Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put
it down to give the vacuum one more chance?
Dear Friends, One day a preacher was speaking in the open-air to a crowd of people. One man in the crowd interrupted the speaker. He said, "The good news of Jesus Christ has been with us for 2000 years and look at the mess in the world. It is useless" The preacher brought out a bar of soap and said, " Soap has been in the world even longer and look at the state of your neck!" Soap is only useful if it is applied. The gospel, or good news of forgiveness and cleansing in Jesus, is only useful when it is also per-sonally applied. But someone may add, "Is Christianity not just a crutch for the weak?" If I break a leg, I would not mind using a crutch. If I am sick, I do not mind going to a doctor. As I am a sinner and guilt is a reality, I need someone who can forgive me. If that crutch is Jesus Christ, who has proved clearly for centuries that he is able to make the weak---strong; thieves---honest; immoral people----pure; blasphemers-----kind in their talk; judgemental people--- loving; and uncaring persons-----sympathetic, then surely he is a support worth trusting for the peace, pardon and purpose he offers. May we all discover today, like the writer of the psalm so long ago, "The Lord is my strength and my song" (Psalm 118 v 14). Every blessing to you all,
Iain Macnee Interim Moderator and Locum Minister

Vacancy Update As reported in the last issue of the ‘Claik’, a further meeting of the congregation was to be held on Sunday 8th March
2015 with a view to increasing the number serving on the committee from the original 5 members appointed in
December 2014. The meeting was duly held and the original committee was dissolved and the 5 initial members
reappointed. A further 8 members were appointed to the committee to give the maximum number permissible of 13. The
committee now comprises: Mrs Kim Donn, Mrs Kathleen Noble, Mrs Lynne Strachan, Mrs Dorothea West, Mrs Angela
Gracie, Mrs Christine Ritchie, Mrs Sheila Watt, Mrs Violet White, Mr Gordon Duthie, Mr James Muirhead, Mr John
Ritchie, Mr Barry Smith and Dr Niall Watt.
A number of meetings of the committee have been held since that time and initial arrangements of preparing a parish
profile and updating the church website are well underway. It is hoped that an advertisement can be placed in the ‘Life
& Work’ magazine shortly and that the search for a new minsiter will begin in earnest. Let’s pray for a successful search
and may God provide the right minister to take our church forward in the years ahead.
Church Refurbishment Programme
Since the last report, further progress has been made with the work outside the church and the resurfacing of
the entrance area and side paths has now been completed. This, together with the new railings and the
completion of some paintwork, has greatly improved the external appearance of the church. The garden area
behind the mausoleum has still to be tidied up and resurfaced which would complete the bulk of the external
works.
As reported last time, the heating upgrade had just been completed and the lighting was due to be done just at
the time the ‘Claik’ was going to print. This has also now been completed creating a much brighter and
welcoming sanctuary. The old bulbs have been replaced with modern and efficient LEDs and the wiring to the
lights has been fully upgraded. We have been able to retain the existing lamp shades and give thanks to Mrs
Yvonne Ferguson who washed and cleaned every one!
The next stage of the interior upgrade is the refurbishment of the front vestibule. It was hoped that the main
joinery work would start at the beginning of April but this was delayed and we await confirmation of a new
date of commencement. In the meantime, the memorial plaque in the vestibule has been cleaned and fully
re-gilded and we give special thanks to Mr Sandy Ewan who gave of his time to do this work at no cost to the
church.
As stated in the last report, Mrs Beldy Blackhall and her wonderful ‘Kash for the Kirk’ team have raised over
£13,000 for the refurbishment programme and they expressed a desire for the funds to be used specifically for
new carpeting for the church. A quote was therefore obtained and plans are in place to replace all the
downstairs carpeting in the sanctuary (with the exception of the two narthex areas) once the vestibule work
and some additional paintwork has been completed.
We very much look forward to all the work being completed to provide a fresh and comfortable worship
sanctuary and we acknowledge once again the magnificent effort of our fundraising team and all those who
have helped and contributed in any way to the project.

Guild Inter-Organisation Quiz 4th February 2015
Thank you to all the different organisations in the church who entered our quiz night. It would have been
lovely if a few more teams had come along but those
who were there did a great job. It was great to see
our young ones entering. As I have said before it is
only for fun and there are no real winners or losers.
We had teams from the Choir, Coffee Lounge,
Guild, The Broch Bells, Covenanters, Coffee
Lounge Youngsters and Girls Brigade. I applaud you
all for entering, thank you. Without you all coming
we could have no quiz night. A huge thank you to Annette Milne for making up
the quiz and being compere for the evening. Annette
you are just magic, great job. Freda Young and
daughter Helen Birnie did a wonderful job of
keeping score. Thank you Helen for coming along
and helping out with an important job. We had seven teams entered and after various rounds we were at the finals stage with Girls Brigade v Junior
Coffee Lounge. Patty Muirhead and Chris MacFarlane for Girls Brigade and Jade Kay and Isla MacCall for
Junior Coffee Lounge. It was a great final with the Girls Brigade winning but Isla and Jade did very well as
runners up. We ended the evening with a lovely cup of tea. All in all a lovely evening, thank you very much to everyone.
Roll on next year.

WORSHIP ON THE NORWEGIAN EPIC
We decided to sail home from Florida to Europe in late April
and chose the NCL ship “The Norwegian Epic.” This ship is
a monster cruise ship, holding 4,500 passengers ! This did
not put us off, even though our cabin was on the fifteenth
deck, just one level from the top of the ship, the pools, the
jacuzzis and children’s slides and flumes.
Sailing across the
Atlantic was very
smooth, with no
storms and no rough seas – and the floating hotel offered you
everything….. main meals, snacks, coffees and teas, pizzas, burgers,
ice creams and desserts at any hour of the day.
There was everything from a bowling alley to a rock climbing wall,
and you could take part in hundreds of activities if you wished. Line
dancing, cookery demonstrations, art auctions, progressive trivia,
knitting…. The list was endless each day.
But sadly there was no chapel on board – apparently people do not need one nowadays I was told by the
management. This made me all the more determined to hold a Sunday service somewhere to worship our Lord
in the middle of the ocean.. After a bit of searching, I finally found a jazz lounge called the Fat Cats. The
interdenominational service was inserted into the activities for that Sunday – somewhere in between
salsa workouts and self-hypnosis and I copied orders of service and set up the chairs - in the hope that
perhaps 20 or 30 people might attend after breakfast.
I had my trusty I pad and a Bluetooth speaker for music. However, the first person to come into the lounge
was a Pastor from a church in northern Florida who agreed to lead the singing and also to read Scripture.
Praise the Lord ! More and more people kept arriving as we waited nervously. By the start of the service, over
110 people from all nationalities had gathered for worship. Great ! The singing was excellent, the Scripture
read with dignity and we prayed that morning for those who had died in the Nepal earthquake. We also
prayed for a group preparing to join pilgrims on the route to Santiago de Compostela and for a lady from New
York whose husband had died the day before in California and she was grieving his loss so far away from
him. It was good to be there together as Christians.
It brought it back to me that, no matter where you are in the
world, Christ is there with you on your journey – whether
crossing an ocean, grieving a loss, enjoying relaxing days,
He is part of our everyday lives.
What a comfort to know that we are never alone in this
world. If your travels take you away from home over
summer, remember that Sunday is a day for worship
wherever you are !!
Romans 8:38-39 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things
to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from
From a very young age I loved to read. My love for books and literature
has been a major influence on my childhood and adolescence; reaching a
pinnacle point when I chose to pursue a career in English teaching. It was
my admiration for authors whose books I couldn’t put down that inspired
me to write my own novel. I’d always said that it was an aspiring dream of
mine, to write a full length book, and I am immensely proud of myself for
doing so.
‘Fighting Fate’ is a book that I would pick up in a shop and want to read.
It was very important to me that I wrote about something I found
interesting and exciting- I had to enjoy writing about it in order for the
whole process to be gratifying. My choice to focus the novel around fairy
tales stemmed from a deep-rooted fascination of the stories, along with the
desire to further a short story I wrote a few years back that looked at
various fairy tales from an alternative point of view. In my opinion, there is
a gap in the market for a novel focusing on the likes of Cinderella, Jack
and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood so I am glad I have
produced something that I believe does those stories justice.
I am very grateful to all who have already purchased the book and I do
hope that you have enjoyed the story and the characters. It means a lot to
have so many people supporting me. I have already started the sequel to
‘Fighting Fate’ so, if you have read it and want to know what happens
next, keep a look out for book number two! I’ve also recently finished a
completely different novel called ‘Eden’ which focuses on the life of an
angel and I am immensely happy with how it has turned out. I also intend to release a collection of short
stories at the end of next year to compile all of my work at the end of my degree.
After summer I will enter the final year of my Master’s Degree in English Literature with Creative Writing.
I absolutely adore studying English and I’m so thankful every day that I chose to follow my love of books into
my future.
Once again I would just like to thank everyone for their support and I hope that in the near future you’ll be
able to see my novels on sale in major shops. Fingers crossed!
'Fighting Fate' is available to buy on Amazon as a paperback or Kindle copy OR you can order copies directly through me if you would like your book signed. Paperbacks cost £10 and Kindle copies are £4.50.

Diamond Wedding Anniversary Rosemary and George Clark would like to thank all their friends and family for the cards, gifts, letters and flowers which they received on the occasion of their Diamond wedding anniversary. They were overwhelmed by the show of love and support on this special day, even their card from the Queen couldn't beat it! It was a very special day for them with many friends visiting in the morning and a celebration meal in the afternoon. During the meal one of their grandsons- in-law asked George if he had any tips to secure a long and happy marriage. George responded.........."dee fit yer telt!" DOWNTON ABBEY AFTERNOON TEA
What a great afternoon all the ladies had! Dressed in
their finery, they came into the conference room
where judges Isobel Milne along with Ruby Walker,
our special guest from America, judged the finest
ladies dresses and accessories. There was a wide time
range from late Edwardian to the roaring twenties
and it was difficult to make a decision as so many
ladies had gone to such trouble to look so GOOD !
A lot of preparation had gone into this afternoon,
including buying Downton Abbey prizes, printing
posters for the walls and using real antique china cups
and saucers for the teas – as well as baking delightful
biscuits, Downton Abbey style.
Dorothy Mair, just returned from Florida, had
prepared an interesting programme, including a
Downton quiz, TV extracts from Downton and some
fun sing-along songs with the singing waitresses and
the helpful butlers, Kevin and Alfred joining in.
We thank all the ladies for supporting this afternoon
and a special big thank you to Heather Ritchie, Isobel Park, Ruby Walker, Beldy Blackhall and the
many ladies who helped prepare the afternoon to such a high standard. Hard work, but worth it to
have such a delightful afternoon and a very healthy profit made for the church resources fund.
Last Night of the Guild We ended our Guild season on the 1st April with our own Choir being guests for the evening.
We were wonderfully entertained by all. Thank you James and everyone with what has now
become a yearly meet.
Over the course of the year we have had some great people to entertain us. Every year it
becomes more difficult to find someone to come along for the night and entertain us. A
suggestion box is on display every week and forms are handed out every year to find out what all the ladies
would like. These are the first choices made by the committee when we meet to arrange the syllabus for the
following year.
I must thank all the Guild ladies for all their hard work this past year. Ladies, you are all treasures!
Have a lovely summer and a great rest, see you all in September.
God Bless

Just some of the Choir that took part L-R James Buchan, Ronnie Birnie, Freda Young, Wendy Gibson and
Margaret McLeman. We thank the choir for all the hard work that they put in for Sunday morning services
and all the other times that they perform, whether it be solos, duets or as a choir. It is so uplifting and inspiring
to hear you share your love of Jesus through your singing.
Thank you, Zandra
One of our Guild ladies Mrs Sandra MacKinnon and her husband
John are moving home to be nearer their family which is
understandable. John was our Session Clerk for many years and
Sandra was a leader in Sunday School for about 25 years. Sandra
has been a regular and faithful member of the Guild, always willing
to help out in any way. It has been a pleasure to have Sandra both in
the guild and in our church family.
Sandra was presented with a voucher and our good wishes from the
Guild. On behalf of all in the Auld Kirk we wish you both all the
very best in the next part of your journey in life. Please keep in
touch, you have both been very good ambassadors of our church,
haste ye back soon to visit.

The Walk of the Cross The annual Walk of the Cross was held once
again on Easter Sunday morning and was
attended by around forty-five worshippers
from different churches within Fraserburgh
who enjoyed the walk on a beautiful bright
morning. Rev. Iain Macnee led the walk to
Corbie Hill and gave a short address at the
top of the hill. Some of the worshippers
took part by carrying the cross along the
various stages en route and by reading
selected passages from the bible. A
welcome breakfast of bacon rolls and hot
coffee was provided by the Social
Committee back at the Centre following the
walk which was much appreciated by all.

3rd Fraserburgh Guides Trip to Disneyland Paris
On Sunday 5th April, the 3rd Fraserburgh Guides departed on a magical adventure to
Disneyland Paris. All 16 girls and 8 adults travelled by coach to Edinburgh airport then
flew to Charles de Gaulle airport where another coach awaited to take them to the Disney
Cheyenne Hotel. At night the girls attended Buffalo Bill’s Wild Western Show within the
Disney village.
Day two began with a character breakfast at Cafe
Mickey followed by a day at the Disney park. Some of
the rides the girls went on included It’s A Small World,
Indiana Jones, Peter Pan, Pinocchio and Alice in
Wonderland’s spinning teacups. The girls enjoyed an
evening meal at Annette’s Diner before returning to the
hotel for an early night.
On Tuesday the girls enjoyed an open-top bus tour of
Paris which included stops at the famous Louvre, Notre
Dame, Champs de Mars followed by a trip up the Eiffel
Tower. This was a great opportunity for the girls to
view the sites of Paris from the second floor of the
Eiffel Tower. Before heading back to the hotel the girls
enjoyed their evening meal and entertainment at Planet
Hollywood.
The girls spent day four at the Disney Studios park
where some girls went on rides including Tower of
Terror, Aerosmith Rock’n’Rollercoaster, Parachute
rides and Ratatouille before heading to the shops to
spend the last of their spending money before going
home. The group departed Charles de Gaulle airport at
8pm and arrived safely back to Fraserburgh at 1.30am.
The 3rd Fraserburgh Guides would like to say a huge thank you to all the leaders, parents and everyone who
supported the fundraising events. The experience we had is one the girls will treasure for a lifetime.

Here we are taking time out for a picture.
AULD KIRK NURSERY The nursery decorated eggs and had a walk to Broadsea to roll their eggs to celebrate Easter. We ended the term with a trip to Boomerangs and the children all received an Easter egg.
This term we have been learning about people who help us, firemen, police, doctors, etc using lots of role play, dressing up and other activities to enhance our understanding. We are going to be learning about metamorphosis through watching caterpillars turn to butterflies and learning about other life cycles. The nursery has a group of girls from NE college Fraserburgh who attend on a Friday for an enterprise course they are completing. They will be carrying out various activities with
the children including crafts, hip hop dance, physical play, story telling and walks around the local area. Angela Gracie has been taking circle time with the pre-school children to help with their transition into primary one building their confidence to listen, talk, think, concentrate and take turns. We have had a change of staff since the last Claik, After 4 years Emma Morrison has now left for a new job at Playbarn. She needed to be working more hours so we wish her well in her new job. Along with Fiona McKay who started in August, we now have Terry Moore who will be doing a job share with Fiona. Morning groups are full but there are some spaces left in the afternoon for children aged 2 years 6 months who are pre-funded
At our last Centre Committee meeting, it was suggested to try and make some money
to keep our Centre looking spick and span. Something is always needing repaired or
replaced as nothing lasts forever! It was decided to have a Prize Bingo Night. It never
ceases to amaze me how generous everyone is and I must thank each and every one of
you for giving so generously. I was a bit worried as it was pouring rain on the night but it was lovely to see everyone
coming into the big hall. In no time 74 people had arrived which was just magic. It
was lovely to see so many young ones there and boy, were they well behaved every one of you, you are all a
credit to your mums and dads. Mrs Ethel Yeats had volunteered her services to call out the numbers, thank you Ethel and thank you for
supplying the bingo books as well. Ethel also makes really lovely toffee and it sold out in record time. Eyes
down and time to start, I could not believe how quiet everyone was and soon the first house of the night was
shouted. A busy first half then we had a break for sausage rolls and tea and back to the bingo and then it was
all over. Some people won a few times and others nothing, it is all in the luck of the game. I asked all the
young ones to draw the raffles, they did very well - thank you kids for all your help. They were very patient
considering the amount of raffles that had been handed in. Thank you all again. After thanking Ethel for all her help, I thanked everyone for coming along. Thank you to all our helpers, great
job. Margaret Noble and George Ritchie counted the money at tea time and after expenses were deducted, the
fantastic amount of £676 was raised. This was a fantastic amount and I was really chuffed with that. Our
beadle, Alex Urquhart’s grandson David James told me as he was going he could not wait for the next prize
bingo night. That is so lovely and makes the work all worthwhile. Thank you everyone.

The Wednesday Club
This year got off to a good start with our own Cath Roskell who gave us a very informative talk on “Who Cares?” This was certainly an eye-opener and gave us a great insight into the world of Caring. February saw the return of a friend of the Club, Jean Fraser Cameron, from Aberdeen who shared her enthusiasm about Robert Burns and his life. She brought along Michael who did a sterling job in singing unaccompanied. Beldy then entertained the group of ladies with a Beetle Drive on 11th February. A big thank you to Beldy who stepped in to the breach at short notice.
Towards the end of February we were pleased to welcome Billy and Mae Lovie. Billy dirled the keys of the accordion and sang, and Mae recited poetry. Into March, and we were given a talk about the Commonwealth Games by Angela Gracie. Once again we were delighted that one of our own ladies from the Wednesday Club could help out with very little warning. We almost felt as though we had been at the Commonwealth Games ourselves! At the end of March we
were pleased that our Locum Minister, Rev Iain MacNee and his wife, Anthea, joined us for an afternoon of fellowship, ministry, songs and poems. At our last meeting on 8th April we enjoyed a great afternoon of song and readings from John Buchanan and his wife, Marne. You may have heard the lovely voice of John on Kinnaird Radio Faith Alive Show on a Sunday morning. We then had our outing on 22nd April to Inverurie. After an hour’s free time in the town centre we headed up to J G Ross the Bakers. We were made very welcome and had our meal, followed by a factory tour for those who felt able to access the premises. After donning our hairnets, “lab coats” and shoe protectors we were joined by Mr J G Ross and his son, Cameron, who demonstrated making butteries and scones. To top it all we then went back to the restaurant where we sampled the scones that had been baked for us. A short talk then followed where Mr Ross explained how he had come from humble beginnings to where he is now today with many shops and a large turnover. A good time was had by all!

Fraserburgh Herald Article - 6th May 1947 I found this article of interest - do we know where the portraits are now? “The Rev A. A. S. Mitchell, B.D, minister of the Fraserburgh High Church (formerly Old Parish) has received
intimation of the death of Mrs Cuthbert, British Honduras, the old lady who gifted to the Kirk Session last
year, two very fine portraits in oils of the late Rev Alexander and Mrs Auchinleck. Mrs Cuthbert having reached a ripe old age before her death, and naturally anxious that the two portraits of
her forebears – family heirlooms which she treasured – would not fall into the possession of anyone who did
not know about their history and ultimately consign them to a public auction saleroom, communicated her
wish to the Rev A. Mitchell offering the portraits to the church. The Kirk Session very readily accepted Mrs
Cuthbert’s offer and in a short time the pictures arrived at the High Manse, Fraserburgh. The late Rev Alexander Auchinleck, was a great great great granduncle to Mrs Cuthbert, and it was a sense of
great joy and comfort to this old lady to know that the portraits would find a place of safe custody in the
church where her forebears so faithfully laboured in the 17th Century. It may be stated that the structure of the
Church on the Square has undergone many changes in his architectural outlook since the days of the late Mr
A. Auchinleck: then, it was the shape of a cross. In connection with the portraits, which now adorn the walls of the Session House in the High Church, and
may be seen by anyone interested on application to the church officer. It will be recalled from local press
reports at the time of the pictures arrival in Fraserburgh last year, that the late Rev Auchinleck was the first
Presbyterian minister to be inducted to the church. Although Presbyterianism was the recognised state religion
in Scotland long before Mr Auchinleck’s induction in 1707, Episcopacy being a strong hold in this North East
corner, the church was served by a succession of priests. According to the old records of church history,
several attempts were made by the Presbytery to induct a Presbyterian but without success. Ultimately they
succeeded and Mr Auchinleck was inducted amid stormy scenes. Mr Auchinleck was a loyal son of the
Presbyterian faith, and also a man of strong character – obviously such – judging from a close up study of his
portrait in the High Church. Being a gifted preacher and noted for his saintly life in the community, he was
able to live down the unhappy memories of his early ministry and gather a large congregation of faithful
worshippers in the church including not a few people who had hitherto adhered to Episcopacy. After a
successful ministry which extended over a lengthy period of years Mr Auchinleck died in Fraserburgh leaving
behind him the sweet fragrance of a life well spent in the service of his Master…he was interred in the old
burial grounds (now Kirkton Cemetery) beside his wife and young son. A flat tomb stone marks the grave
which is immediately inside, on the left of the arched gateway into the older part of the cemetery. …”

Church Centre Quiz Night We held a quiz night for Church Centre funds on Friday March 27th. I have to say a
huge thank you to our own Mrs Annette Milne for making up the quiz and being
question master for the evening. Thank you to Mrs Patty Muirhead for all her hard
work keeping everything going smoothly and keeping score along with Mrs Anne
Green and Mrs Shona McLeod. Once again everyone was very generous with
donating and buying raffles. Thanks to Irene and Margaret for selling the raffles.
Most of all thank you to everyone who came along and entered a team. There were
seven teams entered and the centre was £200 better off which was great. Thank you
