Because of the increased availability of DVD rentals on line and through vending machines, their business has declined over the last few years and they are now considering closing within the next year. The Chamber is going to begin a program to help them keep the community aware of what movies are coming and the latest DVD rentals. We plan to include this information in our new “Chamber Chat” publication, our newsletter and TV, and add it to the bottom of some of our e-mail blasts. Our hope is that letting our residents know what is coming may stimulate interest. The Chamber will also be featuring the theatre as part of our Bell Tower Festival celebration in June. We are asking the community to help support the theatre and keep it in our downtown. This is especially important since we are now a Main Street Community and the focus is on the development of our downtown. There are multiple options to help support the theatre: -Movies are always a great option for children’s’ birthday parties. -Instead of always renting a DVD, make it a night out with a movie and popcorn. -The theatre is also available for meetings and programs. Hold a meeting at the theatre and then stay for the movie. -Local groups and churches could make it a priority to support the theatre -Movie tickets could be a nice gift or party favor. We are looking at other options, such as tying the theatre to the farmer’s market, so shoppers can make it a family evening. There may also be options to bring in local live entertainment. To help our community develop and maximize our Main Street opportunity we need a theatre in our downtown. Please consider making a night out at the movies part of your regular social schedule. Also rent DVD’s locally when possible. If anyone has any other ideas to help support the theatre please call the Chamber (515-386-2155) and let us know. We appreciate the help and support.

Greene County is fortunate to be one of

the last remaining small counties with our

own movie theatre. The Sierra Theatre has

served our community for decades offering

current movies and a movie rental service.

Because of the increased availability of DVD rentals on line and

through vending machines, their business

has declined over the last few years and

they are now considering

closing within the next year. The theatre would like to remain in our

community and add a digital sound

system but they need our support to

continue operating. The Chamber is going to begin a program to help them keep

the community aware of what movies are coming and the latest DVD

rentals. We plan to include this information in our new “Chamber Chat”

publication, our newsletter and TV, and add

it to the bottom of some of our e-mail blasts. Our hope is that letting our

residents know what is coming may stimulate interest. The Chamber will also

be featuring the theatre as part of our Bell

Tower Festival celebration in June.

We are asking the community to help support the theatre and keep it in our

downtown. This is especially important

since we are now a Main Street

Community and the focus is on the development of our downtown. There are

multiple options to help support the

theatre: -Movies are always a great option

for children’s’ birthday parties. -Instead of always renting a DVD,

make it a night out with a movie and

popcorn. -The theatre is also available for

meetings and programs. Hold a meeting

at the theatre and then stay for the movie. -Local groups and churches could

make it a priority to support the theatre -Movie tickets could be a nice gift

or party favor.

We are looking at other options, such as

tying the theatre to the farmer’s market, so

shoppers can make it a family evening.

There may also be options to bring in local

live entertainment.

To help our community develop and

maximize our Main Street opportunity we need a theatre in our

downtown. Please consider making a night

out at the movies part of your regular social schedule. Also rent DVD’s

locally when possible.

If anyone has any other ideas to help

support the theatre please call the Chamber (515-386-2155) and let us know.

We appreciate the help and support.

I, Andra Kucerak Guccione, would like to send a Chamber “Bouquet” to the Labor and Delivery night staff at Greene County Medical Center. I arrived the evening of Tuesday, November 29, needing medicalat-tention for the flu, and ended up presenting with pre-term labor. I am extremely grateful to Dr. David Jaskey, Midwife Valerie Martin, nurse Andrea Albee, and nurse Mackenzie Hansch for their professionalism and empathy during such a frightening time. Thank you for keeping me calm and staying positive. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the ambulance staff that transported me to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. The actions taken by nurses Andrea and Mackenzie that led to the discovery of my preterm labor and the subsequent trip to Mercy Hospital by ambulance accompanied by Dr. Jaskey and Andrea at 3:00 a.m., are an outstanding example of the high caliber medical care at Greene County Medical Cen-ter. Their level of commitment to their profession and their empathy for someone they did not know is beyond what words can express. Because of their swift action my preterm labor was halted and I was able to continue on with a healthy pregnancy. Kendall Joan Guccione was born on January 18, 2012.

Greene County Chamber & Development would like to send a Chamber Bouquet to the “Jefferson Matters” Committee for all of their hard work and commitment to promoting Jefferson for a Main Street Community. On, February 7, Governor Terry Branstad announced that Jefferson is one of three Main Street Communities.

Becoming a designated Main Street Iowa community is no easy task. Community representatives must attend rigorous training sessions before even being eligible to apply. They must demonstrate support from local organizations, businesses, and lawmakers; funding and in-kind support must be secured and documented; strategic plans outlining short- and long-term goals must be in place; and city resolutions and historic preservation ordinances must be passed and signed. Most importantly, community officials, business owners, and volunteers must agree to work together with the common goals of preserving Iowa's historic buildings and unique commercial business districts, and improving the local economy by adopting and following the Main Street Four Point Approach® to historic commercial district revitalization. Greene County Chamber & Development would like to thank all members of our community who have given time and financial support to make this a reality. Jefferson can be proud our community spirit and we can now look forward to the benefits that come with being a main Street Community

Greene County Medical Center A “Welcome Home, Baby” reception is planned for Saturday, March 31 for

all 15,500 plus babies born at the Medical Center over the past 75 years.

While it is impossible to even contemplate sending personal invitations,

this will be an “invitation” only event with one’s birth certificate being your

invitation. RSVP’s are being sought. The medical center has set up a special

email: [email protected] for those born at the center to send their

intentions for attending. A “Welcome Home, Baby” hotline has also been set up to take

RSVPs. That number is: 515-386-9891. The committee is also encouraging any special birth

stories to be shared this way.
