THE CHOCOLATE WAR
Definition- (1)weariness of body or mind from strain(2) a condition of indolent indifference.
Book Sentence-He was unwilling to abandon this lovely lassitude , but he had to, of course.
My Sentence- As I sat on the bed, a sense of lassitude came over me.
LASSITUDE
Definition- (1) characterized by or expressing goodwill or kind feelings (2) desiring to help others (3) intended for benefit rather than profit.
Book Sentence-Archie turned and smiled at him benevolently, like a goddam king passing out favors.
My Sentence- He wished that he could become benevolent, the opposite of his present self.
BENEVOLENT
Definition-lacking vigor or energy
Book Sentence-He moved with a subtle rhythm, languidly, the walk of an athlete although he hated all sports and had nothing but contempt for all athletes.
My Sentence-She walked languidly to her class, for she was ill prepared for her science test.
LANGUIDLY
Definition-done in a concealed or underhand way to escape notice, especially disapproval
Book Sentence-He studied the photograph surreptitiously and then closed the magazine and put it back where it belonged, on the top shelf.
My Sentence- He gave her a hug and surreptitiously slipped the gun from her holster , unloaded it, and replaced it.
SURREPTITIOUSLY
Definition-feeling, expressing, or demonstrating a strong dislike or utter lack of respect for somebody or something
Book Sentence-The guys voice was contemptuous.
My Sentence- He was utterly contemptuous, hating everything he set his eyes on.
CONTEMPTUOUS
Definition-feeling, expressing, or demonstrating a strong dislike or utter lack of respect for somebody or something

INGRATIATING
Definition-impossible to revoke, undo, or change

My Sentence-He stood in front of the building, prepared to make the irrevocable decision.

Definition-Pretend to be affected by (a feeling, state, or injury): ".
Book Sentence-”My help?” Archie asked feigning surprise, trying to keep any trace of mockery from his voice.
My Sentence-She feigned nervousness.
FEIGNING
Definition-daring or willingness to challenge assumptions or conventions or tackle something difficult or dangerous
Book Sentence-Archie was surprised by Leon’s audacity…
My Sentence-He had the audacity to ask for a raise.
AUDACITY
Definition-not expressing anything clearly and thus hard to interpret
Book Sentence- “Ready,” Archie said, keeping his face expressionless, inscrutable as usual.
My Sentence-She was inscrutable, a living puzzle in a black silk skirt.
INSCRUTABLE
Definition-to be puzzled at something
Book Sentence- He looked at the kid Goober who stood there in bewilderment.
My Sentence- Bewildered, I began to climb the large staircase.
BEWILDERMENT
Definition-an enemy Book Sentence- The black box was his nemesis.
My Sentence- He scanned the clues carefully, hoping to finally capture his nemesis.
NEMESIS
Definition-the violation or profanation of anything sacred or held sacred.
Book Sentence- “I know you wouldn't consider something so sacrilegious."
My Sentence-She was still the most sacrilegious of anyone I know.
SACRILEGIOUS
Definition-deep in sad thoughts, especially thoughts of something yearned for or lost, or expressing this sad yearning.
Book Sentence- Emile smiled at Archie, suddenly wistful.
My Sentence- He was quite wistful, for he had just lost his mother.
WISTFUL
Definition-A place or situation of confusion, discomfort, or noisy uproar.
Book Sentence- “My God,” cried Brother Eugene as he entered the classroom and beheld the bedlam.
My Sentence- As the President withdrew the news, the city turned to bedlam.
BEDLAM
Definition-Having long slender limbs.
Book Sentence- …stalling until he could spot the Goober , tall and rangy,…
My Sentence- The rangy figure smiled and disappeared into the woods.
RANGY
Definition-Too much praise, flattery.
Book Sentence- Despite the adulation from the guys at school, he felt as if there was some kind of distance between him and the fellows.
My Sentence- He laughed to himself, thriving off of the adulation from the crowd.
ADULATION
Definition- a building, especially one that is very imposing in size or appearance.
Book Sentence- …the need for funds to keep this magnificent edifice of education operating on all gears.
My Sentence- He walked by, barely noticing the edifice barely 5 feet from him.
EDIFICE
Definition-noisy and disorderly
Book Sentence- He watched Brother Leon storming away, pushing his way through the tumultuous corridor, disappearing in to the swarming stream of boys.
My Sentence-She walked quietly through the tumultuous walkway, ignoring everyone.
TUMULTUOUS
Definition-polishing Book Sentence-…and good old Uncle Louis who was always simonizing his car…
My Sentence- The weather was bad, so she began simonizing her coin collection.
SIMONIZING
Definition-to feel or express sorrow or sympathy for; empathize with; pity
Book Sentence- “I know,” the teacher said sorrowfully, in commiseration.
My Sentence- The weather was gloomy, as if the clouds were full of commiseration.
COMMISERATION
Definition-not easily depressed; cheerful
Book Sentence-Brother Leon was buoyant today and his mood had spread throughout the class.
My Sentence- She was buoyant when she heard the news; her mother would make it.
BUOYANT
Definition-wild uproar or unrestrained disorder; tumult or chaos
Book Sentence-Suddenly, pandemonium reigned.
My Sentence- The news caused widespread pandemonium.
PANDEMONIUM
Definition-foolish show; mockery; a ridiculous sham
Book Sentence-Nobody wants to sell the chocolates in the first place and it’s turned into a kind of farce in some classes.
My Sentence- The watched the farce from behind the thin curtain.
FARCE
Definition-a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place
Book Sentence-He had a feeling that Brother Leon was that kind of character, that he would need a scapegoat and Brian would be closest at hand.
My Sentence- He was a scapegoat in his cousins hands.
SCAPEGOAT
Definition-gymnastic exercises designed to develop physical health and vigor, usually performed with little or no special apparatus
Book Sentence-Even though he place was deserted the aftermath of that final period of calisthenics lingered, the stink of boy sweat; armpits and feet.
My Sentence-Calisthenics was a natural thing in the Robert family.
CALISTHENICS
Definition-the share or proportional part of a total that is required from, or is due or belongs to, a particular district, state, person, group, etc.
Book Sentence- And last Year the quota was half of what had to be sold this year.
My Sentence-Mr. Dorgan, have you reached your quota?
QUOTA
Definition- hissing Book Sentence- “Renault……zero,” Brother Leon said , his voice a sibilant whisper.
My Sentence- Thomas stepped towards the train as it came to a sibilant stop.
SIBILANT
Definition- coolness; indifference.
Book Sentence- Infected by a disease we could call apathy.
My Sentence- He saw the fake cockroach and was filled with apathy; he had seen the overused trick many times before.
APATHY
Definition- a device for producing a strong current of air, consisting of a chamber that can be expanded to draw in air through a valve and contracted to expel it through a tube.
Book Sentence- His chest rose and fell like human bellows.
My Sentence- He watched as the bellows worked slowly.
