➢ Emission factors based on pilot NFI and other plot data in collaboration
with the University of Suriname, CELOS and CATIE;
➢ NFI in Mangrove including “blue carbon” and biodiversity assessments by
multiple institutions;
➢ Harmonize NFI protocol in Amazon region.
NFMS – National Forest Inventory
NFMS – National Forest Inventory- Mangrove forest
Categories blue carbon pool
1. The living, aboveground biomass of red, black and white
mangroves;
2. The non-living, aboveground biomass of standing dead
mangroves;
3. Soil carbon pool.

Fieldwork parameters:
- Tree tagging
- DBH measurements >= 10 cm
- Tree height estimation
- Tree health and stem quality estimates
- Dead wood measurements
- Regeneration
- Soil sampling
- Pneumatophores sampling
- Camera trap placement
- Bird watching

NFMS – National Forest Inventory- Mangrove forest
Biodiversity measurements:- Mammals: measured through cameratraps- Birds: line transect (by sight and by hearing) - Floristic: by observations and measurements of abundance

Results: Mangrove forest cover using remote sensing
Dynamical coastal process of mangrove increment and decrement● Linked to the ca. 33-year mudflow cycle (Anthony, 2010;
Augustinus,1980)
● Coastal instability due to trade-wind generated waves (Walcker, 2010)
● Coastline behaviour differs depending on the locations (de Jong, 2015).

Status NDC for Suriname➢ Suriname delivered an INDC in 2015➢ No mitigation targets formulated yet➢ Suriname is in the process of developing a NDC:
Stakeholders consultations are ongoing at the moment➢ The mangrove forest can be seen as a mitigation as well as
an adaptation strategy. ○ Mitigation: Suriname is a HFLD country (93% forest cover)○ Adaptation: Suriname is also a low-lying country vulnerable for
the impacts of sea level rise. Protection of the mangrove is an adaptation strategy

Next steps
- Biomass mapping - carbon mangrove forest cover;
- Mangrove specific allometric research;
- Update the mangrove carbon stock in FREL;
- Learn from other countries in order to produce BC NDC for
Suriname.
