Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this
is a grace before God. For to this you have been called,
because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example
that you should follow in his footsteps.” 1 Peter 2:20-21
The quote above is from the second reading this weekend. It
struck me this week because it calls us to be more patient,
while we’re all challenged to be more patient with our current
situation in the midst of a pandemic. Six weeks or more we
have been in our new normal routine, a routine that for most of
us would be anything but normal six weeks ago. Peter’s words
can be comforting to many of us. This weekend would have
been the weekend that our eight grade students would have
been confirmed by Bishop Waltersheid. The last two
weekends would have been the same for our First Holy
Communion second graders and their families. Several people
were preparing to be baptized or received into our Catholic
faith on Holy Saturday, but were not. The villain who stopped
these people from seeking these goods is named
Covid-19. The Scriptural words above are comforting,
because whenever we suffer for doing what is good, we can
recognize that we are called to that witness of Christian
life. Just as a perfectly innocent Jesus suffered for all the good
he did, so to we can share in that life. Maybe the next time we
get hurt by someone we have helped in life, we can remember
these words too. And, instead of getting upset and frustrated,
recognize that it is for this that we are called Christian and
learn a greater sense of patience. Let’s pray for our second
and eighth graders, and our RCIA class this year. They are
being prepared to be even more Christian than most of us
who didn’t have to suffer so much to receive those grace-filled
sacraments.

Updates on our parish life:
1. PARKING LOT CONFESSIONS, FUNERALS AND
WEDDINGS: Late last week, Bishop Zubik gave priests the option
to begin or resume parking lot confessions. We did that last week at
St. John the Baptist Church. For those who would like to receive
sacramental confession, go to the lower level parking lot off of Miller
Lane by the creek. An attendant there will give you instructions on
driving up past the school to the front circle drop off area in front of
St. John Church. I will be hearing confessions again at 9 AM and
Father DeWitt will replace me at 10 AM to hear confessions. You
may also come to get your own bottle of water blessed as holy
water, either with confession or without confession. Please follow
social distancing. We are also able to have funerals and weddings
for 10 persons or less, including priest and servers. Also, we are still
celebrating our final “former” parish feast days before our grouping
merger in July. The first one is next weekend/Mother’s Day—
FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER. While we had hoped for a
community gathering, now it will be more virtual. However, Father
Phil Przybyla will be celebrating the 5:30 PM Mass on May 9 for the
St. Joseph Parish community. Upcoming Parish Feasts are:
St. Januarius – May 16, Our Lady of Joy – May 23/24, St. John the
Baptist – June 20/21, St. Irenaeus – June 27/28.
2. MOTHER’S DAY CANDLES: Next weekend is Mother’s Day
and we are offering to light a candle in church for you or your
mother. You will need to complete the online form on our website
(preferred) or get the paper form in this bulletin returned to us by
Tuesday, May 5. The seminarian from our grouping, Brian Myler,
will be working with us starting this week and throughout the
summer. He will take care of getting the candles lit in all the
churches for our mothers to be honored and remembered. We will
print a list of those mother’s in the bulletin next week also.
3. MASS by LAND PHONE: Last week, I reported that we have
our livestream 9 AM Mass accessible to those who only have
regular landline phones at home. If you don’t have a cell phone, or if
you don’t quite know how to use your smart phone, you can simply
call this number, enter the meeting information from any touchtone
phone and you will be able to hear the Sunday or weekday Masses,
live. This information was provided in the letter mailed to all
parishioners, but it is repeated here especially for those who might
not be registered, but come to our churches: Starting Sunday,
April 19, we audio stream our Mass so that parishioners can call in
to hear the 9 AM Mass daily. If you would like to join from your land
line phone, first, call this phone number 1 (301) 715-8592. You will
be asked for a meeting ID. Enter: 421 713 3195 #. You will be
asked for a participant ID followed by # or just #. Enter #. Finally,
you will be asked for a meeting password. Enter: 123456 #.
4. May Crowning Scheduled! We are inviting all families and
parishioners to celebrate Mary this weekend, May 2 & 3, by either
creating your own crown of flowers (real or crafted) or by picking
one or a few of the flowers in your area and placing them at
statues of the Blessed Mother at St. Irenaeus or Our Lady of Joy
Churches (Please go to Mary next to STI Church, not STI
preschool). Do this while maintaining social distance, take a picture,
post, and hashtag #OPVMayCrown if you use social media. On
Sunday, May 3 at 3 PM we'll take a photo of the collection of
crowns and flowers brought on this day.
5. National Day of Prayer is this Thursday. Take an extra
moment to offer a prayer of your own, or connect with our weekday
Mass at 9 AM. Let’s continue to pray for an end to this Corona
pandemic for our nation and world.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
READING I ACTS: 2:14A, 36-41
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and
proclaimed: “Let the whole house of Israel know for certain
that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you
crucified.”
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they
asked Peter and the other apostles, “What are we to do, my
brothers?” Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, every
one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the
promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far
off, whomever the Lord our God will call.” He testified with many
other arguments, and was exhorting them, “Save yourselves
from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message
were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added
that day.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM 23: 1-3A, 3B4, 5, 6
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
He guides me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side.
With your rod and your staff
that give me courage.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
R. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.
R. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.
READING 2 1 PT 2-20B-25
Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is
good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been
called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an
example that you should follow in his footsteps.
He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.
When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered,
he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one
who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the
cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray
like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and
guardian of your souls.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 10:14
I am the good shepherd says the Lord; I know my sheep, and
mine know me..
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL JN 10:1-10
Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a
sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief
and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shep-
herd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the
sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by
name and leads them out When he has driven out all his own,
he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they
recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will
run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of
strangers.” Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the
Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate
for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers,
but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever
enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and
find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and
destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more
abundantly.”
Volver la mirada a Cristo
La verdad misma siempre va a estar más allá de nuestro
alcance.

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION AND CARE
God our Father, we come to you in our need to ask
Your protection against the coronavirus that has
claimed lives and has affected many.
Guide the hands and minds of medical experts that they
may minister to the sick with competence and compassion, and
of those governments and private agencies
that must find a cure and solution to this pandemic.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most
Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot
at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen

NEW OPV MAINTENANCE
COORDINATOR
Congratulations to Bill Pahlman who
has been hired to serve as our first
OPV Maintenance Coordinator.
Bill has been at St. John’s for almost
two years. He previously worked in the
machine shop/manufacturing field. In addition to having an
extensive background in machining, Bill attended many
classes on the repair of major equipment to keep the
business running. He started as a machinist, but over the
years, he worked his way up to supervisor and eventually
manager of a machine shop.
Bill brings this experience to the OPV parishes/schools. His
responsibilities include repairing, replacing, and making
improvements in all 14 facilities at OPV. Bill looks at each
difficult task as a challenge and strives for positive results
each time.
Bill has been married to his wife, Peg, for 42 years. She is a
teacher at St. John the Baptist School. They have two
sons, Jeremy and Chris, and 5 grandchildren.

OLOJ Parish Mission Statement
Our Lady of Joy Parish is a Catholic community of faith dedicated to Mary, the cause of our
joy. We are centered in Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the
Eucharist. We are a welcoming family, striving to see Christ in all and responding to the needs
of the members of our parish and community. Called to act in faith, hope and love we seek to
become a visible presence of Christ in the world. Our Lady of Joy, pray for us!
SJV Parish Mission Statement
St. Joseph Parish is a faith community, rich in history and strong in its Catholic tradition since
1866. Through the grace of the Eucharist and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we com-
mit ourselves to building up the Body of Christ through a strong spiritual life, education in the
faith and service to our parish and community.
St. Joseph, pray for us!
SJAN Parish Mission Statement
St. Januarius is a Roman Catholic community of faith focused on the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ. We are grateful to those who have built up St.
Januarius to be a welcoming, active, and spiritual parish. With the Eucharist and
through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to use the gifts and talents
given to us by the Father to support the lives of parishioners at all age levels and
stages of life. We also pledge to live our lives so that through our words and
actions all may feel the presence of Jesus Christ in the world today.
St. Januarius, pray for us!
SJB Parish Mission Statement
Saint John the Baptist Parish is located in Plum Borough,
Pennsylvania and is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese
of Pittsburgh. As a faith community, we strive to imitate
our patron Saint John the Baptist who led others to Christ.
We are committed to keeping our faith alive and growing
through prayer, sacraments, faith formation and service.
Through evangelization and stewardship we encourage
full and active participation of all members. We hope to
reflect the life and love of Christ by strengthening the faith
of our parishioners while reaching out to all God’s people.
Saint John the Baptist, pray for us!
STI Parish Mission Statement
The Faith Community of St. Irenaeus strives for knowledge, service, and faith
through our patron’s guidance and the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. With love,
worship, and solidarity, we are building God’s Kingdom in our families and
communities. Nourished by Word and Sacrament, we give ourselves to Christ
and His Church for the greater glory of God our Father.
“The proper glory of God is man fully alive.”
