What?

• The cold war- a feud and a competition between the nations of the west, and the communist bloc

•The democratic side, led by the United States, and the Communist bloc, led by Russia. • The two sides Competed over who could have the most nuclear weapons and the most influence in the developing world. They raced to get things done first, and to give money and support to new countries.

When?• The cold war began in 1945. Although conflicts began to

erupt around in 1917. • It ended in 1991 with the falling of the berlin wall

• The Korean war, and the Vietnam war happened during the Cold war

Who?

• The United States was at “battle” with Russia. It was more of a competition than a war with battles. They raced to create the atomic bombs, and had nuclear weapons pointed at each other with a moments notice to send them off.

• United States leader at the start of the cold war was Harry Truman

• Soviet Union leader at the start of the cold war was Joseph Stalin

• The cold war shaped the world in military and political affairs.• Countries such as Kazakstan, Ubekistan, Afghanistan, and other countries in that area, gained independence after the war.• The Berlin wall that separated West and East Germany was finally knocked down. • It was the basic foundation for many ofthe conflicts today such as the war on terror which is being fought in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, some of which are countries previously under Soviet Union rule.
