Hello Coffin Bay
Congratulations to Fi and her helpers for putting on a lovely Biggest Morning Tea at the Post Office, fantastic effort on raising $1600. The rain help off and the scones were divine,
couldn’t ask for anything more. Also Fi has raised enough money from Putt Putt to purchase a defibrillator which will be installed near the Town jetty. Well done and thankyou.
We also celebrated on that day Dilip’s fifth year in CB, thankyou Dilip for all that you do for us.
Working Bee’s have been going well at the Hall, thanks to all that have been able to help
out. Our newest Progress member Georgina Lewis, who lives over in Kellidie Bay, is going to compile the history of Progress over the past 70 years. I know this will be a huge job and I
am looking forward to seeing what she will discover in all the boxes and files we have at the Hall.
The fence at the Playground should commence at the end of the month, slight holdup with
the powder coating.
Unfortunately we have not been able to find a new secretary. I know some people don’t like the thought of being on a Committee but we are a nice bunch and willing to help you
settle in.
I mentioned in my last report that we would love to hold a Spring plant sale probably in September. We would combine this with a book stall, cake stall, refreshments, and need
stalls selling plants, flowers, pots, mosaics etc. BUT we need to know if there is any interest in regards to stall holders. Please ring me or text me if you think you would like to join us on the

Have you dropped in to Beachies to see Steve and Tilly since they have been
back as sole owners?
We are welcoming everyone back in the month of June by offering a free drink
(alcohol not included) when $40 is spent in one transaction.
Just mention the offer when you come in for a feed, or groceries, or fuel or lots
of ice-cream ☺ to receive a free hot or cold drink.
Some old favourites are back on the menu. Check it out on the last 2 pages of
this Coffin Bay Sun. Easy to tear off and keep on the fridge.
Winter hours are 8am to 6pm and as always phone orders are welcome.
Oyster happy hour is back in June….. 4 – 5 pm daily.

Gardening Tip by Phil Siviour - Coffin Bay Gardening Service
The insects that thrived in our gardens in the warm weather have disappeared, but have unfortunately been replaced by millipedes, caterpillars, slugs and snails.
Millipedes are attracted by light, so use this to attract and trap them. Caterpillars
are best removed from your leafy vegetables by hand or using non-toxic spray specific to caterpillars when they first appear. Slugs and snails are now very hungry!
Remove by hand or set traps to collect them. Your chooks may be grateful for the extra treat!
Citrus trees in pots need a bit of help to get through winter. Fertilise with a small amount of potash (rose fertiliser is good), cut back branches that have strong
growth by about 25 – 30%, and remove leaves that have been damaged by citrus leaf miner. These need to be destroyed, not composted.
-Meet the Locals-
MASKED LAPWING
The wild cry of the Masked Lapwing evokes treasured memories of holidays with my grandparents at Meningie in the early fifties. It was they that gave me my first bird book “What
Bird is That?” by Neville Cayley.
Also known as Spur-winged Plovers, they need little introduction as many are seen in open areas about our town. A pair are regularly found either around the bottom of Giles Road on the
Esplanade footpath or at water’s edge on the little beach. Their most prominent feature is the
yellow dingle-dangles properly known as “wattles” hanging from the sides of their head. They are often confused with the endangered Hooded Plover – more about them in a future article.
My daughter was a bit dark on these birds after she was attacked. They nest in open paddocks
and defend their eggs/hatchlings either with distraction tactics (eg. feigning injury) or aggressive swooping. Beware, and retrace your steps; they have sharp spurs projecting from
their wing bones. However, her heart melted when she witnessed one watching over its road-killed mate for a couple of days. They may have been together for 30 years.
Nesting on the ground renders their eggs
and chicks vulnerable to being sniffed out by foxes at night. It appears that that
fox baiting is the reason numbers are buoyant in our area.
Their diet includes insects, grubs, worms,
small aquatic life and vegetable matter.

COFFIN BAY YACHT CLUB - NEWS
Sailing Season 2018/19 presentations were held on Friday17th May at the CBYC, with a great turn out of sailors eagerly awaiting the results/rewards. We had a good mixture of the junior sailors who have been participating in the “Learn to Sail” program and the senior sailors of
whom race in the afternoons.
All the junior participants that were involved in the sail training program received an award for their participation being a beach towel and a medallion. These awards were made available due to the sponsorship from
Shane Woods of Eyre Refrigeration and Electrical of which the club and juniors greatly appreciated.
The senior trophy presentation then started with all boats/crew receiving an award. The standout winners were Maddy & Rusty Lowe in the Heron Class and Peter & Deanna Henderson in the 125 Class.
The Sailing Supporter of the year was awarded to Rusty Lowe for his efforts of helping with the junior program and getting two herons on the water most weekends.
The coveted award Sailor of the Year went to Tim Ashman who travelled and participated in the 125 National Titles at the Humpybong Yacht Club in Queensland. He represented the Club in a great manner and sportsmanship while away at the Nationals and had a result of ninth overall at the end of the
regatta. Tim also volunteers with running the junior sail training program every Sunday morning during sailing season and also is a valued committee member of the CBYC.
All of this is not possible without thanking the many sponsors, volunteers, helpers, Mums and Dads that put a great effort every weekend throughout the sailing season.
We also look forward to another great year next year and encourage anyone that wants to have a go or learn to sail, to leave an expression of interest with contact details of the participant, at the Club.
See you all again next season.. Hendo
