Ponderings… Rev. Paula Brooks Associate Minister

This past Sunday at the end of the Children’s moment I dismissed the children to go to Children’s Church. One little boy had walked about 6 feet when he turned and shouted, “I didn’t get to put my money in the basket!” I motioned for him to come back, I picked the offering basket up, knelt down and he tossed his quarter in. With a big smile on his face, he happily turned and made his way to Children’s Church.

This precious God moment made me think of the following scripture.

Mark 10:13-16 One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so He could touch & bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering Him. When Jesus saw what was happening, He was angry with His disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to Me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children. I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.” Then He took the children in His arms and placed His hands on their heads and blessed them.

In this scripture Jesus is reminding us of how we are suppose to be in regards to our faith. We are to become childlike not childish. Children in their humble dependence upon others, their receptivity, their acceptance of themselves and their position in life are just a few examples of how we are to be more like them. A child enjoys much but can explain little. Children live by faith. By faith they accept their lot, trusting others to care for them and see them through.

We enter God’s kingdom by faith, like little children: helpless, unable to save ourselves, totally dependent on the mercy and grace of God. We enjoy God’s kingdom by faith, believing that the Father loves us and will care for our daily needs. What does a child do when he or she has a hurt or a problem? They take it to their father or mother! What an example for us to follow in our relationship with our Heavenly Father! Yes, God wants us to childlike, but not childish.

This coming Sunday, March 18, we will be having a Baby Dedication during our Traditional Worship Service. As this small child is brought forward by his family to be blessed, you as his church family will play a very important role. You will promise to be a family in Christ whose love for this child and his family will grow, to share in this child’s growth toward fullness of life in Christ, to tell him about the good news of Christ, to help him learn Christ’s ways, and to lead him in service to God and neighbor.

As this infant grows, as well as our other children, may they serve as a reminder to us to be childlike in our faith, to love one another unconditionally, and to trust God with our heart, mind and soul.

In loving partnership,

In a little over 3 weeks Easter Eggstravaganza and KidlinK will take place at Hill Park. This year our egg goal is “8,000”! We are on our way in reaching that goal

with 1,088 eggs on hand. This is a very exciting time in the life of our church as we reach out to the children and their families in the community. Join the excitement

and let’s get those eggs rolling in. We do have 1 request. Since the weather is usually warm, chocolate will easily melt so use your creativity and fill those eggs

with goodies that won’t have a tendency to melt. For ideas you can go to www.orientaltrading.com.

Mystery Revealed

We've been gearing up for the 2012 Mystery Trip for months, and this week, the mystery can finally be revealed. By the time you read this, we should be on the tail end of our trip or

possibly even on our way home.

This week, 40 youth and adults will be making a difference in the lives of some of the poorest of the poor while working at Inman Christian Center in San Antonio. We'll be staying and playing in the New Braunfels/San Antonio area, but the trip isn't all fun and games. We will be doing many projects for Inman, the largest of which is renovating a playground for their low-income preschool.

Mystery isn't something we embrace easily. We are the people who want to know everything...to control everything. It's really hard to be people of faith, living without all the answers. You wouldn't believe some of the things our youth have tried to do to get some information out of me...it's been quite hilarious.

Paul addresses this issue at the end of his famous love passage in 1 Corinthians 13:

"Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." (vs. 8-12)

This week your youth and adults have embraced the mystery. They are holding on, trusting that journey will be one worth taking and the fullness to be revealed will be far greater than any destination...

They are putting their faith into action, as John would later build on Paul's words:

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." - 1 John 3:18

Go and do likewise.

Our Deepest Sympathy

We extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the following who have recently lost a loved one:

The Family of Loeta Northcutt. Loeta passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2012 in Paris, TX . Loeta is the mother of Andrea Hardaway and the grandmother of Luke and Katie

Hardaway. Services were held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 in Brownfield, TX

“With the peace and grace of Christ, may the Spirit of God gently enfold all those who sorrow.”

After taking a break for spring break, pastor’s class will resume this Sunday, March 18 at 3:30PM in the Children’s Building. The children and their mentors have been on an incredible journey as they have

shared in prayer, getting to know one another and learning about what it means to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Please keep each one in your prayers as their journey continues.
