Most people know xylitol as just an expensive sugar substitute. But in reality, xylitol’s far reaching benefits go beyond it just being a sweetener.
As a sweetener: In recent years, xylitol has become a very popular sugar substitute for diabetics and people who want to avoid sugar. There are very good reasons to use xylitol as an alternative sweetener:1. Unlike other sweeteners, xylitol
is all natural; it is found in fruits and other natural sources. Because xylitol is found in nature, our body knows how to metabolize it.
2. Tastes like sugar and has no after taste.
3. While other sweeteners are much sweeter than sugar, and you have to adjust the measurements accordingly, xylitol, will measure just like sugar- a cup for a cup.
When starting to use xylitol, introduce it into your diet slowly, because xylitol is a sugar alcohol and it can upset your digestive system if it is not added gradually.
Dental health:There are few things that work as well as xylitol, when it comes to
cavity prevention. Numerous studies show that taking just 5 grams a day of xylitol will substantially reduce cavities from forming in the teeth.

to the teeth. These bacteria are only harmful when they form colonies, which they do by surrounding themselves with a protective coating called biofilms. The sugar that we eat feed the bacteria and helps them build the biofilms. In contrast, xylitol, will break up the biofilm because its chemical structure is fundamentally different than sugar, causing the bacteria to become ineffective.
Ear infections and sinusitis:Xylitol has also been studied in the area of preventing ear infections and sinusitis. The most effective way to use it for these conditions is by administering xylitol nasal spray 4 to 6 times daily. The studies have also looked at xylitol chewing gum, but there is currently non with a kosher certificate; though the company Xlear claims that their product is kosher.
Ingredients: 4 ½ cups of flour 4 tsp. baking powder A pinch of salt 1 cup of sugar 3 egg yolks 1 T. of vanilla sugar 1 cup of oil½ cup of orange juice Choice of filling (jam, jelly, chocolate chips, nuts etc)
Directions: Combine all the ingredients for desired dough and mix until it is smooth. Then bake on a well-greased cookie sheet or on parchment paper for 12-15 minutes at 400 degrees.
Roll out the dough to ¼ “ thickness on a well floured surface and use a cookie cutter or the rim of a glass to cut the dough into 2 ½ “-3 ½” circles.
Insert filling into the middle of the circle. NOTE: DO NOT put too much filling inside since it will overflow.
Look at the picture of Step Number 1 in order to get a sense of the proportion of filling the circle. Then follow through pictures 2 through 4 to fold over the circle thereby turning it into a triangle.
OPTIONAL- Moistening the edge of the circle with some water before folding it may help to stick it shut more firmly. It is also especially helpful if the dough has become dry. You also may consider brushing the top of the triangle with egg giving it some extra shine.
