...at our front Tower?
The east side of the tower is above with a close up of the current condition of the east side louvers and vaults.
Section of 1919 blueprints of the tower section by famous Architect Harry Barton
In just a few years, the front tower of our building will have overlooked Tate and Spring Garden Streets for 100 years. Our church’s historic tow-ers have greeted years of progress and modernization, thousands of people have gazed upwards to the heavens following our 72 foot tower.
With all of our current modern elec-tronics and conveniences, we still wonder how the forefathers and foremothers of our congregation were able to have such an inspiring edifice constructed long ago.
However, if you’ve driven down Spring Garden or Tate St and looked up at the tower, you might notice that the wooden louvers and vault (the top, decorative wooden arch) are weather worn. No one can recall the last time it was painted. It needs repair and painting in order to con-tinue its work for the ministries of College Place’s congregation.
To learn more about what’s planned to care for the tower into the future, look at the reverse side of this sheet.
ENABLING THE FUTUREENABLING THE FUTUREENABLING THE FUTUREENABLING THE FUTURE
To Maintain and Improve
Work is already underway on the tower. In fact, if weather and schedules go ac-cording to plan the south tower louvers and vault will be reinstalled this Friday. We’ll be able to see improvement already on the parking lot side. While you may only be able to see a paint job from the street, there has been much preparation over the past two weeks.
Here’s what is happening:
◊ The louvers were cut out from the south side frames and the vaults removed.
◊ The removed parts were taken to a workshop in Southern Pines where the old lead paint was removed and boiled linseed oil was applied to the pieces to rejuvenate the old growth pine wood.
◊ The old paint was removed and the surface of the frames and molding was prepared while remaining in the tower.
◊ The louvers and vaults are primed and painted in the workshop and then returned to the tow-er.
◊ A new “rack system” will be installed in the frames enabling future maintenance to happen from inside the tower at a fraction of the cost of outside scaffolding. The system will not change appearance of the tower louvers.
◊ The vaults and louvers will be reinstalled and the contractors will move to the next section and then repeat the process tower until all four sides are complete.
Three louvers in various states: Center: louver just out of the frame with old paint. On right side: paint stripped
off louver and linseed oil applied. On the left side: a primed and painted louver ready for reinstallation.
Before and after pictures of the center south vault. It is made of
eight pieces of wood and no one is sure it could be remade today. It’s part of the beauty of our building’s
exterior. You can help our congregation
prepare for the future.
Of course a project that both preserves and protects the woodwork in our tower like this doesn’t come without cost. The total estimated cost for the whole project is over $18,000. Yes, a huge sum for one person, but shared among our members and friends, this project is more than manageable for our congregation. If you would like to help make this project complete, please consider a gift - either small as one dollar or as large as $18,000 - indicate tower on your gift. Together we can help ensure a place of ministry for many years to come. If you have questions, you may contact our Trustees, Chairperson Brian Baker, Dennis Farlow, & Lynette Sicola or Pastor Jason.
