Dad rented two houses on Bald Head each summer for the entire family as our Christmas present. It was WONDERFUL family time. One of the highlights was the annual scavenger hunt. It was a fun two hours for the hunters (accompanied by the Dads) as they scurried around the Island, and the perfect “happy hour” for the ladies as they got a chance to relax and chat by the sea.
I’ll never forget taking my niece and nephew, Monica and Gray, to their first BHI turtle boil. They were very young and fell asleep on the warm sand on a beautiful August night as we waited for the turtles, which started hatching around midnight.
My family LOVED competing. Each year at Bald Head we would challenge each other to wave riding. The winner garnered a much-sought-after “Master Wave Rider” t-shirt.
Judy and Joe Brawner initiated the Coyote Golf Tournament as a means to encourage non-golfers to “get into the swing of things”. The first tournament was so windy we were actually concerned as Charlotte Dunlap and her pushcart were blown toward the lagoon on the 16th hole.
Memories of two Island parties we hosted make me smile…
The “Meatball Cook-Off” when ten chefs competed for the best meatballs. We had a panel of judges and seventy plus tasters who voted Gail Liesgang’s meatballs the best! (They contained a raisin in the middle.)
We hosted a Halloween party and Adie Coy was voted best pumpkin carver, while Danny Culler (the Mouse Wrangler) came in 2nd with his egg-cellent deviled eggs decorated as mice!16 Peppervine Trail $1,745,000 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths

Winning the Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo after having placed 2nd and 3rd.
Watching my girls grow up in bathing suits with sand between their toes.
Sunsets with a good glass of “sweet tea”.
High noon with a good glass of “sweet tea”.
And by the way sunrises with a good glass of “sweet tea”!
Boating excursions to restaurants on the mainland.
The ability to fish before work.
Playing 9 holes in the afternoon.
Running off shore to the rich Gulf Stream of North Carolina.
My most favorite memory is when my girls were 4 and 5 years old. We had just moved to the Island. I remember looking over my shoulder and they had huge smiles! I asked why they were smiling and they said we are finally here!

The amazement of my parents at the beautiful vegetation and the wildlife on the Island. We even had a raccoon try to steal food right out of our cart.
Many July 4th spent decorating golf carts for the Island parade: pulling a jon boat 9 kids riding “Out to Sea”, Blackbeard’s Pirate Ship with 10 kids, the Stars and Stripes and the Big Green Turtle with 4 Hatchlings. So much fun! The VanEgmonds riding with me starting as young as three and still joining in even though they’re in college. My grandsons Gus and Charlie ride with us whenever possible.
I skydived over Bald Head Island from 13,000 feet and landed at the Oak Island Airport. Exhilarating!!
Dancing on a rooftop deck under the brilliant Bald Head Island stars to great tunes with great friends… I could go on forever.

My favorite memory of the Island goes back to our very first visit. We were on our way to breakfast and to explore the Island when we passed three little kids riding their bikes down the street in their pajamas. That is when I first knew that this place was something special and I wanted to be a part of it.
I really like the fact that you can choose your beach days based upon wind direction. If the wind is up a bit and blowing out of the south, then you would go to East Beach. If the wind is blowing stiffly out of the east, then you would choose South Beach. Plus, I really love the fact that with 14 miles of beaches, they are just never crowded.
Golf is superb here. The BHI Club’s course was rated as the 7th best course in North Carolina this year and I never get tired of playing it. One of my birding friends golfing with me recently identified 25 different varieties on the course during 18 holes of golf.
My favorite memory of BHI is our son’s wedding three years ago this August. We are excited about creating a new wonderful memory the first time we take our new grandson, Finn, to play in the ocean.
The memories of our daughter, Hannah, working on the Island at the BHI club and at the former River Pilot Café, allowed us some quality time together here.
The week our family visits BHI each year is very special time. Our other grandson, Jackson, is 10 yrs old this summer and loves the ocean. It’s such fun to watch and be with him and his parents. Our house may be bulging at the seams but we love every minute.

My most vivid memory of coming to BHI is of the July 4, 1996 weekend. Debbie and I came for some rest and relaxation, away from the hectic bustle of Raleigh/Cary real estate. We looked forward to some peace and quiet away from the rat race of city life.
Those thoughts quickly fell apart when John Messick introduced us to a bouncy, vivacious bundle of energy named Wendy. She was new to BHI real estate and we were new to BHI. We fell in love with the Island on day one; bought on day two and when we left on day three, John apologized because the Island was so crowded.
There were 750 people on the entire Island that weekend! East Beach was “so crowded” that fourteen people (including ourselves) could hardly find five hundred square feet to call our own. Can you imagine being on East Beach and having to share it with twelve others?

On my first visit to BHI, my wife’s third, we arrived on the Island around 5:30 p.m. The power went out at 6:30 so we went to eat near the harbor. The gnats were so bad and small that they came through the screened porch so we took food back to the house to eat only to find there were no candles so we couldn’t see. We went to bed early and awoke early, because all of the lights came on around 3:00 a.m. with the power! We met with a REALTOR® at 9:00 a.m. to look at lots. We bought property before 1:00 p.m. (That guy was good and I now work with him!) “That is the Lure of Bald Head”.
Walking on the beach with my wife and dog has got to be one of the closest things to “heaven on earth” I have ever experienced.
We now have 9 grandchildren and 1 on the way! We love sharing BHI with every one of them. On Pirates Weekend one year, I got to climb all the steps of Old Baldy three times in a four- hour period with one of our grandchildren. This is the same grandchild that jumped into the harbor when he saw the Pirate ship coming in to dock the night before!

Although referred to as off-season, fall is an ideal time to be on Bald Head Island. The temperate climate transforms outdoor activities into year-round pleasures. While the Island is never truly crowded by most coastal resort standards, there are even fewer visitors in these months, making it easy to get the tee time or dinner reservation that perfectly suits your lifestyle.
There is plenty of fun on the Island September through November:
• Climb Old Baldy Lighthouse
• Nine & Dine with the golfers
• Walk 14 miles of secluded beach
• Bluefish Bonanza
• Girlfriend/Reunion Weekends
• Howl at the Moon with new friends and locals
• Fish, crab or clam in 10,000 acres of the BHI Creek
• Enjoy deep-sea fishing in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream
