The Conflict Diamonds
By: Joao, Tom and Ryan
What are Conflict Diamonds?
They’re better known as Blood Diamonds, and are rough diamonds mined in
conflict zones
When originally mined, they look like this
They are used mainly to fuel armed rebel
groups
Groups like these are armed and extremely dangerous
Conflict diamonds are found in areas
like:
Sierra Leone
Angola
The Democratic Republic of Congo
These rebel groups fight against each other
causing hundreds of civilian casualties with the government also
getting involved
Do you think it’s fair that this girl has to cry, that she has
to suffer for the death of her
parents, who died during a war
between rebel groups?
The rebels force men, women and children
to work sifting for diamonds. They beat
the men and even rape the women
Rebels even cut off limbs from certain
workers who refused to work, and to “teach
them a lesson”
This man mourns over his lost hand
And the look in this young man’s eyes can
tell you everything that he’s been through
This needs to be stopped immediately. People like us
just can’t sit and let this happen to innocent people
But what can I do?
The least we can do, is to check if a diamond is conflict free whenever one is bought
Do it for those who are affected, do it for the world…..
