Reading Expectation for Kindergarten:
The Goal for the End of Kindergarten is to be reading on a Level 6 (Independently).
WHY? Aren’t they just babies??1. State Law requires on-level tests to be passed in order to promote
certain grades. (Grade 5 – Reading, Math)(Grade 8 – Reading , Math)
2. The State Board of Education has implemented stiff graduation requirements:• Starting with students who enter the ninth grade in 2011, high-
school students will be required to average passing scores on end-of-course tests in 12 subjects.
• The score on the end-of-course test will count for 15 percent of the student's final grade.
3. 2012 is the field test for the brand new STAARS test, which is replacing the TAKS test.
What can we do to help?
Parents and schools are a partnership!• Check Daily Folder & Weekly Light bulb• Read with your child.• Allow your child to make mistakes. Seeing errors
allows teachers to reteach.• Work on listening and following directions the first
time. This allows us to spend more time teaching!• Social Skills = survival skills. Learning how to work
and play together sets the groundwork for success in school.
How to study with a kinder…
• Touch and say letters• Numbers
• Colors• Shapes
• Positional words• Respect for the speaker
• Environmental print • Read, read, read!
Other Things to Work on:• Shoe tying! Just remember: 22 students = 44 shoes
to tie! We expect all students to tie their own shoes by Halloween. (Velcro is always an option!)
• Address, phone number, birthday. (We like students to know these for safety purposes).
Cafeteria Procedures
• Students are allowed to purchase snacks at their own choice, unless the parent contacts the cafeteria staff.
• If you would like to speak with Food Services, you can call the school (972) 617-2977.
Field Trip:•Where: Country Critters Pumpkin Patch (Mansfield, TX)• When: Friday, October 14th. • If you would like to attend, you must complete a background check (with an attached copy of your driver’s license) and turn it in to the office no later than October 4th.
