He was also a great and committed Christian. In the 1924 Olympics in Paris these two commitments came into conflict. The heats for the 100 metre race were scheduled on a Sunday. Eric refused to run. He had made a promise to honour Sunday as the Lord’s Day – and he would honour his promise. Britain’s bright hope for a medal was called a traitor by those who thought he had got his priorities wrong. However, Eric scraped through into the final of his weaker event, the 400 metres. He ran. He won. He set a new world record. After his shock gold he said humbly, “The first half I ran as fast as I could. The second half I ran faster with God’s help.” It is reliance on God that is held up and blessed in the Beatitudes today. When we know our need of God, when we honour our baptismal promise to follow his Way, he will “champion” us. That may put us at odds with the values of the world but, with God’s help, we can all run faster. Best Wishes to all students and staff who are starting back at school this week, may your year be prosperous and productive. February 14th beginning 5:15 pm at the
shop in Avenue Rd, this will be followed
by the monthly meeting. All welcome
The Gift Of Giving: Thank you parishioners for your generosity when giving foodstuffs and presents for our special Christmas Food Parcels. We delivered 89 parcels and over 400 presents; making it possible for these less fortunate families in Flaxmere, Hastings, Havelock North and Central Hawkes Bay to have a Christmas. The joy seen on children’s faces, and on those of many mothers was a delight to see. Many mothers saying “the Christmas food and the children’s presents were likely to be the only food and presents their children would see this Christmas”. Again many thanks parishioners. We and the recipients are most grateful. St Vincent de Paul, Conferences St Peter Chanel, Sacred Heart, Our lady of Lourdes and Central Hawkes Bay.
David and Rangi Donnelly who celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary yesterday. May God Bless you both
with many more happy years together.
Congratulations to Claire and Matt Rogers on the
birth of their new son Oscar who was born on New
Years day. A little brother for Aaron and Evie.
Reminder for all Ministries If you cannot do your ministry on the day you are rostered. Please find a replacement. When you are not present and have not arranged a replacement it makes it difficult for the coordinators to do their ministry when having to find replacements on the day. We thank everyone for their co-operation in this matter.
YOUTH CORNER
Kia Ora everyone.
LIFE TEEN CAMP 21 youth and 4 chaperones attended the camp last week.
The theme for this year was ‘Unfinished’. We are not
finished with our journey with God, we may think we
have done so much for the Church, families, work, etc.
but we are not finished yet. This theme and the in-depth
explanation of it, comparing to different Scripture verses,
made us strong to keep going with whatever we are doing
in this life. The growth of our young people's Faith is
really encouraging and promising that their participation
in this great life changing camp should be a continuous
event to take part in. New campers were really touched
by the presence of the Holy Spirit, those who had
attended before learnt new experiences and were able to
help new people in some of the activities. The travel
went well and they all enjoyed those flash vans! Thanks
to Mr Preston Epplett for organizing them. I would like to
take this opportunity to acknowledged and thank those
who have supported our Youth Ministry with this event
especially the Parish staff, committees, Charities - SVdP,
Catholic Charities, & sponsor - Baywide Electrical, the
youth group & families and to the wonderful parishioners,
for your generous giving, that enabled our young people
to attend this best ever camp! Thank you so much for all
your support in different ways and may God continue to
bless you all with your families.
At the coming youth masses, the youth will be sharing
their experiences (Glory Stories) with parishioners.

Youth Group Only a week to go before we start
