SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JULY 22, 2018 In today’s first reading, we hear through the prophet Jeremiah that God understands the need of the people for shepherds who will lead them to a place of spiritual depth and peace. In the Letter to the Ephesians, we hear that this desire that the people find peace in right relationship with God is for everyone. Yet Jesus also recognizes the needs of the crowds who follow them to that deserted place. He knows that he is the peace for which they long.

SABBATH REST Sabbath. We hear the word, and many think of the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. Today, we hear Jesus say to the disciples, ‘Come away to a deserted place and rest a while.” This is the true spirit of sabbath—to take time away, to worship God, participate in Eucharist, to be refreshed in body, mind, and spirit. Thought of in this way, sabbath is not an obligation but a privilege, a gift rather than a burden. Making sabbath begins with a commitment to put God first. Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Every Tuesday night at 7:00PM in the Shrine Church, we have Eucharistic Adoration for one hour. Come pray for our Parish, Nation, and World!!

Why do you and I come to Mass? There are as many answers as there are people! 1. As Catholics, we believe that Jesus is on the Altar after the Consecration – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity! Why not spend

time with him? 2. We come to support each other as Brothers and Sisters in the Body of Christ! Why would we not help other members of our

Parish Family? 3. We come to hear HIS WORD in the Liturgy of the Word? There is something special for each one of us there! Why not be

there to hear it? 4. We come to be able to take Jesus, His Word and His Love to our world! Who brings the Jesus we meet in Mass to our

World? If not us, WHO?

Peace, Prayer, & Gratitude, Fr. Jerry

Page Six REST IN THE LORD

For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship.
