A national search was conducted, 35 candidates considered, 5 candidates were interviewed via skype, finalists brought in and introduced to staff and then fi- nally face-to-face interviews of the candidates by the Board before a decision was made. We have been very intentional about the arrival of Carolyn Goolsby as the new Director. And there continues to be plans unfolding to ensure that Carolyn has a supported and smooth transition so that Carmel continues to have a first-class library serving our community. The Indiana United Methodist Conference has recognized that many churches, particularly larger church- es, are in need of some restructuring of the individual church governance model to alleviate the challenges of disconnected communication, slow decision making processes, a lack of clarity of the responsibilities of leadership roles, and inefficient meetings. The Church Council and I have heard from the Conference Church Development person and have moved toward a restructuring of Carmel UMC’s current model to a single governance model. This will move the work of all the governing bodies, trustees, finance, and staff parish into one body to again address the above challenges. At the September 21st 6:30 meeting of the Church Council a vote will be taken to affirm this transition and immediately following the vote, the newly structured board will meet (only Church Council members hold a vote). Starting in the fall of 2016, we will be accepting applications from church members who would be interest- ed in serving at this level of church operations. We will post those times and the process on the website, share in The Contact and in a church announcements when the time approaches. All persons serving will continue to serve 3 year terms as has always been the case. This transition follows the guidelines of The Book of Discipline, the UMC guidelines, as well as drawing on wisdom from other churches who have made this transition. There are always some uncertainties with transition but as a team we are already working to make this a “smooth transition” so that we may best serve the mission and vision of Carmel UMC. A Look Ahead in the Sanctuary and in The Stream:
Smooth Transitions
For five years I have served on the Board of Trustees of the Carmel Clay Library. This last year much of the Board’s attention was spent ensuring a smooth transi-tion as Wendy Phillips having served as Director of the Library for 15 years was retiring. A national search was conducted, 35 candidates considered, 5 candidates were interviewed via skype, finalists brought in and introduced to staff and then fi-
nally face-to-face interviews of the candidates by the Board before a decision was made. We have been very intentional about the arrival of Carolyn Goolsby as the new Director. And there continues to be plans unfolding to ensure that Carolyn has a supported and smooth transition so that Carmel continues to have a first-class library serving our community.
The Indiana United Methodist Conference has recognized that many churches, particularly larger church-es, are in need of some restructuring of the individual church governance model to alleviate the challenges of disconnected communication, slow decision making processes, a lack of clarity of the responsibilities of leadership roles, and inefficient meetings.
Starting in the fall of 2016, we will be accepting applications from church members who would be interest-ed in serving at this level of church operations.

Each year during September, we begin by having a short class about the Bible for our second graders and their parents. However, some folks are not a part of the Church until their kids are 3rd or 4th graders. If you are in that category, please consider joining us for the Bible class on September 20 at 9:30am. Then we will present the Bibles to the kids at the two 11am services in the Sanctuary or the Stream service, you may choose. Please let me know you will be participating so that I can make sure I have enough Bibles and educational materials: [email protected] CUMC current 5th graders when they were in 2nd grade!
Want to know more about the Bible? Want to get to know others from Church? Here are just two of the many options for you in September.
September 10 begins the Moms Bible study. We study the same lesson, in adult form that our kids will learn on the following Sunday. This way, you will be prepared to answer some of the hard questions your child may ask! We meet for a short time and their is no homework. All are welcome.
Sticky Faith is one of the theologies Children’s Ministry at CUMC embrac-es, the premise is that the Church along with families need to implore cer-tain strategies so that when kids leave the nest that their commitment to Christ sticks with them. Now, that may seem a long way off, but as a moth-er of 3 grown children, it was just yesterday they were all in Kindergarten! One way is for kids to feel a part of the larger worshipping community and not to just be with kids but to be included in the church as a whole. We have loved having the kids in the 9:30am worship service, it has worked in the Stream for years. So, we are continuing kids beginning in the Sanctuary and then leaving for Sunday School after the children’s moment. Kids be-gan in their new Sunday School classes on August 30. The following is a
typical schedule for Sunday School at 9:30am:
9:30-9:45 sanctuary
9:45-10:30 Sunday School classrooms
10:30-10:45 5th graders remain in class. (This is in preparation for 6th grade confirmation where they will go until 11am)
On Sunday evenings, beginning September 13 at 6pm, a new Bible study will begin
especially designed for parents of any age child from toddler to teen and in between.
We will be studying "Oh the Places They Go" by Dr. Seuss and John Ortberg from
Right Now Media. There is childcare and coincides with the m&m Music and Missions
offered for children!!!!

Music, under the direction of Nathan Hood:
Carmel United Methodist offers a comprehensive choir pro-gram for children from age four through 5th grades. The Chil-dren’s Music Program is designed to encourage children to grow in faith, serve in worship and praise through song.
Singing provides the foundation for all of our children’s choirs. Part of every rehearsal is spent learning new songs, reviewing
favorite songs and in the younger choirs, playing singing games. Our goal is to help each child find his or her own unique voice. We believe the ability to “sing your praise” helps children express their faith and share in the joy of worship.
Children in choir also play rhythm instruments and participate in movement activities. They learn new mu-sical and social skills, sing during worship services and they may participate in programs like the Children’s Christmas Play and others. Our goal is each choir will sing at least two times a year in a worship service.
Choir will meet on Sunday evenings, in the choir room in the basement and participants must register and commit to the entire semester. There is no cost at this time but t-shirts may be ordered at a later date.
6:00-6:25 1st to 3rd grade
6:30- 6:50 4 yrs to Kindergarten
7-7:30 4th and 5th graders.
Missions:
Each week kids 1st through 5th grade will meet to discuss missions and work on projects together. This Mission Club will include Bible memorization, ideas to do mission projects and character building. Each time a child does 5 hours of service to one of the following and scripture memory, they will earn a charm.
Purpose: To grow disciples of Jesus Christ through service
TRADITIONAL SERVICES: Add you voice to the Carmel UMC Music Ministry! Join the Chancel Choir and/or ring with the Sanctuary Handbells. The new season begins with Wednesday rehearsals on Sep-tember 9th: Handbells @ 6:30pm and Choir @ 7:30pm. This is a great way to connect and serve as and praise God through music!
THE STREAM WORSHIP BAND: Steve Baker, Stream Worship Leader, is wanting to know if anybody is interested in sharing their God given talents in the following ways for the Stream Service:
Male or Female Vocals
Instruments: Guitar, Bass, Drums, keyboard or any instrument
Technology: Running the Sound Board, Lights or Video
At Carmel UMC we are connecting with God and others, growing in faith and love through Biblical learning, and serving our community and world as followers of Jesus Christ.
