HMP EDINBURGH – PURPOSE, CHALLENGE & OPPORTUNITY

▪ To provide secure accommodation for those committed to us by the

courts

▪ To provide a wide range of rehabilitative support and services to those

within our care and their families

▪ To provide a community reintegration model which promotes

desistance and reduces reoffending

▪ To provide continuous support and development to all staff

▪ To improve public confidence in the work that we do

▪ Second largest prison in Scotland, with a maximum capacity to hold

up to 986 prisoners

▪ Community facing prison, serving the courts of Edinburgh,

Dunfermline and Livingston although many prisoners come from other

parts of Scotland

▪ Has its own Visitor Centre which is located within the grounds of the

prison (run by Barnardo’s Scotland)

PLACEMENTS

▪ Available for eligible short term male and female offenders

▪ in place - NHS Lothian, Sue Ryder and Salvation Army

▪ In discussion – Scottish Government and Barnardo’s Scotland

THROUGHCARE SUPPORT

▪ Voluntary service available for eligible offenders, designed to promote

self-efficacy and support offenders on their journey into desistance

▪ Support and advocacy services provided both pre and post liberation

in collaboration with key partners, families and SPS staff

▪ Individualised case management plans
