Second Sunday of Advent
Segundo Domingo de Adviento
2 December, 2015
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Stand on the heights, Jerusalem; see your children rejoicing that they are remembered by God. A merciful and just God leads Israel in joy (Baruch 5:1-9). Psalm — The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading — May your love increase in knowledge to discern what is valuable that you may be blameless for the day of Christ (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel — John proclaims a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:1-6). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
PUT ON JOY Today, Baruch speaks of the splendor that lies ahead for the city of Jerusalem and for all of us, regardless of where home is for us. Throw off strife, he tells us, and put on joy. Like a favorite old sweatshirt, joy fits, and how warm it keeps us, even when the winds blow cold. Paul knows of this joy as he pens his letter to the Philippians, praying that they may grow in their ability to discern what is righteous and good. And Luke speaks to us of John, who was foretold by Isaiah and who sings a similar song—“Prepare the way of the Lord,” for salvation is at hand. A man ahead of his time, Baruch spent his days joyfully awaiting a distant glory. On this Second Sunday of Advent, Paul and John know that this glory is upon us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Copyright © J. S. Praying Hands: How can you be a Minister to the Sick without ever leaving your own home? It’s easy!
Every week our bulletin has a list of people who have requested our prayers for healing, for hope, for courage and for strength. They need our prayers and they believe that our prayers are powerful. So, may I suggest that every day we pray for one person from that list. We can name that person as we bring our prayers to the heart of God and ask our loving God to lay His healing hands on them.
In that way, these people will no longer be names on a list, they will be people who are special to us and we can be prayer warriors in our own homes. Try it! Sr. Sheila

Regarding Suicide and Mass One of our parishioners wrote that they were a little confused about the Church’s stance regarding suicide. Apparently a friend who took their own life was afforded a Mass of Resurrection (funeral Mass) and this was questioned by our parishioner. I wrote: I’m assuming you’re asking “Does the Church recognize suicide as a sin”, and the simple answer is “yes”. As a child I was taught it was a mortal sin. But we have to recognize that culpability and desire to commit the sin affects the gravity of the offence. The Church in the pre-Vatican II past was quick to judge this sin as grave enough to forbid a Mass and even burial in a Catholic cemetery. In the years following, the Church has begun to look at state of mind of the person committing the sin. Much the same way the State looks insanity as a defense in murder cases. We as Church cannot determine the sanity of the person who takes one’s life, so we cannot judge the sin. Therefore we do not exclude suicides from the Mass of Resurrection or Catholic Burial. Severe depression tends to cloud one’s ability to process information in a rational sense. Is suicide a sin? Yes. Is it a mortal sin? It depends.
On Thursday, December 3rd The Boy Scouts of America, California Inland Empire Council, Old Baldy recognized Father Jerry as the 2015 North Star Award Recipient. Congratula ons Fr. Jerry!
