Only a few years ago we pub-lished our upcoming events inthe Corinthian and maybe sent apress release to the local pa-pers. Today technology is allow-ing us to reach the public in a

variety of ways. Although theGreece Historical Society does not“tweet” or “text,” we have instituted new ways tocommunicate our programs and events besidesthis newsletter. We now send out monthly e-mailblasts to everyone who has given us their e-mailaddress. We have created a Facebook page andwe seem to be adding new “friends” every week.Several local history blogs are beginning to addour content to their pages and the RochesterRegional Library Council informs all Librarians in

our area about our programs. We have also had aweb site for several years. These initiatives havehelped increase attendance at our programs andvisitors to our museum but we still need you! Yes,YOU are our best advertisement. Tell your friendsabout us. We are the organization in theTown of Greece that saves our past for the future.Thank you for your support.

In the past couple months we have taken the

Historical Society on the road with programs atthe Greece Library and the local AARP, and hadan information booth at River Romance. We havepublished a booklet on the history of NorthgatePlaza and we are now working with a local retire-ment community to develop programs for them.We met with the new director of Social Studies forthe Greece Central School District and in Septem-ber began collaborating with the Parma-HiltonHistorical Society on a proposed project next yearinvolving several western Monroe County histori-

cal societies. Several of our volunteers have at-tended a seminar on policy development and aclass on publishing local history and our historian,Alan Mueller also attended the GovernmentAppointed Historians of Western New Yorkannual meeting.

Kathie Firkins, Tour Director and Education Consultant

The Girl Scouts and Civil War displays continue to be of high interest with people stopping in every Sundjust to see those areas. On Sunday Sept. 9th we had a group of Girl Scouts come in specifically to see whinformation we had. They had never been to our museum before and were amazed at what we had to fer. They ended up staying for a complete tour of our facility. On Fri. Oct. 12th we were the first stop foLeadership Training group. There were 9 participants from various businesses in Greece. Bill explained

history of our organization and the house with Alan and Kathie giving tours in the museum. As usual Lewas on hand with her wonderful expertise in being able to answer any questions.

I would like to introduce and welcome our newest volunteer: Mr. Dennis Ruger. Dennis lives in Greeceand comes to us with high interest in history of the town.

 ----

We are pleased to have with us anthropologist, George Hammel, the Native AmericanCollection manager of the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

He will bring rare artifacts from Greece’s early Iroquois fishing and hunting summer camps. Storyteller Barbara Bethman-Mahooty will engage us with Seneca tales and

Robert Dobson will bring photos and artifacts from his family farm, which is now Northgate Plaza.

The Greece Historical Society owns and maintains the Greece Historical Center and Museum at 595 LonPond Rd. We lease the land the house sits on, located on the north east corner of the Greece Town Capus. We are grateful for the superb job the staff of the Town D.P.W. does on the campus which includecutting the grass around the museum and especially for the recent improvements and enlargement of

the parking lot adjacent to the museum. Thanks for a great job!

We are looking for someone willing to volunteer theirtime to clear our sidewalks in the winter. We have an

excellent snow blower on site and would need thesidewalks clear of snow any time there is a significant snowfall.

If you are willing to volunteer your time please call Bill at 225-3760.

Our Pastperfect Museum Software is waiting for eager hands to enter the informationabout the artifacts in the Society’s collection. It is an easy, user friendly program. If you like antiques, this will be a fun project.

Clerking in the gift shop is an opportunity to meet new people, helping guestschoose a gift of history for someone on their Christmas list, along with greeting visitors and directingthem to the museum. Volunteers usually work one Sunday afternoon (from 1:15 to 4:00 p.m.) a monthor every other month. Plus, you can browse our books.

Filing, answering the phone, typing letters, helping with the newsletter mailing,

just typical office work. It never ends! You would be doing the Society a great service if you could woron a Tuesday or Wednesday morning from 9:30 to noon once a week or as little as once a month.

1. Historic property map. 2,3. Recent pictures of the Ivins home and barn.4.The Ivins Clock.

The Ogee veneered case, weight driven shelf clock recently found its way back toGreece and will now be a permanent part of our museum artifact collection. Manufac-tured prior to the early 1870s by the William L. Gilbert Clock Co. of Winchester CT, theoriginal owner was George Snowhill Ivins of North Greece, a blacksmith.

Several weeks ago a descendent of Mr. Ivins visited our museum with a small binder ogenealogy information on some of theearly families of Greece: the Ivins, Bridge-man, Barnes and Brown families. It wascasually mentioned that he had a clock inhis car that he thought we might like tohave for our collection. The photo is theclock he had brought with him. It has re-sided in numerous locales, including the

west coast and, in recent years, in centralNew York State. It is not very often an ob- ject is offered for our collection that hassuch a strong provenance linking it to anearly Greece family. The next time you visitthe museum and wander into our muse-um shop, glance to the left as you enterthe living room. There on the glass frontbookcase is the Ivins family clock, enjoyingits retirement years, just a few miles from

its original home on North Greece Rd.
