The Federal government is requiring all Hospitals to submit a plan for the reduction of these infections by the end of this year. ASHRAE and the CDC recognize Laminar Air Flow systems as an effective method of reducing the incident of sepsis which is a main contributor to these infections. An airflow management strategy utilizing a Laminar Flow system must be evaluated for incorporation into any HAI reduction plan. This evaluation should include ICRA as well as a detailed cost/benefit analysis. Architectural ceiling systems utilizing a modular installation approach can be a cost effective and time saving method of providing a laminar flow system. Presenter: Kevin J Schreiber is Director of Sales for Huntair, Inc. in Tualatin Oregon. He has been involved with engineering systems for critical environments since 1988. He is an ISPE member, an ASHE Certified Contractor and also the inventor and patent holder of several products including DataPAK®, CleanCube® and CLEANSUITE®. His responsibilities with Huntair include supporting architects, engineers, specification writers, owners and others in the Healthcare industry with technical assistance, product education and training on the proper application of laminar flow air distribution systems. Participant Learning Objectives: • Gain an understanding of the problems that Hospitals face. • Learn how a Laminar Air Flow system can address infection spreading issues. • Gain a better understanding of how a Laminar Air Flow system works. • Learn how a modular Laminar Air Flow system can save time and money.

We are approaching the fiftieth anniversaryof thepublicationof twoseminaldocumentsfortheconstructionindustry:“ATentativeProposalforaManualof Practicefor Specification Writing Methods”, and“TheCSIFormatforBuildingSpecifications.” The first led to the publication of CSI’s first Manual of Practice(eventuallybecomingtheProjectResourceManual),thesecondtoMasterFormat.
AlthoughMasterFormatismorewidelyknownandused,theoriginalManualof Practice(MOP)embodiedtheessenceof CSI’sraisond’être-clearcommunicationinconstructiondocuments.AlongwithMasterFormat,theMOPprovidedimpetusforCSI’sgrowththroughtheendof thetwentiethcentury,asdesignprofessionalsacrossthecountrysought to improve their specifications. Despiteitsrelativeobscurity,Ibelievethe MOP’s significance was second onlytoMasterFormatandAIA’scontractdocumentsintheworldof buildingconstruction.
In1947,thefoundersof theConstruction Specifications Institute expressed five goals for the new organization:

documents,includingthoseforseveralbuildingsbuiltinthelatenineteenthcentury.Eventhatfarback,mostof theprojectmanualsIlookedatwerewellorganizedandeasytointerpret.However,bycurrentMOPstandards,they had a number of deficiencies.
Documentorganizationwasnotuniversal.Thelocationof similarinformationvariedfromoneprojectmanualtothenext, sometimesevenwhentheprojectmanualswereproduced in the same office. Also, therewassometendencytowardstreamof consciousnessspecifying. The specifications might start with masonry, goontocarpentry, returnbriefly to masonry to specify mortar, andsoon.
The1964publicationof “TheCSIFormatforConstructionSpecifications” marked the beginning of amovetowardstandardorganizationof information.Today’snearlyuniversalacceptanceof MasterFormatclearlymakesiteasiertoprepareandinterpretconstructiondocuments.
You likely learned the first from your parents, thoughtheyprobablysaid“Aplaceforeverythingandeverythinginitsplace.”IndocumentsthatcomplywiththeMOP,everyrequirementisstated in a specific location, which makesiteasierforboththewriterand
Standardization of Specifications for Public WorksThefoundingmemberswere, accordingtoCSI,primarily“architectural specifications chiefs fromvariousgovernmentagencies”who“discussedproblemsthatresultedfromnon-uniformconstructiondocumentpolicies.”Wemustadmiretheiraudacityinsettingstandardizationof publicworksspecifications as a goal. Had they beensuccessfulwewouldenjoythebenefits of standard specification formatandcontentthroughoutthecountry, and neither specifiers nor bidderswouldhavetotrytopuzzleoutwhateachgovernmentagencyistryingtosay.Unfortunately, thisgoalhasnotbeenachieved, and, despitealltheimprovementsthathaveresultedfromCSI’sstandardsinotherareas, governmentagenciesremaintheworstviolatorsof theprinciplesestablishedbytheManualof Practice.
