Woodmore. And who better to enjoy membership at Woodmore than your family, friends, and colleagues…. Hence, the 2013 Member Sponsor Society Program was created! Upon referring new members, you could potentially reduce your monthly dues, receive exclusive monthly discounts, and even qualify for an all expense paid trip to Amelia Island!!! If you would like to know how to become a member of the Woodmore Sponsor Society, please feel free to contact me for details.

We would like to welcome these New Members to The Country Club of Woodmore…

If I can be of any assistance to you regarding your membership, please don’t hesitate to call me 301 249-8589. Or feel free to stop by and say hello any time Tuesday – Saturday 8:30 – 5:30.Hope you are having a terrific summer!

When our short game ‘goes away’ and we lose confidence, we tend to rely too heavily on the putter from off the green to get us out of trouble. Especially during the

winter months when the ground is wet, it rarely pays off. Now is the time to start experimenting with medium

irons around the greens. The 5 – 9 iron have enough loft to lift the ball on to the green and get it rolling, so grip down the club with a putting grip, hands slightly ahead of the ball and with a slightly open stance, make a firm

stroke with you big muscles such as your shoulders (don’t get loose with your hands).

Respectfully Submitted,John Kauzlarich

The Tennis Beatby John Fears, Director of Tennis USPTA

Salutations to all members. On behalf of the Club’s management and staff, we wish to extend our gratitude for your patronage and support during the 2013 season. There are only two months of play until the end of the 2013 tennis season. And what a season it has been!

The courts have never looked and played better since my tenure began here over sixteen years ago. Many visitors to the tennis center, members and guests have stated often, how beautiful the place appears. Kudos to the tennis staff and to the greens staff for their assiduity in maintaining the delightful ambiance of the tennis center and courts throughout the season.

As for play, we had an increase in the number of events held and players playing on the courts. Starting back in May we recruited nine teams in the men’s double ladder. They played on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. This program will be completed during the second week of August.

In June we had an USTA event, the Maryland Senior Clay Court Championship. To qualify for the event, you have to be 70 years or older and a USTA member.

It was entertaining and insightful to watch these veterans play the game. If you missed this event, fear not, for this sage group will return during the last week of September. At this event the oldest category of players will be in their nineties. Keep checking our bulletins.

It was 96 degrees in the shade, yes really, really hot!! Ah, the playing of tennis during the month of July. We hosted the Mall Tournament, a USTA event, that started over 50 years ago on the Mall in Washington, D.C. This is our seventh season hosting this great event that attracts nationally-ranked players. Reggie Robinson, my assistant pro, advanced to the final round of the open (age) category, a category where you have just have to be 18 or older. Congratulations Reggie!

Finally, we have a significant increase in the number of guests who have participated in our clinics and programs throughout the season.

Please don’t miss out on the fun of movement

in playing the game of tennis. We can design a game for every level of skill or play. Please call the tennis center at 301-390-0937 if you have questions or inquiries, or stop by on a Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and sign up for a free clinic. We look forward to seeing you there.

The down the “T” and body serves are the most important serves in doubles, since the height of the net is lower in the middle, these serves should improve your first serve percentage. Most important, serves hit to these spots take away angles from the returner. This gives your partner more chances to poach and allows you to serve and volley without having to stretch and dive for wide angle shots. It’s a good idea to mix in a wide serve every once in a while to keep your opponents off-balance, but don’t worry about being too predictable on your serve in doubles. If you hit these two spots consistently and with depth, your opponents won’t be able to pass you. See you on the courts. (Tip given by Katrina Adams, former WTA player.)

Greetings from the Green Department. I am writing this update during our longest, strongest heat wave of the season. We are in the middle of weather pattern that has given us highs in the mid-nineties and lows in the mid-seventies for seven straight days. These periods put a severe amount of stress on the Poa annua that is the primary turf on most our putting surfaces. Whenever we experience a stretch like this, the most common question that I get from the membership is about reduced green speeds.

During these periods, it is necessary for our staff to practice “defensive management” of the greens surfaces. This includes raising mowing heights, reducing mowing frequency, reducing topdressing frequency, and syringing the turf surface to reduce heat stress. These practices may result in a temporary reduction of green speeds and while we always strive to provide the membership with great conditions, our first goal has to be maintaining the long-term health of the golf course. The alternative is large scale turf loss and green closure while the greens are being re-established.

For the most up to date information on the golf course you can always visit our blog at www.ccwoodmoregcm.com
