WEST END WILDCATS PERFORM TO THOUSANDS AT ROYAL
ALBERT HALLOn Sunday 8 April, 54 children from Stamford and Peterborough took to London to perform in one of the country’s most prestigious theatres.
The West End Wildcats are 54 children aged 5-18 years who are part of Wildcats Theatre School. They have already picked up numerous awards and accolades for their performances which combine originality and quality with inclusion and enjoyment, where every child is given an opportunity to shine and perform to the best of their abilities.
So far they have scooped the winners trophy at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London in a competition in January 2011 and were runners up in the grand final in December 2011. Alongside performing in London they have showcased their work locally at events and festivals and are booked to perform at Stamford Festival this June.
After months of preparation the Wildcats travelled to London on Sunday to perform a dance routine to a medley from ‘Dreamgirls’.
Long before barbed wire and netting, the technique of hedge-laying was
developed to create a living barrier to enclose farm animals. Left to grow
unhindered, hedges can become gappy at the bottom, and invasive shrubs
such as elder, brambles and ivy can take over. Hedge-laying encourages
the development of shoots from the base so that the hedge forms a dense
barrier. This is good for beneficial insects, which in turn attracts birds and
small mammals. Work is undertaken during the winter months when the
hedge is dormant and wildlife are less
likely to be disturbed.

STAMFORD SHOESTRING
THEATREStamford Shoestring Theatre’s summer delight is a first for the company: an Australian play, Life After George, by award-winning writer Hannie Rayson.
Peter George, charismatic academic, class warrior and lover, is dead. Attempting to work together to arrange his funeral, his three wives and daughter are forced to confront many uncomfortable insights about themselves and their lives both in and out of his shadow. From the student unrest in the late 60’s to the rampant consumerism of the 90’s, the play is a witty, wry and perceptive look at social changes.

particularly enjoyed the operating theatre and encouraged families to visit the newly refurbished museum as a way to engage children in their local history.
CHRIS PORSZThe current exhibition featured in the gallery is by local photographer, Chris Porsz. Chris’ work will be on display until 18 May.
An age heralded as liberating female fashion - with shorter-hemlines, figure-hugging fabrics, outfits that did not discriminate against size, and that certain je ne sais quoi that has since characterized the notion of elegance and sophistication – the 1950s are once again embracing the catwalks with models sashaying down the runways at Jill Sander, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, to name but a few.
Yet, looking back at fashion trends, it appears that many styles have never truly left our fashion-consciousness.
The chemise dress was, and still remains, the epitome of feminine class. Straight cut and without a defined waist, it allowed the woman to decide what part of her waist she wanted to define by tying the dress with a belt, thereby being a style that would flatter most figures. Marks and Spencer’s and Warehouse have recently produced a range of chemise dresses in everything from oriental to candy-stripe prints, and at reasonable prices.
Fur also became a status symbol in the 50s, but as it was only affordable for the rich, a whole new enterprise for imitation fur opened up to cater to the increasing demand.
Alongside this, animal print became increasingly fashionable, the long-lasting popularity of which can still be seen in the tribal fashion trends each summer. Other prints which made a statement in the mid-century, but which still remain are checks and florals; tartan and gingham are still hugely popular (Topshop and New Look have reinvented them to form their current interpretation of the ‘Grunge’ trend in the form of shirts, skirts and summer shorts) and floral prints remain a huge thumbs-up on any style meter.
The 1940s and 50s redefined fashion in a revolutionary way which is still being seen today; on the high street, Topshop, River Island and Marks and Spencer’s have their fingers on the fashion button with cigarette pants, pencil skirts, round-neck blouses in pretty pastels (a la ‘Grease: The Movie’) and cocktail dresses to die for. For a real taste of the 50s, though, check out ‘Vivien of Holloway’ online which stocks amazingly beautiful 50s-style dresses. So, this season, embrace your inner glamour-puss, pour yourself a Manhattan, and remember: vive la 50s!

The salon décor was beautiful and relaxing, I
thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious massage pedicure

began. The 75 minute treatment includes; soak,
cuticle work, lower leg exfoliation, hard skin removal,
lower leg and foot massage and a file and shape
with gel toes. There was such a huge collection of
the colour gels I found it hard to choose, after much
debate I went with the gold sparkle gel. My feet felt
smooth and my toes looked amazing and it lasts 6-8
weeks. I’ll definitely go back again...

It’s May and officially the beginning
of summer, time to get those little
dresses out of the closet - which
also means getting your legs out too.
After they have been hidden away for
so many months, it seems cruel to
expose them to the elements.
To be sure you feel confident about
showing them off to the unsuspecting
world, you really should opt for a
spray tan..... a spray tan gives you
enough colour to take away the bluish
tinge and makes you look healthy and
radiant.
Essence of Beauty in Stamford have
bought in an exclusive brand of instant
spray tan called Karora, which is
available in selected London Salons.
Karora is made from natural and
organic ingrediants, it gives a rich
golden tan that is long lasting and has
a perfect fade without the awful faux
tan smell. It has moisturising and skin
firming qualities, amazing aromatic
melon and sweet orange fragrance
but none of the harmful parabens,
chemicals and synthetic dyes and
best of all it is cruelty free.

Garden SceneBy Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com
A gentle month I’ve always felt, the last days of spring. But beware if the last few years are anything to go by, May can have a sting in its delicate tail in the form a late frost or two. So a little caution may be prudent when deciding when to hang out your hanging baskets or plant out those tomatoes.
JOBS FOR THE MONTH
HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTYHOME & GARDEN
Dear Joe of Gardenwise,
I have started working on my garden for the Summer, but with the hosepipe ban in force I am concerned about what new plants or shrubs I should pick.
From Katie, Lincolnshire
Dear Katie,
With the threat of hosepipe bans, and successive dry seasons you are right
to be considering how to adapt to dry conditions and the sensible decision
is to think about choosing more drought tolerant plants for you garden.
To give any new planting a good chance of settling in well, make sure they
get well watered in immediately after planting and mulch the new plantings
to seal in any moisture.
First understand your gardens situation, its aspects, pH and soil type, so
you can pick plants that are suited to your garden. When choosing plants
that will cope better with a dry summer you could consider plants that
originate from areas of low rain fall for example the Mediterranean or New
Zealand but check that are also hardy to our cold winters - like Lavenders,
Phlomis, Olearia’s, and Eryngium. Colour can be gained from the use
of annuals like Californian poppy (Escholtzia), Love-in-a Mist, (Nigella
damascena) and corn flower (Centaurea). Evergreen shrubs, with their
waxy moisture retaining leaves are also worth considering.
Kitchen garden• Keep horticultural fleece handy to protect any delicate crops.• Sow main crop sweet corn, pumpkins and squashes in modules.• Every two weeks sow short rows of lettuce, beetroot, spring onion and radish.• Look out!....for small green caterpillars of gooseberry sawfly.
Ornamental garden• The Chelsea chop is all about how to manage strong growing herbaceous perennials that are difficult to stake and fall apart, for example Sedums, Anthemis and Achillea. At the time of the Chelsea flower show, cut back these perennials by half. • Take soft wood cuttings (6-8cm) from your favourite shrubs, cutting each shoot just below a leaf joint. Ideally insert them into free draining cutting compost made of 50/50 compost and grit. Bottom heat, high humidity and plenty of sunlight are 3 important factors for successful rooting.

Jubilee PlansTo mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign the
Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The
celebrations will centre around an extended
weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.
The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation
took place on 2 June 1953.
She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years)
in 2002.
The website www.thediamondjubilee.org is a useful resource for history, images,
games and a great way to send a message to the Queen for her Jubilee year!
The Queens Diamond Jubilee Tour started in March and runs through until the 25 July.
www.2012queensdiamondjubilee.com lists the route.
National events are celebrations can be found at www.direct.gov.uk/diamondjubilee
The Big LunchThe fourth annual Big Lunch will
fall on the same weekend as the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. So
anyone who would like to celebrate and commemorate the Queen’s 60 year reign can
do so by holding a Big Jubilee Lunch! Some 10 million people came out in sunny 1977
to celebrate the Silver Jubilee.
The beauty of The Big Lunch is that people themselves decide everything about their
own event. The venue can be wherever you want or have space, the theme whatever
you fancy - food and people are the key ingredients. Quite simply, The Big Lunch want
to get as many people as possible to sit down and have lunch with their neighbours
on the first Sunday in June. After all The Big Lunch is all about community, friendship
and fun!

The Hunger GamesSuzanne Collins Scholastic £7.99
Blockbuster film! Katniss Everdeen is a survivor. She has to be; she’s representing her District, number 12, in
the 74th Hunger Games in the Capitol, the heart of Panem, a new land that rose from the ruins of a post-apocalyptic North America. To punish citizens for an early rebellion, the rulers require each
district to provide one girl and one boy, 24 in all, to fight like gladiators in a futuristic arena. The event is broadcast like reality TV, and the winner returns with wealth for his or her district.

Sounds familiar? It’s what an awful lot of people think. The truth is rather different, however. If you haven’t made a Will, then the decision is out of your (and your sister’s, mother’s or best friend’s) hands, because Social Services will make the decision as to who will be the guardian of your children until they reach the age of 18. For those people who are not married to the other parent of the children, it gets even worse, because the father is not automatically given guardianship of his own children should the mother die. And there’s such a simple way to avoid this; make a Will!
The key decision to make is who, if you die, should look after your children and carry out your wishes for their care. Even if you haven’t got many worldly goods, your most valuable asset is your children, and a Will ensures they go where you want them to. It obviously ensures that all your other assets go where you want them to as well.
Guardians should ideally be of a similar age to the parents. If appointing older guardians, then make sure you review their suitability at regular intervals.
Unless the guardians are a couple, do not appoint joint guardians. Typically appointing both grandmothers is a recipe for disputes. On the face of it they get on, but would they if they had joint guardianship of the children? Whom do they live with? What type of discipline do they get? Which church do they go to? The list is endless. The last thing you want is to risk your children being the centre of a dispute when they are already upset.
Appointing guardians who live abroad, can cause problems as permission will be required to take them abroad and that might not be granted. Just because a person is a guardian to children, the children will not automatically be allowed to live in the guardian’s country (e.g. USA). Nor will the guardian be automatically allowed to live in England unless they are from the European Union.
One final point – before you take the big step of appointing guardians for your children, make sure they want the job and are prepared to look after them.

upright in a little water, just as you would for flowers. When you are ready to eat, put them in boiling water and cook for a few minutes until they are tender. Eat straight away with lots of butter and salt.
Some ideas;1. Try them dipped in soft boiled eggs instead of toasted soldiers.
2. How about in pasta with green house tomatoes, rocket, mozzarella and olive oil?
3. Antipasti with olives, Parma ham and crusty bread.
4. Wrap the stems in Parma ham and bake with fresh figs served with a blue cheese salad.
