Dear Church, I am so overwhelmed by your support for our Confirmation class this past Sunday. Your presence with them was a powerful witness to the words we sang together: “The Church is the People.” Thank you for bringing cards for them, showing up for them, and for visiting with them after the service. Our young people are facing these strange times with such resilience and courage. This week, Emmy will begin hosting youth group gatherings outdoors. I know that the kids (and Emmy!) are so excited to gather again! As we move forward, I want you to know that your trustees continue to meet regularly to assess the safety around resuming our indoor gatherings for worship. Additionally. I am working on finding a venue for one more outdoor worship service this Fall. The unpredictability of this pandemic makes it difficult to plan too far ahead. Thank you for your patience through it all. I have spoken with many of my clergy colleagues in Dubuque, and nearly all of them continue to remain online-only for worship because of the increase of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Dubuque. It won’t be like this forever. When we move forward with indoor gatherings, we will take baby steps. We will take reservations for a limited number of people who can be present to maintain social distancing guidelines, and masks will be required. I will shout it from the mountaintops as soon as we resume worship together inside. Believe me, I am missing you every Sunday. In the meanwhile, please continue to be the Church for one another. Check in with each other, pray for each other, sit outside and visit with each other. By God’s grace and mercy, we will be together again soon. Peace,

Pastor Stephanie

Busy Bees’ Quilts Delivered to Hillcrest

Pat Hefel and Kathy Michel, co-leaders of Busy Bees Fellowship group, took 16 beautiful twin sized bed quilts which had been hand tied, to Hillcrest Family Services in August. Each colorful bed quilt had been sewn by Pat or Kathy. Quilts will be given to residential youth living at Hillcrest Family Services. Busy Bees “in normal times” meet on first Mondays at 1:00 pm from February or March through December in St. Luke’s Fellowship Hall. Created quilts are then delivered to Hillcrest Family Services and/or to Men’s Homeless Shelter - Almost Home Ministries at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at White Street also in Dubuque. Quilts are given to residents of both locations to provide comfort knowing that each had been made by “willing hands and caring hearts.” Read the Chimes to learn when Busy Bees will resume “in-person” quilting. Thank You to Pat and Kathy for their leadership of this quilting ministry. New members may join this fellowship group for devotions, dessert and quilting when the precautionary measures related to the pandemic will allow gatherings at St. Luke’s reconvene.

Annual Offering Envelopes

Each year, for those who re-quest it, St. Luke’s orders per-sonalized offering envelopes for the following year. Enve-

Grant Updates Pack the Pantry Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Management has awarded St. Luke's $6,000. The purpose of this grant funding is to increase refrigeration capacity for 501(c)3 organizations that provide free food to people, especially during the pandemic. By increasing refrigeration capacity, more fresh produce can be stored for distribution. The intentional use of the $6,000 is to replace the upright freezer in the kitchen with a single door reach in refrigerator and to replace the current two door reach in refrigerator with a new model, more energy efficient model. Depending on the models chosen, our refrigeration capacity will increase 25-30 cubic feet.

Wahlert Foundation grant: An application was submitted for funds to replace the nearly 50 year old convection oven. We expect to hear about the results in late September or early October.

Theisen More for your Community grant: An application was submitted seeking grant funds to help pay for the disposable tableware and bags needed for our "grab and go" Food for the Soul meals. The cost of those materials has been an unforeseen expense to our ministry that depends entirely on donations.

Food Ministry Feeding America projects that the incidence of poverty and hunger and food insecurity in Dubuque County will increase from 8.8% in 2018 to 13.9 % in 2020. It is a known fact, that the incidence of poverty and hunger and food insecurity is much higher in the area surrounding St. Luke's. This is a fact identified by the City of Dubuque. St. Luke's is a presence in this heart of the city neighborhood and has food ministries attempting to address this situation. For more information about collaborative efforts, including St. Luke's, follow this Facebook page: www.facebook.com/FeedDBQCo

Food for the Soul: Since mid -April, our Food For the Soul meals have been served in a " grab and go " format. The meals continue to be prepared by teams of volunteers, packed into disposable containers and put into paper shopping bags for distribution at the street level Main St. door. Several of the teams need additional volunteer, so if you are willing to help contact Marcia Young 563-580-9650 [email protected] Food Give Away on the Portico: Each Saturday night, we have tables laden with bread, canned and boxed food and sometimes fresh produce that is free to anyone who needs it. The food is purchased through St. Stephen's Food Bank. Each week a trip is made to the Food Bank to

pick up the food and bring it to St. Luke's. Then it is organized into food groups and put on the tables. Volunteers come on Saturday night about 4:30 to carry the tables out to the portico, help people use our COVID-19 precautionary procedure to gather food into bags and then carry the tables and any remaining food back inside. If you would like to help with any of this process contact Pastor Stephanie at [email protected] Food For Families served by St. Mark's Community Center: This is a new, food ministry outreach that is just getting started. St. Mark's Community Center staff is using St. Luke's as a packing and pick-up site for bags of curriculum and activity materials for the students they serve. Families come to St. Luke's, using the 12 street. side door, for a minimal contact pick up of the materials. The purpose of this new St. Luke's food ministry is to collaborate with St. Mark's to provide a box or bag of food for 10 families each week that are identified by St. Mark's staff as most in need. Currently, it is planned to pack the bags on Wednesday afternoons and for them to be picked up on Friday 11 am- 5:30 pm. If you would like to help with this food outreach ministry, contact Mary Purdy 563-590-313 [email protected] Edible Landscape/ Garden ministry: We hope you have been downtown enough to notice the plants growing in the " green space " in the corner of our parking lot across the street, in the area in front of the street-level door and in the raised bed in the side yard of the church. Signs invite people to take whatever is ripe in the parking lot beds and in the pots in front of the church. Thank you to Chris Kohlmann for designing and donating these signs. The vegetables seem to disappear so someone is harvesting them. This year in the space closest to the alley, we also planted some native plants that attract pollinators like butterflies and bees (see right). The raised bed in the side yard is intended to grow vegetables to use for snacks at our Food for the Soul meal. This garden year is winding down but if planting and/or tending a vegetable garden is your interest and you would like to help, contact Mary Purdy 563-590-5313 [email protected]

St. Luke’s Youth Spotlight

Confirmation 2020 This past week, we confirmed our eight

confirmands! Both Pastor Stephanie and I have

been blessed to work with these awesome students

for the past year. Watching all of them grow and

adapt to new happenings, it has been an amazing

experience. As we talked about in our children’s

message this Sunday, the church is so much more

than just a building, it’s all of the people. Now,

these eight students are officially a part of our

church family and Sunday was a warm welcome

for them! Thank you to all who made Sunday possible!
