Book Club Starting at Your Church Library Pastor Bob in his sermon last Sunday mentioned that when Nelson Mandela was let out of prison he was asked what he was going to do first. And Mandela said he was going to:
Eat a good meal Read a good book
Talk with good friends
I thought, that sounds like a book club to me! Read a good book, get together with some friends, share ideas about the book and enjoy some good food. Ione Adolf, together with your church librarian would love to start a book club. If you are interested, please call Ione at 503-393-5306 or email librarian Betty at [email protected] for more details. You may sign up at the Information Center next Sunday, and we will call you.

younger: WE WANT YOU! Our traditional Baby Parade is scheduled on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13, during the 11:00 am service. A letter will be going out soon to give more details.
• Teacher Appreciation is coming up, Sunday, May
20. I need some parent volunteers to help our children work on an appreciation project in April without the teachers present. The idea is to give our regular teachers a Sunday off in order to work on this surprise project that is presented in May. Please call me if you are interested in helping with this very important project.
• The board approved our Safe Policy; now I
need parents to step up so we can honor that policy. Volunteers will need to fill out a back-ground check form so we can get those in the system. Even if you filled out a form in the past, this is a new system and we appreciate you filling out a new form.
• Pastor's Class: The Pastors and I discussed
restructuring our Pastor's Class. We feel it would be more meaningful and memorable if we spread the classes out over a longer period of time. Starting this fall, we will begin a monthly Pastor's Class that will go until Easter. If you were baptized, or interested in baptism, or would like to learn more about Jesus and a personal relationship with Him, please let us know. There is an informational letter coming out this summer to explain the class.
• This Sunday, March 25, the 1st-5th grade classes
are sitting in the 9:30 am service. The topic of this Sunday is the Last Supper. After experienc-ing the 9:30 am service, we will go down to Children's Church and participate in our own Last Supper.
Flurries from Chris This past Thursday at the Young Adult Fellowship, the topic was taking the Bible seriously. As we made our way through the video a common discussion topic kept arising. How and what are we teaching the young people in the church about the Bible? This conversation carried over into this past Sunday’s youth group as we talked about the importance of the Bible and what the Bible is for us.
In youth group I talked with the youth about how we look at the Bible. A piece of my description about how I understand the Bible is that it is a lens into how the authors of the books of the Bible understand their relationship with God. Through the various books we receive a complex vision of God that is centered around relationship and steadfast love.
As the various discussions continued one of our youth brought up the idea that our understandings of right and wrong do not come from the Bible, but rather from our faith and understanding of who God is. This comment points to a larger understanding of the Bible that is often in opposition to a commonly upheld practice of quoting and citing scripture with-out regard to context which it was written and its location in the Bible, to create a black and white understanding of what is right and wrong. This youth was pointing at how we should use scripture in conjunction with our experiences of God in order to determine what is right and wrong. He was point-ing to how we talk about how we often say that something is against the Bible and leaving God out of the picture and forgetting the central focus of the scriptures as relationship and steadfast love.
