We moved into Phase 1 of the 3-Phase Surgery addition/remodel in November, and the response from patients/families/staff has been overwhelmingly positive. The added space, privacy and enhanced patient flow are all very much appreciated. We are now in the demolition portion of Phase 2, with the anticipated completion and opening of that phase in July of 2018. We will move into the final phase immediately upon occupancy of Phase 2, and complete the last phase in February of 2019. Work in the Main Lobby and Emergency Department Registration areas should be completed in January. We are adding space to our growing Wound Clinic & Hyperbaric Oxygen service line. Under the physician leadership of Dr. Andrew Roudebush, we have witnessed a steady climb in volumes, and we anticipate the need for these services to only increase in the future. A number of new or enhanced services at Graham Health System are seeing significant growth as well. Our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program became certified through the Pritikin Center, and we have seen patient excitement and involvement at record levels. This program, with a comprehensive focus on the physical and mental aspects of Cardiac Rehabilitation (Diet/Exercise/Education), has been a real “life changer” for our program enrollees. Our Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy volumes have seen significant growth with the addition of more specialized staff, and the new state-of-the-art facility, which includes a warm water therapy pool. In

the Fall of 2017, we began offering 3D Mammography at Graham Hospital, which has been of substantial interest to ladies who are concerned with being tested with the very latest advancement in mammography technology. 3D screenings are available without a physician’s referral and highly recommended for women over the age of 40 or with a family history of breast cancer. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, please make sure to take advantage of the one-time “Welcome to Medicare” screening & then an annual wellness visit each year thereafter – they are both FREE OF CHARGE! You’ve worked hard all your life and deserve to reap the benefit of each of these critical health screenings. Both, the Welcome and the annual visits, are a great way to benchmark your overall health with your Primary Care Physician, and to monitor ongoing health concerns. Please call: (309) 647-0201, ext. 7103, and tell them you want to schedule your visit. Our staff will be happy to help you out. It’s extremely easy and convenient to do. Throughout this publication you will see stories and advertising around all the great things happening at Graham Health System. We are continuing to add Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to the medical staff, and new employees across the entire health system, to ensure we have the resources needed to best provide the care you and your family deserve. We are blessed and honored to get the chance to meet the ever-changing healthcare needs of folks in Fulton and surrounding counties.

I hope each and every one of you had a very Merry Christmas. My wish for you is a healthy, happy and prosperous 2018! On behalf of the 700 employees of Graham Health System, thank you for the privilege to serve.

Judy & Rick in the comfort of their home

GRAHAM – Our #1 ChoiceSo many of us are absolutely enthralled with medical-drama on television. From the long-running TV series of M*A*S*H to Doogie Howser, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Good Doctor, weekly television medical emergencies have been a staple for many years. When it comes to how our bodies function and sometimes fail, we seem to be hooked. Without a doubt, medical science is a source of interest and fascination. Is this because of “fear of the unknown?” Are we frightened with the idea of a medical emergency we may face at some point in our lives? Whatever the reason, it’s easy enough to separate fact from fiction; that is, until the medical emergency becomes our reality, as it did with Judy and Rick. After 3 days of not feeling well, Rick

was finally able to talk his wife, Judy, who he characterized (while smiling) as “stubborn,” into seeing her doctor. Her symptoms included a belly ache, chills,

abdominal pain, and the inability

to urinate. Regretfully, Judy put off going to the doctor in hopes of feeling better on her own. Without effort, she recalled how she cringed in pain with every bump they hit on the way to Dr. Chamberlin’s office in Farmington. After a detailed examination, Dr. Chamberlin advised Rick to take her to Graham Hospital in Canton, as he was ordering a CT examination to get a better understanding of what all was going on. After the radiology exam and some lab work, Judy was admitted on the Med/Surg Unit. Dr. Chamberlin, now present at the hospital, was actually in Judy’s room as she expressed that she was

feeling nauseous. Little did anyone know, a real-life medical emergency was about to happen. As Judy leaned forward to get sick, she suddenly collapsed and went into cardiopulmonary arrest. Code Blue echoed throughout. Rick, who described Judy as “the love of his life,” watched helplessly as a team of doctors and nurses performed CPR. The staff worked tirelessly for a lengthy period. As her legs turned a shade of bluish-purple, she was administered multiple shocks with an AED to restore a rhythm. After approximately 20 minutes of continuously working on her, Judy’s heart miraculously started beating. Once stable, she was quickly flown by helicopter to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Judy’s kidneys were not functioning, blood pooled in her chest, and Rick recalled hearing, “Don’t expect a lot. The reality is, she is the sickest person in the hospital, and has only a 5% chance of surviving.” Her family and pastor gathered and stayed by her side. As they prayed, any and all improvements were treasured. Slowly, her survival chance went from 5% to 20%, and continued to improve until she was eventually discharged. As Judy and Rick reflected on their medical emergency, they wholeheartedly believe in the power of prayer for complete healing. After 20 minutes without any sort of cardiac rhythm, amazingly, Judy has no damage to her heart, brain, kidneys, liver – everything restarted as it functioned before. Judy, Rick and their boys expressed their gratitude for Dr. Chamberlin (Internal Medicine/Pediatrician), Dr. Ramos (ER

physician), and the nursing team (Molly, Jessica, Amanda, and Dandy) for their continued attempt to save her life. They expressed that the staff at OSF shared with them, “The efforts of Graham Hospital staff are what saved your life and prevented you from having any permanent brain damage.” Extremely thankful, Judy wanted each to know that they are #1 in her book! Judy said, “God bless each of you, and thank you.” Registered nurse, Molly, shared, “As healthcare providers we must always be prepared for the worst. It can happen at any moment without notice. In Judy’s case, each person who responded came prepared in their role, and did their part until we knew she was stable. Our Graham team prides themselves on being, not just co-workers, but family. Each member of our family is proud and ready to care for your family in any real-life medical emergency.”

Don’t let winter...BRING YOU DOWNAnyone can slip and fall at any time, but winter proves to be particularly tricky. The snow and ice that the season often brings can lead to slippery conditions outside. The Orthopaedic Specialists at Graham Medical Group want to make sure our community stays safe this winter. Before attempting to shovel snow or rush out for that last errand before a storm, consider these tips for fall prevention:• Focus on footwear: Rubber soles, especially those with

plenty of tread, provide better traction on snow and ice than either leather or plastic soles, making them the best choice for fall prevention.

• Careful with cars: Many falls occur when exiting or entering vehicles. Always make sure your footing is clear when you get out of a car.

• Beware of black ice: It’s just as slippery as regular ice, but difficult to see, making it a top winter safety concern. Stay on clear pathways or ones that have been treated with sand or salt.

• Shovel safely: If you have to shovel, clear a level pathway to stand on so you won’t lose your balance.

• Make winter safety a priority: Avoid rushing and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination safely. Avoid shortcuts through snow or over icy areas.

As we age, it becomes more important to take the necessary precautions to ensure our health and safety. This is especially true during the winter months, when there are increased risks for seniors. By following these winter safety tips, you can help yourself stay healthy as you enjoy the winter, and anticipate the return of warm weather. If you or a loved one happens to slip and fall this winter, our Orthopaedic Specialists provide outstanding care for trauma and fractures, and are always happy to evaluate your injury if you have a concern.

You’ve worked hard all your life, been married over a quarter of a century, raised a beautiful family, and are looking forward to traveling and retirement, when all of the sudden you are dealt the biggest blow of your lifetime: you are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Statistics show that someone is diagnosed with PD every

9 seconds, but this wasn’t just a statistic…this was for real! This “number” had a name; his name is Ron. Shell-shocked and unable to make heads-or-tails about what

all this really means, Ron was left breathless, depressed and feeling defeated. Understandably, it takes time to fully process this life-changing news; not only for yourself, but for your entire family, as the future you worked so hard for and carefully planned, will inevitably take a different course moving forward. Fast Fact: It is estimated that there are currently 1.5 million people in the United States with PD. 1 out of 10 people over the age of 55 will be diagnosed. Marty, a nurse and Ron’s wife of {now} nearly 40 years, was reasonably familiar with PD because of her profession, when Ron was diagnosed 12 years ago. After detailed research, she discovered that exercise translates to better motor function compared to people with Parkinson’s who remain sedentary, and the more active

a person is, the longer they generally live. Ironically, long before Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with PD himself, one of his well-known sayings as a professional boxer could not have been more appropriate and motivational for all who are fighting Parkinson’s, “Inside of a ring or out, ain’t nothing wrong with going down. It’s the staying down that’s wrong.” Once the initial shock from the diagnosis starts to fade, it’s imperative to ‘throw on the gloves and fight!’ Fast Fact: In addition to its well-known effects of slowing down cognitive decline and boosting heart and lung function, exercise can help improve gait, balance, tremor, flexibility, grip strength and motor coordination in people with Parkinson’s Disease.Exercise quickly became a priority in Ron and Marty’s lives. For the last year, Ron a.k.a. “The Hammer” and Marty a.k.a. “The Nail” have been active participants at Graham Wellness Center in the Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) Program, a non-contact boxing program dedicated to people with Parkinson’s Disease. Recently, at a follow-up with Ron’s doctor, they were delighted to learn that Ron had not lost additional strength, rather he actually gained some. “I don’t think people really know the benefit of RSB. It’s misunderstood. Not only does each class focus on strength and exercising, there is

an emphasis on cognitive workouts which are undeniably crucial.” Fast Fact: Males have a 50% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease than females.Although Parkinson’s is a chronic and progressive condition with no known cure (yet), Ron is TRIUMPHANT in his ability to help control and manage symptoms through the Rock Steady Boxing training program. Jake Green, RSB Trained Specialist and Assistant Director at Graham Wellness Center, shared, “Ron and Marty love coming to class. They have battled this disease for a long time, and continue to struggle like everyone else does through the normal grind called ‘life.’ About 3 months ago, Ron (unfortunately) fell and broke his left wrist while at home. He was in a cast and still continued to show up to class and participate. He and Marty are always on the move. They won’t let Parkinson’s or anything else slow them down in life.” Jill Schroeder, OTR/L, expressed, “Ron was seen by outpatient Occupational Therapy (OT) for 8 visits following his fall which resulted in a fractured left wrist and an injured left thumb, which was inoperable. He made considerable gains with his OT sessions, and was discharged with ‘all goals met.’ Over the course of those 8 weeks, he gained 50 degrees of motion for his wrist, and was able to make a full fist which allowed him to return to boxing in the Rock Steady Boxing program with Jake. He was given a custom home program based on his needs that he (and Marty) will continue to work on independently. Ron and Marty are both positive, and extremely proactive and supportive of one another. They certainly were a pleasure to work with,

The difference between TRY and TRIUMPH is that little “umph,” & Ron undoubtedly has the UMPH!

and another example of why I enjoy working in Occupational Therapy.”Rock Steady Boxing classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s Disease, can lessen their symptoms when participating in the training program. The class is taught by specially trained exercise specialists who focus on overall fitness of the mind and body, including strength and cognitive training, reaction time and balance. As Ron’s corner coach and biggest fan, Marty emphasized, “RSB is a wonderful program, and Jake is super!” Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning at 1 p.m. To learn more or to register for a class, please contact Jake Green at (309) 647-5240 ext. 2711.

The PRITIKIN PROGRAMA medically supervised program for optimal heart health.

Following Paul’s heart attack, he participated in the Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab (ICR) program at Graham Cardiopulmonary Rehab, where his lifestyle and lab results changed considerably.*

This outpatient, Medicare-approved, cardiac rehab program is proven to:1. Reduce bad cholesterol, chronic inflammation, and blood pressure (as well as the need for blood pressure medications).2. Improve cholesterol medication effectiveness.3. Reverse metabolic syndrome.4. Increase long-term adherence to a healthy lifestyle.Patients, such as Paul, can expect to: implement significant lifestyle changes, create a personal exercise action plan, lose weight, make heart-healthy choices when preparing a meal or dining out, manage stress in their daily lives, utilize a variety of strategies for smoking cessation, and improve their chances for avoiding another cardiac event.“At Graham Cardiopulmonary Rehab, there are medical personnel on site. If you suffer from any type of medical condition, it is by far better to come here than other gyms where staff aren’t able to closely monitor everyone, and help (in an emergency situation) is not as readily available,” emphasized Paul.If you are interested in learning more or to see if you qualify, please call our friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff at: (309) 647-4087
