T.J. is a life-long disciple, growing up in Wichita Falls, TX. He currently serves in a dual setting with FCC, Jacksboro and First United Methodist, Jacksboro. In just a few years, his youth ministry has grown from zero to an average of 60 youth. He has taken mission trips abroad to Mexico and Brazil and led several community wide youth ministry events. He is already active in the Central Area youth and camping program. Many of our youth know him and have worked with him at camp and on the recent mission trip. He is an adult member of the youth council for the Central Area and will also be an adult at the Regional Youth Leadership event. He is a commissioned/licensed minister in the Christian Church and plans to enter a Seminary distance learning program while on our staff, with the hopeful outcome of full ordination. It will be our joy and privilege to serve as his sponsoring congregation during this ordination education journey! T.J. plans to be here by September 1, though housing in this Midland economy is challenging. Members of the search committee are in full search mode for affordable and appropriate housing. ...And a Call
has been extended! T.J. is a life-long disciple, growing up in Wichita Falls, TX.
T.J. plans to be here by September 1, though housing in this Midland economy is challenging. Members of the search committee are in full search mode for affordable and appropriate housing.

You have probably heard by now that earlier this week Willie Ramos, one of our custodian’s, unexpectedly passed away. I have been searching for ways to cope with this unexpected tragedy. I have found solace in the scripture below.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” -Matthew 11:28-30
His sudden passing has caused me to reflect upon life and how fragile it is.
In my readings I came across the following story about a sheep named Shrek. He became famous several years ago when he was found after hiding out in caves for six years. Of course, during this time his fleece grew without anyone there to shear (shave) it. When he was finally found and shaved, his fleece weighed an amazing sixty pounds. Most sheep have a fleece weighing just under ten pounds, with the exception usually reaching fifteen pounds, maximum. For six years, Shrek carried six times the regular weight of his fleece. Simply because he was away from his shepherd.
This reminds me of John 10 when Jesus compares Himself to a shepherd, and His followers are His sheep. Maybe it’s a stretch, but I think Shrek is much like a person who knows Jesus Christ but has wandered. If we avoid Christ’s constant refining of our character, we’re going to accumulate extra weight in this world—a weight we don’t have to bear.
When Shrek was found, a professional sheep shearer took care of Shrek’s fleece in twenty-eight minutes. Shrek’s sixty pound fleece was finally removed. All it took was coming home to his shepherd.
I believe Christ can lift the burdens we carry, if only we stop hiding. He can shave off our ‘fleece’—that is, our self-imposed burdens brought about by wandering from our Good Shepherd.
Life is too fragile for us to be carrying heavy burdens. I encourage not only you but myself to be more intentional in spending time with our great Shepherd. Let Christ handle those things that tend to weigh you down so that you can enjoy, appreciate the blessings that God has to offer each and every day. May we all strive to make each day count not just for ourselves but for those we meet.
In loving partnership,
Ponderings… Rev. Paula Brooks
