Instead of resolutions, consider just making an intentional effort to grow closer to God. We don’t have to wait until January 1 to become new creations. Every moment we choose to recognize the love that is God within us and to live that love we are becoming new. Mark your calendars! What would you do with $1.5 billion? That is a little different than the old
question, “What would you do for a Klondike Bar?” Of course, you can’t
actually win that much money in the one-time cash payout option, but the
Powerball lottery has reached a record high now.
People want to win, and as they say, You can’t win if you don’t enter. What
are the odds of winning you ask? Your chance of winning is one in 292
million. The AOL article I read said at those odds, you are 25 times more
likely to be elected president of the United States. It is like flipping a coin 28
times and getting heads every time. Good luck with that!
Even with those odds, California sales leading up to last week, which usually
average $1 million/day, were $2.8 million/hour. Wow! You can’t win if you
don’t enter.
I know that many people play the lottery with their faith. They are buying in
to a system that better pay off in the end with a gold ticket to heaven. That is
always a risky plan because it takes the importance away from today. How
would Jesus want me to treat my spouse today? How does Jesus want me to
raise my children? How does Jesus intend for me to care for others right
now? There is no easy answer to these questions.
Those questions address the tension we feel day in and day out. We need to
focus on the Kingdom of God right now with eyes to eternity but fully
engaged in the here and now. There is no lucky break, magic bullet, or
collection of ping pong balls that will get us to God’s goals. It begins today in
each chance we have to be like Jesus. If we can do what Jesus asks of us right
now, the payoff is unbelievable.
